Amazon Keyword Research: Find The Best Keywords To Optimize Your Amazon Listing

hey this is stefan from
projectlifemastery.com and if you're an
Amazon seller and you're selling
physical products on Amazon through
Amazon FBA or maybe just selling books
through Kindle publishing or create
space then you probably already know the
importance of keywords that you got to
do the right research to determine the
best keywords for your Amazon product or
Amazon listing and optimize your listing
for it and if you do that then it's
going to make your life so much easier
to get sales on Amazon because now you
have the best keywords that you can rank
for and you can actually know which
keywords are actually bringing in sales
and getting you the best possible
results this is an ongoing process
that you have to do if you're selling on
Amazon is tweaking modifying and
identifying the best possible keywords
for your listing it's also very
important for running Amazon ads because
if you're gonna run ads on Amazon you've
got to determine what are the best
keywords that people are searching for
that you can get your Amazon listing in
front of that's going to convert the
best and equal the most amount of sales
now I've got a really amazing training
that I'm gonna share with you guys today
with my friend Greg Mercer from the
jungle scout Greg is a very successful
Amazon seller with jungle scout he's got
the best Amazon research tools and
software out there and he's gonna share
with you guys a training on how you can
find the best possible keywords for your
amazon listings that I think is really
gonna impress you and blow your mind and
it's a must have for any Amazon seller
so I'm gonna let Greg take it away for
you guys and share if you guys step by
step by step how to find the best
possible keywords for your Amazon
listing yes Stefan I'm happy to do so
and thank you so much for having me on
keyword research is actually like one of
my favorite topics you know it's
important for a few different reasons
the first reason is this is how you get
found on Amazon right it doesn't matter
if you're selling private label products
or if you're selling Kindle books
amazon.com and all the Amazon platforms
are very keyword driven you know I'd say
like 99% or more of customers on Amazon
go to the Amazon search bar and they
type in what they're looking for and in
order for you to show up in the results
and
has to know that that keyword is
relevant for your particular product so
keyword research is very important from
that aspect but also on the other are
the second reason it's very important is
if you're doing any type of paid ads on
Amazon's platform so if you're using
sponsored products or if you're using
paid ads for your Kindle books this is
how you are bidding on different
keywords right you it's a relatively
simple ad platform and all you have to
do is find keywords choose your match
type and bid on those different match
types but the first part of that
choosing your keywords is the most
important part so juggle scout recently
you know a few months back now released
keyword scout which everyone has given
us feedback that it's really the most
robust and powerful keyword research
tool on the market and that's true for a
few different reasons let's go ahead and
do an example real quick
so a lot of people know that I sell
bamboo marshmallow sticks so we'll use
that as an example and there's a few
things that really set keyword scout
apart from all the competition right so
the first one which is actually the most
technically challenging thing is the
results that are given for a particular
seep keyword so the seed keyword that I
typed in here is marshmallow sticks and
what you'll see here is the keywords
that it returns our keywords that we
found people search for and then end up
purchasing marshmallow sticks alright so
let me explain to you what I mean there
so some people type in the word s'more
skit now s'mores kit doesn't include the
keywords of marshmallow or sticks in it
right but what we found is people type
this word in s'mores kit and end up
purchasing marshmallow sticks now if you
went on a lot of our competitors or
other keyword research tools out there
what you'll find 99% of the time is they
just use the term marshmallow sticks and
tap on our tack on words like before or
the middle or after it okay which this
is fine keyword scout gives you those
words as well but it also gives you
words that doesn't necessarily include
any of the seed keywords so the results
that it gives you are the best in the
industry and that's what really makes it
so powerful it also shows you exact
match and broad match search volume and
we actually get this search
directly from Amazon so this isn't a
drived piece of data we found a way to
get this directly from Amazon so this is
really how many searches people have had
on Amazon in the past month for this
exact match marshmallow roasting sticks
okay just in case you don't know let me
explain the difference real quick
between exact match and broad match with
the exact match they typed in this exact
phrase so marshmallow roasting sticks
these three words in this order with no
additional words before in the middle or
after it okay it does include stemming
Zoar plurals and misspellings but other
than that they have to type in this
exact phrase marshmallow roasting
cinnamon sticks with broad match they
can actually type in this phrase with
different or with added words before in
the middle or after it okay so if I
typed in bamboo marshmallow roasting
sticks that would be a broad match
search or marshmallow long roasting
sticks that would be a broad match
that's between an exact match and broad
match I'll just blast through the other
ones real quickly it shows you the
dominant category for that keyword if
you're selling private label products
this is how many units we think you need
to give way on a daily basis for one or
two two weeks to rank in the top three
spots and then we see some pay per click
recommended bids here so HSA bids that's
the headline search ad on Amazon and
this is the bid that we recommend you
would have to have in order to get a 90
percent Winry you also see exact match
and broad match PPC bids okay and the
exact match and broad match the
definitions are the same as they are
with search volume so you can use this
to go through and find what keywords
would be relevant for your product and
have a high search volume but have
relatively low bids and those would be
good ones for you to bid on and just
real quickly the last two columns used
to rank we've figured out that like this
particular keyword marshmallow roasting
sticks is quite easy to rank for it
compared to just marshmallow sticks so
the higher this excuse me is the other
way around the higher the score the
easier it is to rank so actually this
one marshmallow roasting sticks is more
difficult to rank for than what
marshmallow sticks is with 100 compared
to 15 and lastly just roll
nc score that's just how relevant this
keyword is to your seed keyword so we
found that people do type in hot dog
toaster and end up purchasing
marshmallow sticks but it's actually not
that relevant so not that many people
who type in hot dog roaster end up
buying Marshalls likes but a few of them
do so that's why it has a low relevancy
score alright so that is kind of the
basics of how you go about doing your
keyword research so with um selling a
new product and I'm trying to create my
listing right now I usually do this ok I
start with whatever two or three
keywords I think are most relevant for
my product okay so I've typed in
marshmallow sticks and what I can do is
I can select all and I can create a new
keyword list for this so let's do
project life mastery example alright so
I can create this list and then it's
going to add all of those keywords that
I was just on to that particular list so
that's the first keyword I did another
keyword let's I know that people use
these bamboo marshmallow sticks also for
wooden plant stakes alright so I can
type that in and then I'll also go ahead
and add all these to my keyword list so
my private lid alright and then
something else that's really cool about
keyword scout and really sets it apart
is not only can you do seed keywords but
you can also do a reverse
Aysen lookup alright and let me explain
to you real quick what that means and
why it's important so let's do
marshmallow sticks alright and I'm going
to find some one of my competitors so
let's find this one's mine right here
and there's one competitor it's actually
above me so let's find them and we're
going to take their Aysen all right
which is right here or you can scroll
down and grab it from this spot right
here this is also the Aysen right here
so I can grab it from here and then I
can actually go back into keyword scout
I can paste this
Aysen
and what it will do is it will show me
all of the keywords that this particular
product ranks on the first five pages
for okay so this is different than all
the keywords that they're indexed for
they're probably indexed for a whole
bunch of garbage keywords that aren't
very important but they're also ranked
on the first five pages for 619 keywords
and I can see that right here so I see
these roasting steaks
there's 619 results and these are all
the keywords that they rank for so the
reason that I do this and the reason
that this is important is I find
oftentimes people actually don't know
what keywords are the most relevant for
their product you know you could be
calling these things campfire sticks
when really the general public normally
refers to them as roasting sticks or you
might refer to them as wooden skewers
but when reality you know I see that up
here marshmallow roasting sixes actually
has the most search volume so that
should really be your main keyword and
then I can do the same thing here I can
select all of these from the list and
then what I can do is I can add them all
I can either select all of them or can
select individual ones from the list and
then I can go here and add all these to
my keyword list again
alright so now all those have been added
and now after doing multiple searches
okay on both my keywords as well as my
reverse Aysen lookups I now have a full
list of keywords that I can use for my
particular listing so the next thing I
do is then I would take all of those
keywords and I would build my listing
from that and/or I would use all those
keywords to create my sponsored products
campaigns so it gives a little bit of an
overview of how I go about doing my
keyword research I would do it the same
if I was either doing a private label
product or if I was doing it for Kindle
books and yeah that's how I end up
creating my listings so Stefan what kind
of questions you have for me man I know
I kind of blast it through that but I
wanted to give a good overview yeah this
has been awesome Gregg thank you so much
this is so powerful and I wish I had
this when I first started so hopefully
for those of you that are out there
Amazon sellers or start
you realize the power and the benefit
that this can provide for you because
otherwise you know I think people
they're just trying to guess when it
comes to keywords and they don't really
know what's the best keyword that they
should try to rank their product for
then also when it comes to maybe
secondary keywords are the ones that you
know they wanted optimize their listing
for they're also not quite sure which
ones are the best ones for them to to be
able to target and what you're providing
is all that data that Amazon is giving
you so that you can use this information
and determine the search volume the
competition and also optimize your ads
so I think this is incredibly valuable I
did have a few questions for you number
one is this data on a monthly basis when
it shows like the the search volume or
what period at a period of time is this
information yep that's exactly right so
this is on a monthly basis each keyword
gets updated about one to two times per
week and it's the previous 30 days
behind that update so you will see that
keywords are seasonal and I do change
over time and we update those like I
said a couple of times a week and it's
for the previous 30 days and something
you kind of brought up that was a really
good point there Stefan is that you know
some of the other keyword research tools
on the market are either built for
something like Google or Bing or
whatever else or use that data to
estimate what search volumes are on
Amazon and I said this earlier but
keyword scout actually gets the search
volumes directly from Amazon and what we
found is they are quite a bit different
than like search behavior on Google
right we're now finding now that Amazon
takes up more than 50% of online
e-commerce that this is actually the
search engine that people are going to
to purchase products whereas people now
are using Google more so for like how to
change the oil in my car or you know to
research the sickness they have or
whatever else so the search behavior is
very different so it is important to use
a tool specifically for Amazon that gets
their data from Amazon got it yeah I
agree
Amazon is a very different search engine
than Google so you can't really compare
the two and what's it what countries are
what Amazon platforms does this two
support yeah great question so right now
a keyword Scout is supporting only the
US but by the end of this year 2018 our
plan is to release it for all of North
America as well as the EU so if you're
watching a replay of this in the future
and it's already like 2019 you should
have all these different platforms on
there now got it but I guess it'd be
safe to say that if there's certain
products that are selling well or get a
certain amount a search volume on
amazon.com that it's you know can be
also the same that UK or Germany or
these other countries but it will
obviously probably be a little bit less
just because of the overall volume I
guess on amazon.com so it's still you
know useful I think to use just to
determine the overall demand and market
for whatever product that someone's
gonna sell
yeah totally like I'm sure you know like
marshmallow roasting sticks in this
scenario would be the most searched also
like in Canada you could project expect
the overall search volume to say be like
10% of what it is right here that's a
good point and in terms of I guess if
someone was to use this for the product
and let's say it's a marshmallow
roasting sticks one question I get from
people is how do I know what you know
Amazon gives you the option of adding
multiple keywords your Amazon listing
but when it comes to adding those
keywords and really optimizing I guess
your listing or identifying which
keywords you want to throw in there
would you pick other keywords that are
relevant to marshmallow sticks like for
example roasting sticks or do you think
you kind of spread yourself a little bit
too thin by trying to target too many
keywords instead maybe just picking
three or a certain amount and really
just trying to optimize your listing the
best way for that that's a great
question
so out of all the words that I put on my
keyword list that I built for this I
would wanna include all those keywords
on my Amazon listing okay now look what
I'd like to do is I like to search sort
by search volume here and what I've done
and I like to choose the keywords that
are most relevant for my product and
have the highest search volume to put in
my title okay so we know that Amazon
weighs the keywords
in the title the most heavily when
they're determining like the relevancy
for your product or the keywords for
your particular product okay so for my
if I was selling marshmallow roasting
six I would definitely want to include
marshmallow roasting sticks in my title
I would want to include s'mores and
maker
I might not do hot dog toaster since the
relevant relevancy score for that was a
little bit lower and for me that's not
quite as relevant for marshmallow sticks
but then I would want to include things
like s'mores kit camping utensils or
maybe even garden stakes so my title
since I'm allowed to have two hundred
characters would say something like
marshmallow roasting sticks are great
for making s'mores and camping utensils
and then like also work well as garden
sticks something along those lines so I
would try to put quite a few of these
main keywords out of high search volumes
into my title got it and I guess in
terms of using this data for Amazon
sponsored ads I guess one thing someone
could do is they could take this whole
list and run ads you know target all
these different keywords with an Amazon
ad and they'll be able to get the data
to see you know what I guess you know
which ones are converting the best for
them which are the keywords that you
know are getting the most traffic and
whatnot is that is that typically what
someone would use this for when they're
trying to run sponsored ads yeah that's
exactly right so you know when it comes
down to like success with the sponsor
ads platform on Amazon really comes down
to your keyword research and your bids
for those different keywords okay so
like you can never have too many
keywords when you're doing your keyword
research when it comes to sponsored
products because what you'll find is
like those a little bit more obscure or
niche keywords those are the ones that
not as many people are bidding on so you
can get clicks for a lot cheaper on them
so what I like to do is out export this
entire keyword list which is very very
long as you're gonna see I would upload
that into sponsored products and then I
would start usually with whatever is the
recommended bid that's listed here I
would let that run for a couple weeks
and then you know items that were
sorry keywords that were profitable I
would continue to run keywords that
weren't profitable and you know it took
too many clicks in order to get a sale
those are the ones that either decrease
my bids are positive altogether so
that's kind of how I go about doing it
got it and I guess you know you could
also look at what keywords are
converting and which ones aren't and the
ones that maybe aren't converting maybe
you determined that you no longer want
to try to rank for those keywords and
you don't need them in you know the
keywords area when they're trying to
optimize for organic search on Amazon
too so that information is really useful
as well yeah totally
so for example you know like this one
like money pit you know this is showing
up in here because we have seen that
someone's searched for this and end up
buying marshmallow sticks that being
said I'm guessing this woman wouldn't
convert very well for my marshmallow
stick so this is probably one that I
wouldn't end up wanting to continue to
run I'd probably find this one's
unprofitable got it now would you mind
giving an example for a book so let's
say somebody watching this they have a
book that they've launched on Amazon
maybe it's a Kindle book or paperback
but maybe a key word like meditation for
example and maybe you could see what you
know what it pulls up for that
absolutely so this is the meditation
search tons of search volume on Amazon
for meditation right the broad match
which as a reminder means that other
words can be included before in the
middle or after it gets almost a quarter
million searches every month so you know
if you're using this for optimizing
either your Kindle books or creating new
Kindle books this is also a great way to
find new ideas right like meditation
chair gets a ton of searches headspace
meditation bowls so you know you can use
this like if you're passionate about
meditation you're writing books around
this subject this is a great way to
think of additional topics right like
ways are like best types of floor
cushions for meditation or you know
whatever else so yeah this is a great
way to find search volumes so you can
decide what topics you'd want to target
and then just like I spoke about earlier
with like a using private label products
I would
also want to use a lot of these keywords
in my title and bullet points and
description so that I rank well for
these keywords when people are searching
through books got it and you know even
someone that's selling a book they can
use this data for their ads as well
because another meditation book and you
want to target people that you know are
searching for headspace or meditation
cushion and you cannot offer your book
there as well it could be a great way to
get some additional sales for your book
and it's great that it shows the
category as well because that's
incredibly useful to see you know which
category because obviously that will
influence um I guess how many you have
to give away and everything to be able
to rank not just for the category but
also for the keyword as well I want to
ask you about I guess the recommended
giveaway is that a I guess the amount
that also not just to giveaway but to
sustain the ranking you know would you
have to get a similar number of sales on
a daily basis in order to sustain that
top three ranking spot yeah so the way
you can think about this is essentially
this is how many sales you need to be
making on a daily basis in order to
sustain it so to get started most people
do giveaways in order to get those
amount of sales but after that that's
how many you would kind of have to have
to sustain it so since we're talking
about books I also you know I sorted by
the dominant category and that way I can
also see all the different types of
keywords that primarily return books as
the results so again this is a great way
to be thinking about new new types of
topics our areas to expand into or
whatever else and the nice thing about
this is you can export this whole table
here and then you can sort it our filter
through it or however you like you know
pretty easily just using Excel got it
awesome awesome Gregg well thank you so
much this is so valuable I think for my
audience that is selling physical
products on Amazon but also those that
are publishing books this is something
that they will absolutely benefit from
and can use to help build their business
get more sales reach more people so guys
