Q&A Thursday - Doug Cunnington (Founder of Niche Site Project) #Best Education Page #Online Earning

Q&A Thursday - Doug Cunnington (Founder of Niche Site Project)

right what's up YouTube it's Q&A
Thursday Doug Pennington here from niche
site project and I have facebook over
here so people are probably going to be
joining up shortly I hope hopefully in a
minute we'll have YouTube alive and
active over there and of course I need
to make sure this thing is working so I
need to pull up the feed so I can see
the chat and it will have YouTube and I
think we're rolling which is super cool
it's always good when this thing works
and I see Tana
awesome by the way do I pronounce your
name correctly
Tohono tejana Tana is that right
I'm not sure I've only see their senior
written and tejana asks am i streaming a
bit earlier now yes I am doing 30
minutes earlier as a test it's more
convenient for me generally so I found
that sometimes these sessions were going
like a little bit longer and I wanted to
go to the gym and where he's lunch
so yeah I'm moving to 30 minutes earlier
and I may even experiment to go to a
different time so it's interesting
because a lot of the people in like
European closer to GMT time zones tend
to be able to attend these and then a
lot of people in the u.s. can't unless
they are working from home or have some
like really flexible schedule so if I
shifted it to the evening in the US well
that's kind of inconvenient for me but
more people in the US can attend so
tejana tejana okay got it
that makes sense and David from Tel Aviv
very cool hey David do you know people
that work at Amdocs
I used to work at AM docks for a few
years and I see
we have three people on Facebook today
Facebook folks well hopefully you can
hear me today's Q&A Thursday I'm gonna
try and make that thing for Thursday's
also maybe I can get a better sign he's
gonna just write in these post-it notes
so okay cool so overall I have a few
things going on today so interesting
right I've been last week some people
may remember last week I was awaking up
at like 4:30 every day which was really
cool I got a lot of work done I was kind
of waking up around 5:00 anyway cuz it
gets bright pretty early around here in
the summer long days super long days so
it was getting up kind of early and I
thought hey why don't I just wake up a
little bit earlier I have a lot of work
to do a lot of writing I do better
writing in the morning and I'm like less
distracted in the morning and it was
talking I was pretty tired last week to
be honest with you I was very tired last
week and I may have been drinking too
much like coffee through the day and
then it certainly impacted my sleep
somehow but I was just like really tired
so super weird thing like I think Monday
I slept in until like 5:45 and then it
just woke up but like the last three
days like Tuesday through Thursday I
woke up at like 4:30 I just woke up I
feel good I'm not tired and I basically
just wake up and start working so I've
been up for a long time like six hours
it's like 10:00 10:30 8 in the morning
here but yeah I got a lot done so far
and if you've Leo's on what's up leo
we looks like we have a smaller crew at
least so far today although I guess we
just got started so David in Tel Aviv
says yeah you think you do know people
and Docs I never did go to that I
actually I don't know how to pronounce
that City
but I knew people that work there and I
I like I guess worked on teams with
people in that office in other offices
in Israel so yeah and I knew like a lot
of people that I worked with were for me
that area just in general like around
this city that is so anyway he has a
good company overall so today's Q&A
I think people did mention they had
questions yesterday and in fact
yesterday there were so many questions I
thought it was gonna be like a 20 30
minute session it was like an hour so I
figured hey today we'll just do that
kind of stuff okay so here we go JP
first question here come in love so JP
asks and one of my articles I mentioned
I use it as it leaves a link where you
come in which is sometimes do follow
while comment love appears to be dead
last updated over a year ago any
alternatives to this approach
nothing I'm aware of no as far as
getting that like do follow link however
the last like big guest posting campaign
that I did I didn't look for comment
love blogs I just looked for blogs that
were active right so just look for blogs
that were active because my real goal
was to get a guest post it wasn't to get
a do follow-up link in the comment it
was connected with the blogger and then
like build a relationship with them over
a series of points where you connect
with basically you do the blog comments
and then you do some email
correspondence and you make friends with
them overall and the other part is happy
to be tried at JP have you done a blog
commenting campaign and tried it out and
I see we have a
people on Facebook and Facebook people I
know a lot of folks tend to bounce in
and out but this is Q&A Thursday if you
could read those chicken scratches so
you could ask questions if you want and
you can leave comments you can mention
where you're from like it I think if you
double tap on the screen if likes it I'm
not a hundred percent sure okay
David asked if I put any thought into
having a patreon account for my YouTube
videos that's a question from David
now I haven't specifically um that's
something I'm a little torn right so and
maybe I can get your feedback on this so
the thing is basically I sell the course
right
I saw the course I don't even do much
affiliate like marketing on each site
project where I you know review products
and encourage people to buy I'm not sort
of like what Pat Flynn does right like
the majority at least up until very
recently Pat Flynn from smart passive
income his revenue is primarily from
like affiliate purchases his you know
fans make which is great I mean he's
making something like 30 to 50 K per
month just from Bluehost right so that's
only from Bluehost and there's a bunch
of other products that people buy I mean
I buy a few things through his links
because he you know helped out provided
so much information and basically where
I'm at like I sort of struggled David
because you know primarily I want to you
know support myself and a lot of the
work I do is for a lot of it especially
then more advanced and interesting
things that I'm sort of struggling with
is people that already have sites they
don't need my course right at best they
may want an hour or two of coaching from
me which is cool like I enjoy doing that
especially when it's like
a complex problem I can come in from the
outside and help people but as far as
like a patreon account which is if
people aren't familiar essentially it is
a way for content producers to get paid
right they are like I'm gonna screw up
the nouns and verbs and stuff like that
but I think we have an international
audience so if I speak English poorly it
won't offend anyone probably just
embarrassing for me but these like I
don't even know how to say it now that
I'm thinking about it but basically
people can donate money to me right if
they like the content that I'm putting
out they appreciate what I'm doing they
want to support me in some way they can
be a patreon and like give me some give
me some money
basically so in is interesting David
that you mentioned that because I know
like I'm pretty sure you have a site
that you're working on you're on these
you're on these sessions all the time
you like help me out when I send out
poorly formatted emails or have you you
helped me point out the mistakes that I
overlooked but I don't think I
necessarily have like a product that you
can buy specifically so maybe that's why
you're asking I hope so but and then
that makes me I mean I'm in a point
where I'm looking at other courses where
I could expand a little bit more I
always throw out productivity because
everyone wants to be more productive but
I'm not a hundred percent sure like
where it fits in really project
management should be the course but very
few people are gonna buy a project
management course so I could like wrap
up I can reframe project management as
productivity right because not that many
people are gonna think I just want to be
more organized and have systems and blah
blah blah some people do but most people
will get like glassy-eyed and not pay
attention so anyway this is a good
question David and as he can't over from
Bristol thank you CAD good to see you on
if you have any questions just let me
know and I appreciate you being active
in the Facebook group and
like that that's very cool okay um and
going back to JP so the original
question by JP was around comment love
and I asked her JP asked comment love
hasn't been updated in a year it doesn't
look like it's a route to go through
anymore are there any alternatives
so yes don't use comment love just go
comments out there but my follow-up to
JP was if he tried and the answer is no
yet you just have your site under 10
articles so you're waiting so basically
the answer is and I think you came
around to it JP if you give it a try
you'll find there's a lot of blocks more
blogs than you could ever comment on
with comment on them so it definitely
still works however the fact that it is
not still an active readily updated or I
guess up-to-date plugin means where that
may be going away people do like to have
plugins that are modern and updated and
at work but the the two things that I'll
say is give it a try before you dis
candidate which I see that you're going
to and then the other thing is you have
once you get 10 articles going I mean
actually go ahead and start doing these
blog comments I mean no one's not gonna
allow your comment just because you
don't have enough critical on your site
every site started out with zero post so
there's no shame and going out there and
starting to become active in the
community I mean people want you to
comment on their blogs it's like a sort
of a compliment to them that you
actually cared enough to read and
comment on the blog so alright mark
what's up good to have you on and let's
see okay next question
tejana asks how it does it take you guys
to write an article about 5,000 words
yeah feel free and everyone to answer
that for me I am
excuse me barely slow in writing and my
voice is going to die here hold on a
second
okay I think that's what happens if you
drink coffee for like six hours all
right so the other day I wrote about 500
words in like 20 minutes so if you
expand that out I guess that means I
could write a lot faster than it think I
can but I knew exactly what I was gonna
write about so I just like it was almost
like stream-of-consciousness and then I
edited multiple times after that
that was for a blog post it was project
go white hat part 9 if you're following
along in the series so at the end of the
day that post ended up being much longer
because I reacted and added more and
more so for me it takes me a super long
time to write especially if it's high
quality so for 5000 words honestly that
would probably take me about a week of
like 4 to 6 hours a day
give or take and that's like I'm that
that's like with me going back and
editing it probably doing some other
work to break up the activity so if I
like put it down into like and I'm not a
like I'm not writing for like a
Productivity like it means a lot if I
can go back and edit it for a niche that
project and make sure it's like really
good content so what's up Paul over
there so really other people it may be
more accurate for other people to answer
I'm not sure Deana next mark says could
a site rank that's very narrow product
focused when there's not much content
available maybe that's a little bit
tough to answer but I would say you know
that question is tough is it possible
sure it's possible is it likely I'm not
sure and then should you try it there's
only one way to find out if it's gonna
work so and then T on dimensions on
patreon you can publish more premium
content that would be more affordable
for some and it's only available for the
donors okay very interesting that may be
something to test I actually I actually
have some ideas especially for for
example right I'm like I mentioned it
often so hopefully everyone knows I'm
relaunching the course in a few weeks
and basically I'm going from like a 16
day launch period to like seven days and
I was following a particular model that
I haven't mentioned specifically I mean
I have a Trello board and a list of like
activities and a template that I was
working off of and it took a long time
to like reverse engineer and work
through it plus write all the content so
I'm cutting it down and like it's
interesting stuff if you're interested
in like launching products analyzing
other people's launches and then
implementing it yourself
that sort of stuff so I'm going from a
nine-day launch window to five-day and
there's reasons why I'm doing it and
then I'm adapting it down
additionally um I've asked I did a pilot
would like to affiliates you know we're
sorry three affiliates in the last
launch and I'm bringing on like two
other people that I trust people that
I've known for years so this is all like
behind the scenes and I've mentioned it
for like to other people a couple of
times I'm pretty sure people are
interested in it
but it's also very light inside my
business right so um it's not that
someone can steal it I've just
remanufactured and reverse engineered
what other people have done so it's not
like I have proprietary information in
the like generic lunch but specifically
what I'm doing is very like I guess
proprietary to my business
how valuable it is to someone else I
don't know but anyway the point is that
could be something where I just like do
a test maybe it's much cheaper because
the thing is even if I gave everyone
like what I'm doing in the formula of
exactly what I'm doing
there's very few people that would be
able to like reverse-engineer and then
my copy the course right because you
know I have credibility built across
like multiple years of guest posting and
being on other people's platforms so
like that is sort of impossible for
someone to recreate in less than like 12
months or something if someone was
really like knew what they were doing
I'm sure they could recreate it but to
actually get stuff published out there
is not an easy thing to do okay so next
do you see a couple questions on
Facebook how many max affiliate links
could be inserted in a text without
Google SEO penalizing it Paul that's a
good question I don't know the answer
because I've never put too many links in
but I would say just put like maybe one
affiliate link per about 250 words or so
so if you have a you know thousand word
article that's for affiliate links can
you put more yeah you could put more but
I would I would I guess question your
calls to action and how powerful they
are because if you have a good call to
action you have the right people on your
site then you don't need to like put
thirty in there right I mean there's no
real value in that so okay and then cat
mentions as far as content and writing
cat mentions on the Facebook side that
she wrote a buying guide that was 8,000
words and it took two to three weeks
with the research so if
you think about that tejana it means
that 5000 words would take like a week
and a half something like that maybe a
little longer okay and I see my man Mike
is over on the Facebook side that's cool
I think it's very late at night over
there Mike and I see you we have a
couple more questions okay david says
you're personally on the fence about
patreon you just wanted to get my
thoughts on it now that I'm youtubing
daily cool and then JP also mentions
that whatever I said about like blog
commenting makes sense to push on
there's so much to do yeah there's a ton
to do but really there's a lot of like
different things that you can do but
really you only need to do about like
three or four things and do it like over
and over and over again and then Tana
mentions or ask what I say that I'm a
perfectionist no not anymore
I think I used to be but now I'm very
much a this is a good enough good enough
thing so I mean look at this this is
terrible so the the other thing to
mention is I just read this book called
it's been out for a while it's The
Happiness Project has anyone read The
Happiness Project out there is by
Gretchen Rubin I believe and there was a
section in there about it wasn't
perfectionism but it was close to it so
there's what they call it maximizers my
wife is a Maximizer
so whenever actually this just happened
right this is a perfect example so we
were talking about booking our
anniversary trip later on this year
so she recently got a new job
she doesn't have like a huge amount of
vacation time shows to accumulate it and
basically you know we're trying to
figure out how many days and what we're
gonna do and we were really struggling
so she's a Maximizer which I'll defined
in a second and I'm a satisficer right
so I basically look for like a minimum
threshold of what I want and then I'll
find something that meets it and then
I'll make a decision then I move forward
and I don't think about it again my wife
on the other hand is a Maximizer so she
wants to maximize value she wants to
maximize the enjoyment she wants to
maximize you know the like amount of
time and stuff like that so we were
looking at trips to maybe go to San
Francisco and go see a comedy show with
like this guy this comedian called John
Mulaney who has a few Netflix specials
you should check them out if you haven't
watched them and she was looking at a
lot of different possibilities on what
we could do different cities that we can
go to and in fact before we talked about
going to San Francisco she threw out you
know four other cities that were
possible options too so Seattle Portland
I think Vancouver and a few others and
after we had like five options I had
already thought you know what San
Francisco is awesome I haven't been in
eight years or something like that and
it would be great to check it out it'd
be you know really fun no need to look
at anymore and it looks like there's
really affordable flights
she continued looking and looking
because she wasn't sure if you know it
was the best
you know flight maybe we can get a
little bit better of a flight option or
so on so that's all to say I used to be
a perfectionist and I probably used to
be a Maximizer and there are certain
things where I like do a ton of research
like I got a new camera recently and it
did a ton of research on like cameras in
which camera to get and then once I
found something that met the minimum
threshold
I like decided between
to even have picked it and bought it and
I won't look again for like you know
five or six years until it breaks or you
know some other great technological
thing happens so anyway there was a long
answer it used to be a perfectionist but
now I'm not and I think the other part
is that used to do I mean I have an
engineering degree so I really I mean
all that detail-oriented stuff is sort
of like inherent and all the details
matter like precision matters and
accuracy they all matter right and for
some of the work that I'm doing now with
internet marketing as long as you're
like close enough like with my niche
sites as long as you're close enough
like it's usually good enough so that's
kind of how I'm operating right now okay
next I see that Leo mentioned about
writing the question was how long it
takes to write five thousand words leo
is also slow just like me he plans one
hour per thousand words but that
includes inserting images finding
relevant links and formatting that's
really good leo that's actually kind of
fast and yeah the poster does stand out
a little bit let's see and then John
asked hey Doug would you be open to
answering some questions outside of the
webinar I really I'm open to it
but there has to be really good
questions and really concise I think
anyone that's emailed me knows I
basically answer every single email the
quality of your question dictates the
quality of your answer additionally if
you're a student of mine you'll get a
really good answer back even if your
question isn't as good as it could have
been so I would never write that but
clear questions get clear answers and
specific questions or what we're looking
for so John I'm definitely open
brevity is appreciated so let's see okay
and then tejana mentions that your
Maximizer and it could be a drawback if
there's not enough time which is totally
true and yeah with experience you could
tone it down and the thing is like there
are certain things or certain decisions
in which you know it really pays off to
spend the extra time in if you buy a car
you buy a house if you're buying
something that's gonna last multiple
years then it's really important for me
like on the you know anniversary trip
that I was describing when I got down to
it it was like I wanted to go to
somewhere that was not entailed right so
somewhere out of town and it didn't
matter you know if we drove there or if
we you know flew I didn't even mind if
we had your multiple connections or
anything like that for a flight I'm
pretty simple as far as accommodations I
don't need anything super fancy just a
place to hang out I don't even care
about Wi-Fi I'm not gonna be working
while we all were out and you know just
a clean hotel would work for me so I
wasn't really like shooting for the
stars or anything I just need like a
place to go really simple so luckily you
know my wife is also simple she doesn't
mean anything fancy but she's definitely
like into the process of like maximizing
experiences to a point where it's like
you know she's spending hours and hours
and hours and you know is not gonna make
a big change I have another story about
that too if we have time I'll tell it
okay I see a question from Victor Thanks
over there and oh oh and I see Paul
mentioned her was asking questions so
the book is called I think the Happiness
Project and it's Gretchen Rubin I think
that's her name the
asks what's your favorite method for
gaining backlinks except guest posting
for a new website so blog commenting I
mean I wish I can give more exciting
answers but you know if you do blog
commenting and you do guest posting
it'll work if your content is good and
your networking like how I outline
multiple touchpoints and you're actually
like connecting with people you should
be able to get a guest post and if your
site is you know high quality of good
content that's actually helping people
you should be able to get those guest
posts so not an exciting answer but I
hope that's helpful
okay next Brian asks Brian from Fort
Wayne asked for link building what do
you include in my comments do you use
your personal Gravatar yeah so basically
you just need to comment on the post
right so an intelligent comment on the
post will get you you know it'll get
approved right and then do I use my
personal Gravatar yeah yeah so you know
you can have a persona right and maybe
that's what you're asking
maybe I'm reading it wrong but basically
yeah so if you have a persona on your
website you would create you know put a
Gravatar image you you know use Gmail
primarily so you have like Gmail a gmail
G+ account with like the image on there
too so like the chorus everything lines
up and has the image in person on there
cuz he'll remember right they'll
remember your face on there and
everything so yeah and next is Brian
asked what's the risk of the writer
stealing the content I would say low it
would be more likely that other people
would
and in fact that it's a perfect lead-in
Brian thank you for asking that this
happened to Jim from the starting from
scratch case study so this happened like
two weeks ago or so maybe three weeks
ago to Jim and we recorded a video about
it and like Jim texted me he was like
hey somebody stole my content they
published it on their site and there's
like 40 posts that they basically
rewrote so we recorded a video and
within a week you know there's a couple
things to do I'll just be brief here
because there's a whole video coming out
on it but you find their hosting company
and you file a DMCA which is the digital
copyright millennium act and the hosting
company basically took their site
offline within a week so you don't
really stop them so much like Google
does know that you published it first
but if you find it what Jim found it and
I'll explain how he found it deeper in
the video but basically he saw him
SEMRush that a particular site was
competing with so many of his terms he
was like that's weird he took a look at
the site and they basically ripped off
his site so it sucked but within a week
we had their site offline superfast and
I've actually had a couple consulting
clients that I've worked with where they
hadn't actually they didn't even know
someone copy their site but it didn't
quick audit saw someone copy their site
and again but in a week we took them
offline
so the and I mentioned this in the video
I think I'm publishing next week by the
way
but basically you could try to reach out
and email those individuals but it's
kind of dumb right like they stole your
content they're not gonna negotiate with
you or be reasonable in any way so I was
just like okay just file this thing and
we'll take care of it which then okay
and John says you respect my time Thanks
and you'd be happy to
for the time that's cool I'll answer all
your questions if you pay for the time
so yeah you can shoot me an email and if
you're gonna initially project.com slash
hire - me you can send me a message
there and I always get back to it okay
and then tiana says asked does my wife
like researching yeah I think I think
she does like researching but there's
also like a stress component that I
don't like in there where it's like come
on like can't we just like do this like
we're not we're not gaining anything by
further research so and you know what a
lot of people will pay you for research
especially if you'd like it and it's
deep in certain areas people will
definitely pay you and let's see yep so
so Brian over like overall and I know
some people can't see the chat so I'll
you know some of the conversation going
on so if they see like it is scary
because people can steal your content
and then republish it as their own and
the thing is if they actually put if
they actually put sorry I lost my train
of thought there yeah completely lost my
train of thought
I saw a couple other questions come up
so okay so leo says how confident were
you that they copied you if someone took
my site offline there's a hundred
percent chance I would have an attorney
send them a demand letter which is the
first step of sealing so Leo good
question probably 95 percent sure so we
go into it a little bit into the video
but when I tell you now basically they
were very specific kgr posts for very
specific things and
there they copied the subheadings and
then rephrase the some of the copy not
all of it but somebody copy they use the
same images also so as you know their
problem they're probably reading this I
project by the way as you know the kgr
content is like really like not
competitive like people don't publish
much of that content which is why it
works so the point is basically like
copied it and I think hired someone to
rewrite it so they used like so many of
like you like the articles were the same
they were formatted the same as well so
that was number one number two the
hosting company didn't I skip some steps
but basically the hosting company
contacted or attempted to contact the
owner of the site and they did not
respond right so it was probably some
people that like we're putting up dozens
and dozens of sites they probably copied
a lot of other sites and the hosting
company tried to resolve it they tried
to ask the people that infringed on the
copyright to explain themselves they
didn't respond so they took him offline
yeah cool all right looks like it's
winding down a tad but yeah Leo you're a
hundred percent right if that happens it
would definitely be like an issue but
they just didn't respond and didn't do
anything so any other questions on the
Facebook side over here oh cool one more
and
Paul just mentioned you know on the idea
of having your your site copied so Paul
said the his site got hacked a couple
weeks ago
and it took a few hours and a lot of
stress to get it back online so this one
thing maybe I'll cover in the future
YouTube video is like backing up your
site so I didn't back up my site for a
long time I had like the Erb I backed it
up but it was on the same server right
so you can set up like you know full
database like all your folders to be
backed up but if it's on the same server
and then there's a hard drive or the
machine crashes or something bad happens
to the actual server
well that backup is gone so you really
have to backup on a daily basis off of
whatever server you're on so I use
managed WP and it's like a couple bucks
a month per site and they back it up on
Dropbox it's fully I mean it works
really well and Paul mentions that he
has daily backups to Dropbox so it works
really well and then you know you can
restore and you know go back like if you
update to the newest WordPress version
and for some reason crafters your site
because the plugin isn't updated or
something like that
you could always restore it and easily
get it back so you know manage WP is
what I use any other questions on
YouTube on the YouTube side ok so while
those questions are coming in I'll
mention you know if you have a second I
think it'd be great if you liked and
commented on some videos that always
helps me out I think everyone watching
here probably is already subscribed to
the channel so I really appreciate that
I keep talking about it but really soon
I'll probably publish the video of like
the like the analytics on the YouTube
side and if I just like through it
out for you there I mean basically I was
taking a look earlier my YouTube like
watch time which is sort of the metric
that I'm looking at it was something
like this where basically looks like I
got I have some sort of coffee grounds
under my fingernail so that's
embarrassing but really I'm not that
dirty
basically I this was like around the may
time period and I'll show actually I
could show everyone because Facebook
can't see me well over here so basically
this was like May over here and then I
stopped doing as many webinars because I
was tired and I didn't want to do as
many webinars so my watch time on
YouTube went down which is sort of the
metric that I watch as part of the
reason I do such long videos which I'll
come back to in a second and then when I
started doing these daily live streams
like watch time went up cuz all all you
good people stay on here for a pretty
long time so even if it's not that many
like there's high engagement people are
chatting there's more and more people
watching on Facebook which is super cool
and then this part right here where it
starts going back down this one my
account got bands for live streams so
we've made like great momentum and it's
really cool like when I extend the graph
out which I could actually do on the
analytics when I share my screen and
stuff like this sort of growth like
consistent growth was kind of amazing
because I had ups and downs and you have
spikes depending on if something's going
well but when my live stream went away
my watch time went down and now it's
starting to go back up just a tad so
hopefully I'll be able to and actually I
lost almost all the momentum like that I
had so hopefully I'll be able to recover
it and you know double down and actually
