teardown so we're gonna look at outdoor
gear lab which is an amazon affiliate
of other brands and products or sorry
programs as well not just Amazon which
we'll get into but this is part of the
series and there are a lot of different
affiliate sites that are teardown so
we'll just get into it here and you'll
see you know right now I'm on the blog
post that goes over this and there's a
narrative is a pretty long blog post
that I go over a bunch of others at
least fifteen or sixteen other sites so
you should definitely check it out of
written insight project you can follow
the link below but what we're looking at
here is sort of critical data that I
consolidated from different tools and
websites in that sort of thing then once
we take a quick look at the critical
information the stats that we have for
outdoor gear lab we'll take a look at
outdoor gear lab look at some of the
reviews and some things that I like and
some things that I don't like that they
do so starting from the top outdoor gear
lab was founded in 2010 back in February
sounds like they have quite a few
keywords in the top 100 so over a
hundred and ninety thousand which is an
astronomical number is really a huge
site and when we get to it you can see
how large it is now the estimated number
of visitors from semrush and similar web
vary a lot as you can see so about five
hundred thousand from some rush and then
over two and a half million from similar
web I'm pretty sure they're both wrong
right it's just an estimate but my guess
it would probably be like a million per
month or something like that purely a
guess but it's usually in between these
two you know if I had to make an
estimate then as we're looking here
about the number of keywords in the
traffic you can see it's
you know slow-growth there's been you
know periods where there was more rapid
growth but you know this is the number
of visitors per month that show up and
you can see you know it's it's kind of
on this small decline right now but you
know I think that's just a small small
hiccup right here and it looks like they
haven't really been impacted by any sort
of algorithm updates at any point in
time no major drops or anything if you
watch some of the other videos in this
playlist around Amazon affiliate
insights you will see some that you know
you'll one of these little points in
time and the timeline here and that does
represent Google algorithm updates and
traffic will drop right traffic will
drop a lot so as we're moving on here we
can see that the domain Authority at
least the time that I pulled the data
was like 48 so that's pretty darn
authoritative the Truslow is 30 it's a
lot of trust there are about 3,500
indexed pages which is a lot that's
really a whole lot then average time on
site is over three and a half minutes
which is a really long time
so if you think about times when you you
know look something up looked at the
information the last time that you
probably stayed on the site for three
minutes I mean it's it's a pretty long
time so next is pageviews per visitor so
almost four pages per visitor which is a
lot a lot of the other like very small
niche sites they they would only get
like one in some change so this is a lot
almost four it means people are really
interested in looking at a lot of
content and they're staying there for a
while so those are probably the main
reasons why outdoor gear lab has been
able to you know stick with a really you
know high amount of traffic and
continually grow now we'll go
over to outdoor gear lab here this is
their homepage you can see it's pretty
simple overall you know pretty basic
logo nothing crazy
it does seem you know more
professional-looking than some of the
other you know cheaper smaller affiliate
sites and you can imagine I mean if
they're getting that much traffic say
five hundred thousand to a million
visitors per month they're probably
making like a crazy amount of money so
this is probably fairly professional but
it's simple right
it's a simple you know what a mountain
in a in a what is that a flask there an
Erlenmeyer flask and it's cool like it
makes sense that's a lab kind of setting
and then gear for outdoor so awesome
looks good big you know high high
quality image here talking about
mountain bike so we'll see some of the
great keywords that they go after it's
be dive down
they have men's and women's clothing
footwear camping hiking climbing biking
snow fitness and travel so they cover a
huge amount of information a huge amount
of pride products and I mean that's
probably why they're doing so well I
have such a huge amount of traffic well
also notice you know there's a search
area here actually it's a search link I
didn't mean to click over there but you
can also search right there I will
scroll down in a second and we can see
it's kind of a you know a great layout
this is what I recommended by students
in five figure niche site this kind of
not exactly the same as far as the
homepage but you want to have like a
jumping-off point
personally I wouldn't have a huge image
here I would maybe like put that lower
so when you first see like where you can
click around you may be drawn to oh I'm
gonna
bike biker a cyclist I'd click here and
then you jump off or if you're into
shoes
good shoes you can go there but the
thing is they have these you know the
most popular reviews here so they allow
you to you know jump off and then they
go really deep and granular into like
specific different products and you'll
notice these are the menu items from
above right up here to men women
Footwear and so on
so men women Footwear camping and hiking
so what you'll notice is they started at
the top with only like one main choice
and then they as they went down they
gave you more choices like here three
and then they they divided up a little
bit more right and then they divided up
very granular like the top there must be
ten maybe so the top ten things for each
of the sections and I think that's a
great way to do it they even get into
okay so they have a new site here so
well maybe that's something I'm gonna
check out so tech gear lab which is
sounds like the wire cutter in a lot of
ways so anyhow as we're going on I
didn't have best-in-class reviews recent
gear reviews and recent articles so
these are probably informational
articles over here on this side and then
these are just straight-up reviews for
specific things like you know talked
about keywords before so here's a great
one best winter dance sleeping bag
there's one that's satellite messenger
and personal locator beacon and best
hiking pants for women so if you go to a
site like this like outdoor gear lab or
baby gear lab which is like the sister
site they're owned by the same people
you can just sort of cherry pick the you
can cherry-pick the keywords that
they're using here and it's pretty
straightforward
next we have you know subscribe to the
newsletter there's a motorcycle outside
so pardon the noise they're one of my
neighbor
has a motorcycle and a couple key things
so they they mention here we buy all the
products that they review they test it
the environment retail prices to make
sure its objective and independent and
they don't accept free evaluation units
and they talk about their process here
on the about page which is what we're
gonna take a look at here so we'll take
a look at the about page and it's a nice
nice high quality image colorful it
looks like they're actually like using
stuff here and it's very similar to baby
gear lock in fact this is the exact same
theme which is a custom theme I believe
for baby gear lab and outdoor gear lab
so they updated it at this point that's
been a couple years ago but the thing is
they talk about how they review the
stuff and this is super close to what we
see in like the sweet home the wire
cutter and they do a really good job on
describing how they test the items which
is a much higher grade than most
you know Amazon affiliate niche sites
this is you know a true company where
they buy the products and then they
review them they set them up and they're
basically experts on whatever topic
they're looking at here so as we're
going through you know it talks mentions
their initial round of testing in 2010
and 2011 and you know you can see they
are actually testing them out taking
notes and providing like really good
reviews it is a huge differentiator and
it's hard to compete with that unless
you have a huge budget and you're
actually able to buy the gear so they
have you know editors choices that go
into more detail about what they're
doing editor's choices best buys and top
picks
they provide budget information and they
talk about other sites that they have so
baby gear lab super topo which I think
that was originally the
like the origin of this whole like
Empire of affiliate sites so super topo
if you check it out I was the original
outdoor do lap was the original gear
review section on super top up and then
they they they partnered with some
people and they you know through their
site huge so the other thing is they
actually have you know a social
following so that's good to know and I
guess we can take a look at some reviews
now let's take a look at
the best winter day on sleeping bags of
2017 so one of the interesting things
you'll notice on outdoor gear lab baby
gear lab is this you know custom bead
that they have so it's a tabbed system
here so the overview is here and then if
you click on ratings it shows you a
different view and it's a table
situation and they have a little detail
got the price they have the score and
then the ratings here and they have 11
listed in this case it varies per
product they're reviewing and it's kind
of cool you know if they have like to
see this ratings view and price versus
value chart so they kind of you know
made up a chart and then you know place
the specific items on the chart so you
have an idea that you know the highest
rated one is like the most expensive one
there's editors choice but if you wanted
to get like the highest value for the
lowest price would be you know probably
this one next is buying advice and you
know how to choose the best and sleeping
bag for cold weather so it actually sent
us to you know different section this is
a pretty long like how to choose the bag
this is like the ultimate buying guide
section you'll see they put a lot of
time into it they're using you know
longtail keyword kind of stuff here for
in details for the h2 tags most likely
but just some headings we can call them
and you know they're not too crazy about
the they're not going crazy with the
subheadings as far as using long tail
keywords so these are just you know this
is just well-written
overall and as we're going to how we
test so they go through all the details
on how they test it you can see they own
all the stuff they're actually out
cold weather is very legit right I would
trust this we got some cool pictures too
mmm we'll go back to the overview I
probably should have done this first but
you can see they have a little bit of
all the information here so it's details
very detailed char they should only show
you the first five and by the way you
can get all the keywords for this site
or at least a thousand of the keywords
for outdoor gear laughs if you go to
niche site project /youtube keywords and
I'll put a link below this video so you
can check it out but here you can see
they provide you with the editor's
choice and they give you a price so that
here's another affiliate program not
just Amazon but it's camp saver and
that's sort of filling it like here and
this we're going through you could see
it's best buys the top picks and so on
so they give a little mini review for
each of these and then they also have a
full review that they link to they have
it set up in a silo so if we actually
were to click on this and open it up
you'll see that this is you know part of
the winter sleeping bag section here and
then they go deep talk about the
specific sleeping bag pictures of this
one in the show it even you know packed
out next to a beer camp looks like so
that's cool and they you know show you
how you know small I can pack down so as
we're going through you can see it's a
very long and a very thorough review and
we go back to the overview page you see
they have a big table and they have you
know again more images you can tell
they're reviewing they're actually
looking at these products so this is
really good to see and you know without
going too much farther you can see that
they really thoroughly review up
testing a lot of tables so it's pretty
hard to compete with a site like this
since they do all the reviews all these
items they actually buy them everything
and that will conclude this video here
