- Hey what's up Team Flynn, Pat here.
Now the other day I had the amazing opportunity to interview
Marques Brownlee, also known as MKBHD,
somebody who I really look up to.
So that was really exciting.
But, more than that I was able to dissect
and understand exactly how he got his start on YouTube.
If you don't know who Marques is,
he has an amazing YouTube channel
with some very, very, high quality tech review type videos,
but he's even now at a point where he's able
Like Elon Musk, he interviewed Elon Musk in a recent video
and his YouTube channel is approaching
eight million subscribers at this point.
So what I wanted to do in this interview
was really understand, well how did he get his start?
What were his beginnings like?
And through that conversation I found out
five very surprising facts about how MKBHD got started.
So, that's what I'm gonna share
with you in this video today.
So you're actually gonna see clips
from this podcast interview which I recorded
both on audio and video.
If you want to listen to the full episode,
I actually have the link below to my podcast,
where you can hear the entire interview.
But for now I'm gonna share with you these five surprises
that I learned about MKBHD at his start,
and the first one being how many people
he was actually creating videos for
and how many videos he created for such a small audience,
which is gonna sound pretty crazy.
- I made my first 100 or so videos for less than 100 people,
so I think it was just kind of a fun thing I enjoyed doing.
And at that time, obviously, YouTube's much smaller,
much earlier, and I kind of had the benefit,
I was in high school, I didn't really have to worry
about whether or not it's sustainable
or whether or not I was doing the right thing.
It's just a hobby that I found a lot of joy in.
One thing I've learned about entrepreneurs
and people who are just creators in general,
a lot of times people quit before that inflection point,
but Marques had given him enough time
to see that inflection point, and that inflection point,
that extreme growth, finally came as a result
of one particular video that eventually spiked
that was a result of actually
what people were searching for.
- There's a day that Safari, the web browser,
came to Windows and so the day that that happened,
I was really excited about it.
I made a whole video, how to download it, how to get set up,
bring in your old bookmarks, all that sorta thing.
The next day I woke up to that video
having thousands of views instead of a few dozen.
So way more than people who were
even subscribed to the channel.
I think that was kind of a light bulb moment,
like well I guess people are searching
for this type of thing, so there's an audience to be had
and people care about timely information like this.
- We also got into a little conversation
about how he actually generates an income.
And going back to the start,
he was talking about the YouTube Partnership Program,
which is if you're a YouTuber you had to apply for
to even gain access to the possibility
of earning money through AdSense
and advertisements on your videos.
Here he is talking about just how difficult
that was to even get accepted in.
- The YouTube Partner Program was something
you had to apply to get accepted into back at that time.
And so I remember specifically applying and getting denied,
and once you get denied I think there's a six month period
where you're not allowed to apply again,
so you had to really know you were gonna get in.
And then I was denied, I waited six months,
I applied again, was denied again.
Waited six months, applied again, was denied again.
Waited six months and then was invited.
- Interesting.
- It was a weird, yeah it was sort of a long process
of obviously literally making no money
but continuing to make the videos because that part was fun.
- Now after you start creating,
after you start building an audience,
after you start making money,
often times the next step for you
is to start to build a team.
So I wanted to learn more about, well how big is his team?
And how long had he actually been doing business by himself?
And his answer was really surprising to me.
- The channel is in year ten now,
and for the first eight years it was just me.
- First eight years.
- [Marques] First eight years.
- No way.
- Yeah, first couple hundred, nearly a thousand videos.
- Editing everything, publishing, the whole shebang.
- From top to bottom, yeah.
And that includes the inbox and the management
and the production, the tax
and all that sort of stuff that comes with it.
- It juust goes to show you that you don't need
to spend a lot of money on a team right away.
And very similar, I worked on my business
for about six years until I finally hired somebody.
Although, that being said I would go back
in time if I could and hire people sooner.
Because I've now realized just how important time is
and how much money you can get back as a result
of hiring the right people to do things faster
and better than you, but Marques is awesome.
He's been able to, despite not having a team for so long,
build an amazing community, and that's super inspiring.
Now the last thing I learned about him
that was very surprising, was his take on sponsorship deals.
So of course at this level now, with such a big audience,
he's getting a lot of companies
and brands reaching out to him,
probably offering a lot of money to work with him
and have him discuss those products on his show.
So we talk about how does he determine
what products to talk about and what products to say no to.
- It comes down to what I would wanna watch.
And a big part of that is actually getting to use a product
if I can talk positively about it.
So this has happened many, many, times
in the last couple weeks and months where I'll get an offer
to do a sponsored bit about some product.
And I've never used the product.
And my first response is usually,
if you'd like to send the product first and let me try it.
Then I'll decide yes or no.
And usually that gets a yes and the product gets sent
and I can decide at that point.
If they say no then missed out.
And then it gets to the point of
if I actually like the product,
or if I like the device or whatever it is.
Then it sort of goes from there.
- So hope you enjoyed learning
about those things about MKBHD.
I got to know him a little bit better
and through the podcast episode,
which you should all listen to.
The link is down below for the full episode
on my website and on my podcast,
it's just a really, really, interesting talk.
And again just super thankful
for having the chance to do this.
I also have to thank you Team Flynn.
A lot of you on Twitter, when I had just proposed
that it would be amazing to interview him
had stepped up and said yeah this should happen.
And I think that also drew a lot of attention his way
to see what I had up to and got him on the show.
So again thank you all so much for being a part of that
and being a part of this.
Click the button below to listen to the podcast
and make sure you subscribe to that
in addition to this channel.
And I would also like to know for those of you
that do follow MKBHD, let me know
what one of your favorite video is.
Mine for sure is his interview with Elon Musk,
who is also a hero of mine.
And it was really cool to in this interview on the podcast
figure out how that all happened, which he shares.
Again, make sure you click through
to the podcast to listen to that.
Thank you Team Flynn.
I appreciate you for all of your support.
And I look forward to interviewing
a lot more higher level people
like Marques in the future as well.
I often think that I don't have value to offer
and that maybe my community isn't big enough
because it's not as big as these bigger players.
And you've proven to me that that's just a limiting belief.
And I have a lot to offer too.
So thank you so much Team Flynn.
I appreciate you.
Marques, if you ever see this, thank you as well man.
I appreciate and Team Flynn for the win.
