Q&A with Doug Cunnington of Niche Site Project

all right I think I'm live now cool
stuff Huntington here from Mitch psych
project today is Friday and I've been
logging questions all week longer than
that even I've been logging questions
for a while so I'm going to answer a
bunch of questions today I'm going to
answer a bunch of questions today and if
you ask questions in the chat I'll
answer them all so I did I seeded the
you know the description with the few
questions I'm just going to answer off
the bat so we can get started quick and
yeah we got some people on we got David
on what's up and I'm doing the same
thing I did the other day so I shared in
a couple Facebook areas I shared on
Google+ which I don't know if that
brings any people in and on LinkedIn
interesting thing one of my buddies back
from Atlanta happened to be on LinkedIn
right when I was going live haven't
talked to him in years and she came over
to watch so who please sort of
reconnected a little bit and that's
pretty cool because I don't do much on
LinkedIn but that could be an area where
I explore more so if you do have
questions if you're just joining up you
could ask questions in the chat of
course I have a few questions I'm going
to answer that people were asking a few
weeks back and so forth and I see fuck
is on I'm not sure if I ever pronounced
your name correctly but I appreciate
that you come on and watch so that's
cool I will I think you know before I
get into the questions I know a lot of
people are gathering up to to watch so
over the last couple weeks I was you
know basically like onboarding the new
students for five-figure niche site and
working with them a lot there were I was
doing basically what it did is I didn't
tell anyone that I was gonna have like a
15 minute chat with all the students and
I just emailed them and had
setup time so it actually actually took
a lot of time but I got to talk with
almost everyone that was able to
schedule it and it was awesome so I
think it was a nice surprise for people
and it took up a lot of time so it took
me a bit to get ramped back up and I met
with my mastermind group earlier this
week and I just I realized I was it was
in sort of a holding pattern and I was
scattered in general so I needed to
regroup and this morning I just woke up
early at like 5:00 and then started just
like writing out all these ideas that I
had and then I realized hey there's a
lot of ideas I need to pare that down so
it was good this morning I didn't I
didn't get as much like stuff done like
tasks done but I've got a lot of stuff
out of my brain so hey Sarah what's up
and a meal so today this is just like
Q&A day so you can ask questions I do
have several questions I'm going to
answer and I'm going to start right now
okay so the first question that we have
here and these were just sent in over
time so and once I answer if you all I
have a little a little story about it as
well so first and this is around niche
sites so for internal links do I relate
the post at the bottom of each article
or do you just link internally within
the content and by the way I literally
just copied and pasted these questions
from emails so I may have to read them
more than once to understand because a
lot of times it's the grammars I'll just
say the grammar is bad it's broken
English in a lot of cases so a lot of
times I'll read these and they actually
don't make sense to me and no offensive
people it's okay if you don't write it
perfect English I don't write or speak
perfect English but it's just hard to
understand sometimes so do you for
internal links do you relate the post at
the bottom
know what that means really but but
basically they're asking how do I do
internal links I put them wherever makes
sense right so sometimes it makes sense
in the article I'll link it and
sometimes it doesn't quite make sense
but I know I want to put some internal
links within an article to another
article on my website so I'll just put
it somewhere like at the end of a
section and just say hey if you're also
interested in you know authority sites
because you're interested in niche sites
then you may want to check out this
article so it's as simple as that and
you don't have to make it more
complicated than that the second
question is any tips on this any tips on
a way to make this site look better for
a guest post okay any tips on what to
look for in the site for best SEO
benefits of a guest post you know I'm
not even really sure what this person
was asking exactly so I think basically
they were just trying to figure out how
to do SEO benefits for guest posts and I
would say make sure the site has traffic
and make sure the article that you're
writing is relevant to the topic that
you're trying to link to so if it's
relevant then it doesn't necessarily
have to be a blog that's in that niche
it just needs to be a and it just needs
to be a guest post that has the right
yes theme that fits with whenever you're
trying to to link to so and cool Sarah
says Sarah mentioned it seems like a lot
of people in my niche rely on social for
their traffic sister
that my content sprints or is it better
to set them foundation first so this is
a good question when Sarah is a
five-figure niche sighted student so
she's talking about the Sprint within
the actual course so Sarah I would say
if you're in like if you're active in
one of the social media channels then
you should you know think about being or
putting that in one of your channels I
will say that if you like social media
can work to bring you traffic I haven't
personally done it but I know that maybe
Pinterest is really big in certain areas
and you can get a lot of traffic that
way I will mention that you should
definitely be active like it won't be
overnight like in the same way SEO won't
be overnight the social traffic won't be
overnight and you'll have to spend time
it'll take months most likely to build
up that traffic so you really need to
choose if it I mean I tried to do some
Pinterest work and actually buy the
course let one of my friends that was
working with me some take the course and
she was into like Pinterest so it made
sense for her to try and work on
Pinterest for one of my sites and it
just never quite worked out and I think
it would have required just more time so
we did about eight weeks and I was
expecting to see some traffic but there
was like no additional traffic so I
pulled the plug and you know
scheduling-wise it wasn't working out so
it made sense to just pull the plug on
the on this situation and would it be
interesting to train get social traffic
maybe did I care about it no so I just I
left it but if you're into it then you
can you know you can spend time on those
social media channels if you want to
specifically for the Coursera
just do the stuff in the course for the
first sprint and then reevaluate after
you get like your first 10 or 15 guest
post landed a good question and Emil
says to talk about the microphone setup
yeah I can't tell you about that second
and okay
third question from this person sent in
questions is how do I manage guest
posting campaigns do I use any other
tools especially when when finding
multiple outreach campaigns
simultaneously things can get
unorganized okay so I manage everything
that I do is simply as I possibly can so
I use Google sheets that's it I use
Google sheets with a few columns and
that's it it's the same you know
multi-tab spreadsheet where I can manage
like multiple DEA is working on the same
campaign all in one sheet and it's a
template that's in five for your niche
site there are a couple more like basic
templates that I've released otherwise
but I haven't released like the the most
awesome one that I use that's just in
the course okay and last question sent
in is do I mixed naked URL keywords with
generic terms like here in this site or
do I just use keywords I usually put one
in two links and other blog posts and
one backlink in my guest post and try to
negotiate some interlinking to my guest
post with it over I never use a naked
URL I think that's something like gray
hat people would use more often because
maybe they're more aggressive with their
anchor text or something like that I
know the only time I see
people talking about using and making
URL is if they're doing grey hat stuff
and they're talking about like what they
want to put in a private blog networks
for me I I kind of worry about it I just
put like natural links in but I do use
generic terms like here in this post or
whatever and otherwise and use keyword
rich like longer phrases so that's what
I do and as far as you know other links
I just I do random stuff right so just
generally I try not to follow patterns
I think patterns are probably bad um
cool cool okay
we got some more questions coming in
awesome all right so Emil asked about
this microphone set up he says it sounds
very good thank you
this is an odd odd odd x i5 and i bought
it like several years ago so I can like
record my guitar which I'm not a very
good guitar player but so I can record
my guitar and I I'm not sure I think I
just I wanted to buy something or
something like that like I went to
Guitar Center I was like let me go get
it I went with a buddy and I was like
maybe I'll get a microphone like I've
just been using like a little tiny
microphone and you know this was like 10
years ago and this microphone is like
one of those that they would use like on
stage and they would like mic and amp or
use it as like a vocal mic it's the
dynamic microphone so it's pretty good
and it actually only picks up like right
in front so if the truck drives by like
you probably won't be able to hear it
and if I'm talking to people in Skype I
can just have the speaker's on my
computer like online so I could just
hear it it's like speakerphone and it
won't echo like it just picks up right
in front of it which is awesome and then
I have a small
all em audio hookup and this is the XLR
like microphone so it's like one of
those fat microphone cables so I have a
small interface down there where I could
plug into XLR and then hook it to my USB
port so it works out really well and for
a little while I was just using like my
iPhone like Apple earphones with a mic
and it's mostly fine but it picks up a
lot of extra noise and so on but this
really like works well and I mean the
big part is it doesn't pick up like the
external noises around here as much
nothing is particularly noisy but it's
just you know it's better to have a
clean mic of course and Lisa
Paloma awesome
you found me live by accident that's
cool thanks for hopping on you've heard
me in the kgr podcast before okay so I
must have talked about the kids you are
definitely giving it a try great let me
know how it goes most people seem to
have good luck with it and do I have any
case studies about that yeah actually I
have a couple a couple if you go to
niche niche site project calm and look
for something like the two-step process
to 10x can't remember the title exactly
but if you go hunt around there are a
few posts about the keyword golden ratio
and if you just look for kgr and there's
a search bar at the very bottom some
people were beating me up because I
don't have a search bar that's very
apparent but Lisa if you look around you
should be able to find some of the
specific case studies but in one
instance and you may have heard this on
the podcast
whichever one you listen to where I
added like
200 articles to a site over about five
months and it helped a lot there was a
lot of traffic revenue went up
dramatically so it works well and
probably there's a lot of people on here
that can tell you like they publish
stuff on their sites and it did start
ranking in a way that they haven't been
able to figure out otherwise like for
years they haven't been a holy kiss
stuff to rank and they publish like one
or two kgr articles they do break John
says is there a way to figure out income
potential for a particular snitch I'm
sure there's some way but you know I
don't know what that is and another
thing I will tell you is there are these
calculators for niche site potential and
niche site potential value and I'm
pretty sure it's all bullshit to be
honest with you I have no clue how they
can figure out that sort of information
you can make a lot of assumptions and
you can make assumptions about traffic
conversion rates the price of products
and stuff but you have no idea like how
many products people are gonna buy in
your cart over time so I think some
people just put it together for a week
and I'm you know what some of them are
my friends so I'm not calling them out
personally I'm like that's a pretty
smart way to get people in I think the
information on those is probably garbage
because there's too many assumptions and
too many unknowns so so John's answer
your question is there a way to figure
it out maybe I don't know what it is
I've never seen anything that seemed
accurate to me and I think there's too
many factors and variables to make it a
exercise worth doing okay david says
when I post in relevant Facebook groups
you get a bump in traffic for a few days
but nothing long-term and this is on the
the social channel stuff so you
that is true I have seen that quite a
bit you know especially like in in
Facebook groups I mean I could give the
example for a niche site project in
Facebook groups if I share some stuff
yeah I can get traffic to go up for just
a couple days but it spikes and then it
comes down and the nature of social
media is like the freshest stuff stays
up there for like a second and then it
goes away so it's not really a good
long-term solution Pinterest is an area
where in you know and I guess most other
social media you do have the ability to
like schedule things over and over and
like psych recycle the same post so you
may be able to work something out like
that but for me it's less interesting
and I'm not a big social media person so
I have low interest in it just in
general okay Sarah says do I recommend
keyword research for guest post or just
go with what feels right for their
audience I usually don't do keyword
research for it I just go with what I
think they would probably accept Fox
says I went to start with a hundred
bucks cool you could do that for sure
you should need to get hosting and then
you need to you know write everything do
everything else on your own but yeah you
can start with a hundred bucks so be a
little tight but you should use a free
theme and then with a hundred dollars
you should be able to cover your hosting
cost Tonya says as a beginner which
niche is suitable you know any of them
are fine like pick something that you're
kind of interested in you're gonna be
spending a lot of time on it be sure to
check out the keyword research like free
training there are several videos on the
topic but any niche is fine
those you know webinars and they're like
hour-long hour plus trainings and those
will kind of give you an idea like what
to approach so you'll have to do keyword
research and figure it out I would say
go to go to like a big huge site like I
don't know like top ten reviews and
you'll see a bunch of different
categories and niches that you can go
look at so go look at those and if
they're on a big size like top ten
reviews you know they're profitable so I
will say don't try to start a site like
top ten reviews or something huge that's
crazy just you know be sure you do focus
on a specific area Mohammed says I would
like to add for the guest post if your
website looks authoritative then it has
a higher response rate yeah that's true
so normally if you have a dynamic
homepage rather than a static affiliate
page it'll work better it also helps to
have enough info post yeah that's true
Mohammed definitely that is something I
say often you definitely don't want to
have affiliate content on your homepage
that's dumb that's not going to be
helpful for you and get a guest post or
just you know like networking within
your niche people will just see you as
someone that's trying to make money
rather than someone who has like a site
that you know people would go to often
um Johan says do I think the classic
silo structure has gone since Google
prefers holistic content silo seems to
be just the opposite of holistic content
let's see a couple things one I don't
think I don't use the silo structure I
think maybe it's useful for like
organizing like information on like a
ecommerce site or post and
ages on Commerce site I actually I don't
know what you mean by holistic content
and I also don't know that I agree that
Google prefers holistic content - you
are making some assumptions I'm not
saying the wrong I just don't quite
understand and but in general I don't
use the silo structure so I just do a
lot of interlinking I think the spirit
of your question Johan is probably
correct and I'm just getting caught up
in the semantics of it all so but yeah
just in general interlink your site a
lot and it should be a good thing
Mohammed is just telling us facts which
is cool Mohammed I like that you're
providing value here Mohammed is just
saying he's just stating facts for us so
you can scroll through Flippa and look
for websites to get an eye about idea
about the earning potential of related
websites that is that is a fact that is
the thing you could do I will caution
you though Mohammed that I mean it can
give you an idea of what a site could
earn but the thing is like we don't know
like how good any of these stuff on the
side is so if you look at say a survival
site and it's only making like X amount
and it has let's say it's making 500
bucks a month and it has like 400 pages
like you can't really draw a correlation
I mean like that is just that one data
point so it doesn't really tell you much
and I'll also say a lot of the sites on
Flippa
are pretty equally they're kind of bad
right a lot of times you're not going to
see like the cream of the crop there so
that is something that you can't shrimp
on Hobbit and it does give you
information it doesn't give you like the
right information I don't think it's
better than the
some of the tools about like how much
your niche site can make it's probably
better than that since they're real
actual sites but at the same time
someone could have a site that doesn't
convert very well because the content is
really bad and it would be like a poor
assumption to go on that alright Mohit
says what's the best way to promote a
purely review based site with not much
value of addition what's the best way I
don't know if it were me and someone
came to me let's see
Rohit do you also want to do it for the
cheapest price process possible because
I bet that's coming too and I'm just
giving you a hard time rocky I would say
low heat add some other content on your
site or you can like do the same thing
that I've mentioned a couple times right
I'm gonna saying that you should have
watched all the previous videos but Roky
go out there and network within the
niche try and get guest post and if the
content on your site is actually good
and valuable you can probably get a link
to your affiliate content so I'll leave
it at that
just because you don't have like a like
value addition or as is your terming it
informational content it seems like you
don't have much information or content
that's totally fine you just need to go
work a little harder and try and get
those guest posts or you know what if
you are just doing a purely review based
website and you don't want to get guest
post go out there by some pbn links buy
it from a good reputable provider and
then just use PBM links so you don't
have to do guest posting right that's
just what I do but if you're just doing
you know review site you don't care
much about the content you don't care
about the niche much just go out there
and get some TV n links pay for them and
then go that route PB n links work
they're just more risky I don't do it
myself but it sounds like you know if
you're just if you're not trying to add
much value you're not really into the
niche just go out there and buy some
links and I would say you get what you
pay for so you should probably like try
to buy more expensive links from better
sources John has a follow-up question is
there a certain number of organic
traffic that needs to be reached to make
about a hundred dollars per month I
think it's about seventy-five to a
hundred visitors per day to one post so
it doesn't need to be one post and it
does depend on the price of the products
that are on your site of course but in
general if you can get you know
seventy-five to a hundred people per day
to a specific page you're probably going
to convert like one or two percent so
that means you'll probably make like a
sale or two per day that usually can get
you pretty close to the hundred dollar
mark I've seen it multiple times on
sites that I have had and I've seen it
multiple times on like student sites in
my peers that seems to be sort of
threshold sheik says is it good to
combine adsense and affiliate programs
on the same site it depends
me personally I don't do it I just stick
with the Amazon affiliate program in a
quick favor so everyone that is on right
now it looks like we have a handful so
you just hit the like the thumbs up
button which you should see below the
video I hope just to give us a little
interaction and just hit the thumbs up
and I
it's so chic I would say each piece of
content should have a goal if your goal
is to get someone to go to Amazon then
you should not have Adsense or other
like things on right if your goal is
however to get people to click Hudson's
banners then you should not have
affiliate links on there so your content
should have one goal not multiple things
most of the time when someone shows me
their site can have Adsense on there and
EMA they're really trying to build the
Amazon affiliate site I tell them to
take the Adsense off it's just a
distraction
usually they're only making like a
couple bucks a day max and it's just not
worth it to have it out of there you
should just get it off and really just
focus on what they're actually trying to
do okay
ranee says when building an amazon
affiliate site should I go broad or just
make it around a specific topic whatever
you want I mean I guess you're asking
what I recommend so it's funny cuz
sometimes when I get the questions in
like I do things a certain way but it's
not the only way to do things so Ronit
is really up to you do you want to go
broad or do you want to go near up and
I'll tell you this if you go narrow
you're probably gonna make money faster
you may not make as much but you'll make
it faster and you can grow your site if
you want to if you go abroad I'll almost
guarantee there's not you're gonna run
out of steam you're gonna run out of
money you're gonna get bored with it
before you start making money and quit
there are a ton of science that are like
top 10 review type sites and people put
hundreds of posts out there and they
work on it for a year and a half and
they quit but friends that have done
things like that they just go to broad
they try and compete with you know the
wire cutter and then they can't figure
out why like their site is ranking stuff
so we're need so if I'm giving you
advice
I would say make it Nero okay so in
Brook heat the follow-up he says good
prices okay so so basically yeah I would
say if you just have like a purely
review based site just go out there and
buy links row he says what's my take on
the Google updates happening every month
since March you're seeing as high as
