Why Isn't My Niche Site Ranking in Google? The 1-PAGE SEO Checklist (SEO for Authority Websites)

off page SEO let's talk about it my name
is Doug Cummington I'm the founder of
niche site project I write about Amazon
affiliate sites and how I apply project
management best practices to make it
easier to build an online business so I
give this question all the time and it
comes in a different form each time but
the core of this question is I have a
website usually it's the niche site and
it's not ranking well in Google what can
I do to make it rank better in Google so
that I actually get traffic to my
website 90% of the time I know exactly
what the issue is it's very simple and I
think the people actually know what the
problem is even when they said the email
not and I'll get into the details in a
second I do want to mention you can get
a checklist for off page SEO if you head
to the the link is in the description or
I think I'll put one of those fancy
links in the information area the
information box and you can follow that
link and you can get this off page SEO
it's just a one page PDF that you can
use to help you assess your off page SEO
now all right I'm going to get to the
punchline here basically most people do
not have enough backlinks to the website
normally a person is trying to rank a
specific page and they need links to
that page now a lot of times someone
will actually get backlinks to their
site or to the specific page it's
important to make that distinction if
you're trying to rank a page or a post
for particular search term you need to
get links to that page not just your
site in general but to that specific URL
so if you get links to that URL there's
a couple things you need to check also
right so it needs to be a high quality
backlinks so if you say do a bunch of
blog comments it's nice to have those
right
it's a great networking tool and I blog
comments all the time it's a great way
to you know later apps for guest posts
we make friends with bloggers so blog
commenting is a good thing to do however
if you only do blog comments it's really
unlikely that you're actually going to
rank that page that URL based only on
blog comments just not going to happen
Oh the only time okay fine the only time
it could happen is if you have a very
low competition search term that you're
going for say a keyword golden ratio
type piece of content that could rank
with maybe a couple blog posts sometimes
you don't even need anything that's kind
of the magic of the keyword golden ratio
if you don't know what the keyword
golden ratio is by the way look it up I
have a video about it you can check out
the details there so back to the off
page SEO portion the other side of the
coin right so a person may have a couple
backlinks to the URL that they're trying
to rank but they don't have enough so
the thing is you need to have more than
you think it's really hard to judge how
many backlinks you're actually going to
need but a good way to check that is to
look at your competition and look at
their backlink profile you can go to a
tool like hrs or Majestic and you'll be
able to check out the backlinks that
they have or at least a subset of the
backlinks they have so that's really
helpful you should take a look there and
sort of catalog the number of referring
domains one and then the number of just
do followed backlinks now I kind of lean
on the referring domains as the real
metric that you're looking for but you
can get a good assessment by looking at
the number of backlinks that they have
and you can sort of assume that you will
need
a comparable number of backlinks maybe
you need to get more backlinks than that
or you need to get more authoritative
backlinks so those are basically
backlinks from better sites so really
what it comes down to when people ask
this question or when honestly if I look
at a page that I'm trying to rank and I
make an assessment of you know the thing
that I need to do 90% of the time
I need more backlinks you just need to
go out there and get more guest post you
know some people are in favor of private
blog network that's pdms and you know
personally I don't use PBMs anymore
it's a little too risky for my risk
tolerance but hey you know what private
blog networks work great and if you know
how to implement them properly and
manage them in a way that reduces your
risk then you know go for it you can get
PBM links and they work they work great
for me I kind of approach things a
little more conservatively I want to
have a long term asset of a website I
don't want a Google algorithm update to
knock my site out and I don't want my
site to be penalized for any reason so
when I have time to write I'd rather
spend a little more time even if it
takes twice as long to have an asset
they don't last much longer I will
definitely take the time to go out and
get guest posts like I mention it I will
actually do blog commenting campaign I
will make friends and make contacts I'll
network within the niche and then
that'll allow me to go out there and ask
for a guest post maybe if they really
like me they'll just link to my site
because they know who I am
so when it comes down to it and I'll
summarize this when it comes down to it
if you're not sure why your website or
why your page is not ranking for the
term that you're hoping it will rank for
chances are you need more backlinks
you probably need a lot more backlinks
than you think you need and you know
there's no harm in getting more
backlinks than you actually need because
over time your competition will probably
trying that backlinks too so if you stay
ahead of them you're always getting a
few more backlinks then that's a good
thing if you're sitting at number one
you probably need to be getting some
backlinks also because again your
competitions coming after you so if you
stay ahead of the game that's a great
way to handle it now I will add another
caveat before we finish up this video
your on-page SEO needs to be tight you
need to have you know the right amount
of keyword density you need to have the
you know a good number of rich media
some multimedia need to have images that
are keyword relevant it's great to have
YouTube videos on there I mean this is a
whole other set of things to look at but
your on-page SEO needs to be tight if
your on-page SEO is not right then your
off page SEO doesn't even matter so they
do go hand-in-hand and it's a
prerequisite to have the on-page SEO
properly done before you even go out
there and start a you know link building
campaign of any kind so that's the
conclusion here most of the time you
just need more backlinks if you enjoyed
this video I encourage you to check out
the other videos I have you know I think
