YouTube Rewind 2019 Reaction - A Business Owner's Perspective

 Oh, YouTube.
You had a chance to redeem yourself but--
(electronic music)
Hey my name's Pat Flynn,
I wanted to talk about YouTube's
recent 2019 YouTube rewind video.
This is a video they put together
at the end of every year,
sort of sum
ming up their
previous year on YouTube and how
things have been going for the
creator community there.
Now you might remember that in 2018,
that rewind video was a massive disaster.
(laughing)
- [Will Smith] Oh that's hot.
That's hot.
- The most disliked video in YouTube history.
Currently with 17 million dislikes
and from a business owner
and an entrepreneur's perspective
I just thought it'd be really
interesting to see how they were gonna
react to this year,
and what their rewind video
would be for 2019,
and it came out,
and in all honesty
with just unknowns of what they were gonna do.
Meh.
But they did a couple things right
and some things that I think could've
been much more improved upon
and I don't know what they're gonna do
in the future,
it just seems like they were very
careful because it was just such
a negative response from last year
that they kind of pulled back
a little bit too far.
Essentially what this video became
this year is just a recap video.
Top tens of all kinds of things,
most likes, most views, all that stuff.
But they did, like I said,
a couple things right,
and they kind of fell short in a
couple of other ways that I think
they had an opportunity to
take advantage of,
but they just didn't.
So, let's talk about it.
All right, number one.
The first thing that they did right was
immediately when you start watching this video,
and I'll link it in the description below.
They own up to their mistake.
(pop music)
They are upfront saying,
"Hey, we created something that you
just absolutely hated last year.
This year, here's what we're giving ya."
And I think one of the biggest lessons
that you can learn is that when you
make a mistake and you mess up, like,
you better own up to it.
This is in relationships,
this is in business with your customers
and this is if you are a big, giant
corporation like YouTube.
This reminds me of Domino's Pizza.
Domino's Pizza a number of years back
had an ad campaign.
(stutters)
An ad campaign.
They ran advertisements,
basically calling themselves out saying,
"Hey, our pizza used to be good,
but it's actually terrible now
and here's what some people are saying."
- [Customer] Pizza crust to me
is like cardboard.
- Is this why we watch this stuff?
- Yeah, that's hard to watch.
- Can either use negative comments
to get you down or you can use them to
excite you and energize your
process of making a better pizza.
We did the latter.
- I thought that was really smart
because they just called themselves out,
they weren't trying to pretend
like their pizzas were always good.
They were just saying,
"Hey guys, we messed up,
but we're gonna take this opportunity
to get better."
And that's kind of what
YouTube did here saying,
"Hey, we gave you something last year
that you didn't like,
but here is something that,
hopefully you will."
And unfortunately, a lot of people
still don't like it.
(whooshing)
Before I go into a little bit
of the things they lacked on,
and things that they can improve on,
let me first cover one other thing
that they did very, very well here,
better than ever in my opinion.
They focused on featuring the community.
With the top tens and sort of like
a rewind and a recap, which again,
is kind of boring to a lot of people,
I like this comment here from
Smooth Yoda on this year's video.
It says, "This rewind is gonna be better!"
Rewind 2019 stats.
- Boring.
- And that's really what it was
it was stats,
but within those stats they did
a really good job of featuring
a lot of the community
throughout music videos,
throughout entertainment videos
and other things like that.
They featured a lot of people
and in the end portion of this video,
really does a good job of highlighting
people that I've never even
heard of before,
which I wanted more of,
and I'll talk more about that later.
But they featured the first people
to get ten million subscribers in
different countries all around the world,
certain people to get to certain
big milestones in YouTube that were
in other countries or different ethnicities,
featuring and focusing on the
women creators here on YouTube,
and I think that was really smart,
and I think they need to lean into that
a little bit more.
But let me go into the two things
that I think they could've improved on,
which may have been a reason why
a number of people have been reacting
sort of lackluster related to this video.
But here's what they could do.
The first one here really was gonna be
the most difficult one to get over,
and that's the expectation that the
YouTube audience has for what
YouTube rewind should be.
They pull back so much that it's now just
stats and top tens versus what it used to be,
which were these high level productions
featuring a lot of the creators on the space,
a lot of well-known people that most
YouTubers are watching,
and they got rid of that,
and because of that it just
pulled back what people expected so much,
that it also was lackluster
in reaction here,
and currently the video has more
dislikes than likes.
I don't imagine it getting
more dislikes than last year, but who knows,
we'll see where it ends up.
So this is one of the things in business
is when you deliver
and you do so well for so long,
when you make a mistake,
if you pull back too much,
you're still gonna not deliver,
and so I think that they almost
hit the bar so high so early upfront
that there is now an expectation
to always create videos like that,
and that's kind of where they got
in trouble last year.
They wanted to keep going higher
and higher and higher
and they crossed that mark of just
what people wanted,
and now they've pulled back so much
that it still doesn't meet those
expectations of what it is.
I think one thing they could've
done is just said,
"You know what?
Rewind.
We spent a lot of money on it,
we bring all these creators in,
there's a lot involved.
We're not going to do that anymore."
Just be upfront, maybe the CEO
or somebody high up in YouTube says
this just to kind of set the tone that,
"Hey, we're just gonna reward and highlight
those who are performing well on the platform.
We're not gonna make it this big
production anymore.
We're gonna put money back into the
creator's hands instead of
spending all this money to bring them out."
But of course they're being hit with
other fines and things that maybe
is taken away from that as well.
But anyway, that's my thought.
And then finally, they had an opportunity,
and this was a mistake,
to feature people that
weren't so huge on YouTube.
Yes, they were featuring the top ten likes,
the top ten subscribers,
top ten all those kinds of stuff.
But I can't relate to that,
no one who watches this video goes,
"Oh yeah, that's gonna be me one day."
It's basically like,
"Oh here is just a highlight reel
of all the big YouTubers who are
already getting a lot of
massive exposure anyway."
I would've loved to see,
similar to the tail end of the video,
how other creators from around the world,
but how about the new creators,
what were the fastest growing
new YouTube channels that we can say hello to
and reward and feature.
Who are the most interesting stories
that were there on YouTube that
weren't about the numbers,
but about just how we all felt
and just maybe,
which one got the most comments,
which one got the most thumbs up
within a comment,
or I don't know.
Just different ways to highlight
other people who don't normally get
featured would've been really nice
on YouTube rewind because I think
this is what this is all about.
You know, most of the creators
on YouTube fit that bill,
it's more relatable if you actually
feature some of them,
and I don't know how one might begin
to start to explore, like,
how you would define who would get on
YouTube rewind or not in that situation,
but instead of YouTube rewind
it should just literally be called
the way it is structured now.
Just, "Here are our top creators"
and that's it,
and to me that doesn't feel good
as a creator.
I don't know if YouTube's
goal in this
is to encourage creators to create,
but that's not what it's doing for us,
so highlighting more of those stories
that are unseen would be
an amazing thing to do for the future.
So, anyway, Team Flynn let me know what you think
in the comment section below,
how do you react to YouTube rewind,
did you even watch it do you even care?
Probably not.
But I just had some thoughts from
a business owner entrepreneur's perspective,
and would love your thoughts too
in the comment section below.
Let me know what you think.
Thanks so much, I appreciate you
and make sure you subscribe so that
you can get some more videos
and things that are headed your way
in the future,
and for those of you who I don't
get to see until next year,
Happy, happy new year.
Merry Christmas, happy holidays.
You're amazing, thank you so much.
Peace.
