hey what's up it's Doug Pennington here
from niche site project and hopefully
everyone can hear me so what's up let's
start cutting through from niche site
project and hopefully I'll hear myself
talking and I do cool today I'm going to
talk about the ideal content links for
Amazon affiliate sites niche sites
Authority sites whatever terminology you
may use for that stuff so I see a couple
people are hopping on now I am
monitoring the chat so let me know where
you're from say hello and I will mention
a couple things today we've got a few
announcements so if you're on these very
often then you'll probably know that I
am launching my course this week so
enrolments open this week so today's
Monday it'll be open till Friday end of
day Friday and you should check it out
there's a link in the description below
the video so you can go and check it out
see if it's a good fit for you if you
have any questions about it you can let
me know I see Graham Graham is on
welcome Graham good to see you in fact
Graham joined up today so that's cool
I'm looking forward to working with you
Graham really appreciate the support and
I see a few other people are on if
you're just joining I will talk about
the ideal length for content for niche
sites Authority sides you know Amazon
sites in general but you can sort of
apply it across the board too and I'll
talk about how like it can apply for
like keyword golden ratio content other
content long pillar pieces of content
that sort of thing so we'll get into it
for a second very rare occasion today
that I am on early but you know normally
I'm a few minutes late thing is you know
I shifted from the
seven-thirty time - 11:30 and here's the
reason why I was joining a couple of my
buddies
Jim who you may know from the starting
from scratch case study so Jim and I met
at the coffee house down the street I
walked there in fact and then Stephen
YouTube in fact maybe I'll paste his
channel up here but he's local I met him
at the million cups of them a few weeks
back and he lives really close by and
drinks coffee - so we all met out and
drink coffee sat at a table and worked
really hard and didn't talk to each
other very much and they may be watching
- I'm not sure all right
excuse me we got about ten people on so
I think I could probably get moving and
sort of what we'll talk about today is
the ideal length for content for
affiliate sites so just in a general way
we'll talk about that I'll start with
like key word golden ratio content links
and I'll mention if you don't know what
the key word golden ratio is you can
watch other videos on my channel there's
one called it the key word golden ratio
or something like that and you can watch
that and it'll sort of break everything
down for you if you have other questions
about keyword research there's a whole
like webinar like an hour to two hours
of webinar training that really
addresses like keyword research and the
different kinds of keywords that are out
there but for the discussion today I'll
assume that you know what that stuff is
so the keyword golden ratio content is
what we'll start with and generally what
I do is you know make it just good
enough long enough and then we could
adjust it later so I mentioned like my
data set and why I believe this link
that I haven't told you yet I'll tell
you in a second why this length works or
always proof that it works so last year
around the
time I started adding content to a
particular you know what I call a niche
site but niche site Authority site
they're basically the same thing it's
just a branding situation so my sites
niche site project so I called niche
sites anyhow for a niche site this kgr
works really well and I published about
200 articles between about June of last
year to about October or so and over
that span of what I believe is five
months over that span of five months I
was able to publish 200 articles that
were about a thousand words on average
the minimum was about 800 words and
eventually you know very slowly all
nearly all about 80 to 90% of those
terms ranked in the top 10 usually
within like a couple days some of them
were a little further down some some of
them were a little you know further up
as far as rankings go but generally most
all of the 200 pieces of content did
start getting traffic so again so about
800 to a thousand words on average and I
really left it up to the writer to go
and write between 800 and 1,200 words so
I left it up to them I don't pay them on
a WordCamp basis so they're not I'd
rather them write a shorter article
that's like meaningful there's no fluff
or throwaway you know words sentences
paragraphs and just say hey cover this
information if there's a lot of stuff to
cover make it 1250 cover make it 800 if
you're really struggling it's okay every
now and then there's the 600 word
article for keyword golden ratio content
so from there you know we'll go up to
another length of content and basically
I have this short shorter form right
about a minimum of 800 words generally
and then the longer form content
basically starts at about two thousand
words or so and can go up to like twelve
thousand words or more like if there's
enough content to you know earth there's
enough things that you could talk about
for a particular topic then go for it
like if people are really into a
specific topic then they'll read all
about it
so as as you you know think about the
sheer number of words and like how the
hell you're gonna write that much or
have someone write that much you have to
look at it in pieces and incrementally
grow it so basically I'll publish this
longer form content for more competitive
keywords higher search volume keywords
and then you can start at the 2,000 to
4,000 word range which usually isn't too
hard if you go and do research you can
get to that link and then over time
maybe every couple months or every month
you can find an area that you could
expand on usually you can go deep on
like subtopics within a larger topic
even for a specific product line so you
know I always look for examples on my
desk I usually say a pen but we'll go to
a highlighter a whole other kind of
writing utensil here and by the way you
can keep with the questions all hop over
in a second just trying to make sure I
don't go off into a huge tangent by
looking at the question so highlighters
and there's only so much that you can
talk about with these highlighters but
if you want to add more content maybe
you don't talk too much about like how
the ink is made and if you want to add
more content you can go really deep and
look at like the ink and where they get
the dyes for different colors or maybe
the effectiveness of yellow versus I
thought I had a green or an orange one
around here but you can go deep into you
know why you would want to use yellow
versus green versus orange highlighters
are blue and
about like your system of organizing
based on highlighting and that sort of
thing so you can go like super deep into
something really like boring like
highlighters or pens or whatever so the
point is it sounds like twelve thousand
words is insane if you're starting from
nothing
it is insane but if you're adding a
couple words a couple thousand words
each month or every two months well at
the end of a year I mean you have twelve
thousand words it's not that crazy and
if people are really into Kay particular
item and the research ants are going to
make a big investment
not like highlighters but something else
they'll read the whole thing they'll
read your site that we other people's
websites and they'll really try to
consume the info so I'm gonna hop over
the questions and see what's up so Nix
on with something Nick good to have you
Graham says I he can attest to the kgr
the three months I'd was already ranking
the first and second pages thanks to the
K G are awesome it's really good to hear
and hopefully we'll be able to take your
site you know even further as work
together coming up Emile says hey thanks
for joining to me good to have you on
and Nick is talking about going for
under seventy keyword difficulty but
right now you have to dig into the kids
are stuff more for sure and the other
part is Leo Leo is a is a student he
enrolled like earlier this year but
Leo's awesome he's out he's always on
he's dedicated he's just on to help
viewer account he's muted there's some
stuff going on so thanks Leo when you
watch this later I appreciate you
hopping on here and as as I go through
all you know give you an example cuz a
lot of people push back on like the
really long-form content right so like I
said
10,000 words 12,000 14,000 words I have
a page on niche site project it's like
14,000 words it's really long and you
know people have told me that the
contents too long people aren't gonna
read it like you should really break it
up any different stuff and I take all
feedback I mean I can learn something
from anyone everyone like there's no
thing that I you know think I'm superior
at I just I know people have different
takes and it's always valuable to to
take input even if it's yeah actually
even if it's coming from someone who
maybe they're not because they're not
delivering it in a way that's like
helpful for us to absorb it meaning like
they're just negative and that sort of
thing but even that kind of feedback is
like helpful because you could like sort
through it like don't take it personally
don't take it personally and then you
can like absorb like the real meat of
what they're trying to say and a lot of
times they're still value and negative
feedback which is weird but you know I'm
always open to learning something new
and the point is if it's something that
someone's really into they'll read the
whole thing and they'll read it again
again so this piece of content that I'm
referring to like I know people read in
and their people spend time on it I know
it's really valuable I know they can't
read in one sitting I should probably
put it in to look at the book format
sell it or something but I just put it
on the website and I know people will
come back to it and refer to it that
said I can give you an example right now
like I'm I keep talking about guitar
stuff over the last couple weeks because
it's it's easy because I'm interested in
it right now like specifically right now
so I'm like researching this guitar I
mentioned it last week it's like a
Martin double I like seventeen and it's
like a you know an eighteen hundred
dollar guitar big investment I mean it's
something that it lasts a lifetime
there are you know vintage guitars from
manufacturers that weren't even that
great that are you know
years old sometimes even older if you
care for them and like this sort of
craft craftsmanship that are in those
high-end products like it's worth it to
pay that much the point is I'm watching
as many reviews as I can on those type
of guitars a specific size and the wood
that's used and stuff like that and I
would read you know several you know
dozen pages on the nuances of an
investment that big right and one of
guitars not an investment you know it's
like a car it depreciates pretty quickly
but the point is it could be a cool
thing to have and you know I'm
interested in it I care about all the
details every little detail I would you
know read new material watch new videos
so just learn more maybe there's like
one nugget of information that no one
else really covered and I I would you
know consume all this repetitive
redundant content just to learn about so
the point is this long-form stuff people
read it now from a search engine
perspective the example that I can give
is around the project a white hat site
where basically my business partner and
I Rob Atkinson I looked at the content
that was on the existing page a page
which was making about 10k a month for
several months before I joined up and he
looked at it it's like you know 2,500 to
4,000 words something like that and
basically I was like hey we could do
much better as far as the content we
could make it more thorough more
accurate get add more products and we
went from about you know I can't
remember we'll just call it 3,000 words
and then we added about 8,000 more so we
were over you know 10,000 words and
immediately we started getting more
traffic I'm pretty sure we started
ranking for like longtail keywords which
we weren't actually tracking so I can't
point back specifically exactly the
keywords that
went up for but within I think it was
between 30 and 60 days traffic went up
by about 40 percent revenue went up by
about 40 percent so longer form content
can bring in more just more traffic like
there's more longtail keywords which you
can attract and I see and feel free
everyone ask more questions if you would
like more details here and Jeff is on
what's up Jeff good to have you on Jeff
is a another student on five-figure
Mitch site so welcome appreciate you
hopping on Nick says for a two thousand
plus word article example that would be
along the lines of a full guide and
start with a broad keyword that you can
break down usually yeah so if you if you
go to like niche site projects and this
start here link there's that huge guide
that I was mentioning that's like super
long so if you if you look at that post
there's like the perfect Amazon review
in there and basically yeah you follow
that sort of format and you know as far
as the broad keyword what do you say
break it down it's really like a keyword
it doesn't necessarily have to be broad
it can be sort of the longer tail ish
and it's more based on like keyword
volume competition and what you're
trying to deliver and I will say you
know one thing that does happen and a
few students have mentions to recently
if you rank for a kgr term sometimes
over you know a period of time if it's
doing well you'll start to rank for the
main term which is nuts cuz at first
maybe you're targeting a term that gets
a hundred searches per month and then
when you when you start doing well and
you get more traffic the page is doing
well Google sees it as a valuable page
you'll start ranking for the keyword
that gets like five thousand searches a
month and you'll start creeping up on
that so the point is you can break it
down but
basically Nik you can you know use the
format use the perfect Amazon review
template and then you know treat it as a
modular situation where you can grow it
so hopefully that was clear
next Graham mentions make sure you test
out the guitar in person before you buy
anything for sure yeah the guitar
chooses the guitarist yeah
that's very true and there were two that
I'm playing there's one called like a
Waterloo which is by colons or Collins
um I can't I don't know how to pronounce
that I've never actually heard anyone
say it but they're both around like 1800
and $2,000 and they're sort of like the
smaller like parlor style guitars and
like I have short arms can tell from
here but I guess or to have short arms
so like a normal dreadknot size is not
as comfortable to play which I have a
dreadnought right now just my first
guitar was like 18 years old and you
know it's this on the top but it's not
in great shape and you know it's fine
but it's fun to buy gear so I'm checking
out a couple of those and I'll tell you
that I always wanted to have a Marten so
that's kind of why I'm looking at those
but Dad Waterloo it sounds it sounds
pretty good it's just a little bit
different so I'll probably play those
two but I just got that warm spot for
the Martens you know so gram it sounds
like you play maybe we talk about that
later someday okay bring it back
together Stephanie asks does it matter
if you start with a short post then make
them longer later that's awesome that
was a exactly what I was about to get
into so you could definitely do that
that's a great approach so I usually hit
like the 800 to a thousand word length
Stephanie and then after that after
about two months two to four months or
two to six months whenever I have time
to go back and look a pull a full report
from semrush okay for all the keywords
than
ranking for then I'll do some filtering
where basically I look for the keywords
that I'm ranking from like number two to
like number ten then after that I'll go
back and add more content to those posts
why because those are the ones that are
getting like favorable results you're
they're getting traffic and a little bit
of a tweak can take them from like
number two to number one or number eight
to number two and then go from there but
the point is you know you're taking like
what Google is giving you as far as the
results and how well it's doing and then
you're optimizing based on what's doing
well it'd be silly to you know go for
the term that's ranked like 50th and
then fight really hard and add more
content to get it up to like 15 because
like 15th and 50th it's basically the
same they both don't get much traffic
but if you if you work on the stuff
that's on the cusp then you can like get
a great ROI for there you add 800 words
to an 800 word article that most other
people only have you know 500 words or
maybe they have a thousand words if you
have you know 60% more content and like
useful content that can help the user
and that'll help you get more traffic
hopefully your rankings will go up and
I've done this like over and over again
on multiple sites so I know it works so
Stephanie you're right on you should do
that and as far as like bad on Google's
guidelines if you're doing kgr content
and you're targeting something super
super specific like if you can fulfill
like whatever the visitor is trying to
learn and is you know in 500 words or
400 words then that's fine so you know
maybe it's something that's better
illustrated with images and you have
like six images showing how to do
something and you know you only have 400
words but it's even more valuable to the
user then I think Google can tell that
but as far as like 500 words me
bad by Google's guidelines not
necessarily there's too many factors
involved and then Graham says looking at
Taylor's as far as guitars a nice bright
sound cool yeah you know they sound
great but for whatever reason I don't
know why I just I always want to have a
Martin over at Taylor I don't know why
I've played quite a few Taylor's also
I'll take a look though I'll take a look
you're right grandma should definitely
just go in there with an open mind
playing okay Jeff says when you decide
to start a new article for a more
long-tailed term as opposed to putting
it in the longer article when do you
decide to put a new article okay
such as best carpet or the really long
tail best carpet for dog owners so it's
all based on the kgr approach so if I
found the kgr term like best carpet for
dog owners then I would I mean for the
kids you know to work you do need to
like use that as the title or use that
within the title so it could be like
what is the best carpet for dog owners
so basically Jeff you should put in a
separate article unless you just I mean
you do have flexibility right this your
site you could test it you could put it
in a longer article but if you're trying
to do kgr stuff which I know I know you
are you should create a separate article
and then you know from there things
could happen like the other article
could the wrong article could rank and
then there's specific things you can do
for that which is like beyond the scope
of what I'm going to talk about today
but I know I actually have something
within the course Jeff that could tell
you exactly what to do there for keyword
cannibalization okay Nick says I think
you talked about this the other day but
could you go over the process of adding
more content to a post you don't want to
change too much that is correct
so
basically you don't want to like delete
everything because that could like hurt
your rankings things like too much would
change so I would say at most you know
make some heavy edits to the content but
generally you want to add to it right so
you want it append to like add at the
end more content and you know throughout
you can like add a few more sentences
for certain sections that's typically
how it goes from my content where you
may have like you know say a thousand
words and there are more features that a
particular product line like could start
there are more features for product than
we talked about within the article let's
say we only talked about three things
and let's say it's car right we only
talked about the like the interior
design trunk space and I don't know like
the size of the engine but obviously
with a car you could talk about like
thousands of other areas the stereo the
features as far as the sunroof or like
the trim line rather so you can really
expand that stuff so you can add like
more paragraphs into the features area
you can add more products to review and
that sort of thing but the point is yeah
you don't want to change too much like
don't delete everything and replace it
you basically want to be adding to it
okay dummy says I usually write 2500 to
3,000 words for best of articles is that
overkill usually 10 products that's
short that is the minimum for 10 I mean
like for 10 products that's really short
like you probably could write you know
six hundred to a thousand words for each
primals so 2500 to 3,000 like really
short dummy for that many projects of
course like every you know every
specific case is a little different but
if you like that straight up question
that you just asked like that's pretty
short okay and then Nick says but this
is on the topic of like revising content
so dick says adding new sections within
the article is okay yes having new
sections is awesome that's a thing you
could do and you could definitely like
attract more longtail traffic by doing
that so like that that could be a thing
where like you add new sections using h2
and h3 tags so that you can you know you
know state that you're covering a
specific thing about that topic and you
get the longtail stuff in there you can
use you know keyword rich language so
that you do bring in more traffic cool
all right any other questions out there
and by the way the question today was
from Mary so I'll give a shout out to
Mary should have mentioned that at the
beginning but Mary was not able to
attend like one of the webinars last
week so she asked like a few questions
via email which were kind of long and
she was very appreciative but I was
pretty short my answers but as you know
sort of an alternative to more thorough
answers an email which I'm a slow typer
I thought hey I'll just do one of these
live streams so more people could
benefit from it and she can get a more
thorough answer so thanks Mary for
asking the questions and giving me
something to talk about today I see we
got like 17 people on and since I sort
of described the content length which
I'll quickly review in a second I also
want to say that my course is for sale
this week if I figured niche site is for
sale and enrollment is open from today
like right now until the end of day
Friday midnight mountain time but
basically if you're interested
if you think you're interested you
should check out the link below you go
read the extremely long sales page to
see if you can work for you you know
some people may have a sort of different
interests and it honestly you think with
my courses like it's a lot of work right
I mean there's a lot of work and
probably if you're watching this you
know none of my tactics are hey do this
and it works super fast or you know
here's a shortcut like everything is
sort of a long cut that's built for like
effectiveness and longevity so if you're
interested in something more like
get-rich-quick my course is not the
right one to go for there are many other
ways you can give your money away for
the get-rich-quick stuff it Minds very
much you know it's a commitment there's
a there's a good group a good community
of people that have already you know
purchased the course and helped me work
through some of the you know pitfalls
and things that I needed to go through
as far as developing material and three
very new things like super new one is a
unit on email marketing for niche sites
and authority sites so I have a few
email list for my niche sites some of
which are I guess I guess I'll just said
it's about thirteen thousand email
subscribers on a couple lists that I
have and I've been experimenting more
and more as far as like driving traffic
to new post so if you could imagine you
have a few thousand people on an email
list that you're slowly building up over
time you publish something new you can
you know send them an email and all of a
sudden you get a few hundred people onto
a page that you just published which is
really powerful because you know
sometimes it can take a little while to
ring for stuff the second thing that I
added is and beyond
Amazon associate so in March of this
year it was on adjust with the
commission rates and for most people it
went down like if you were already
making money from Amazon your
generally went down it could be a very
minor impact to a huge impact so I know
a few people it's like five to ten
percent reduction not a big deal they
didn't get hit that hard a friend of
mine she's in an area that went from
like you know she was making like 7%
generally and now the payouts like 1 to
2% of a commission rates her revenue
went down by about 50 percent so I hit
her pretty hard me it hit me about 35
percent it sucked but you know I just I
get more traffic and we're starting to
recover so the third thing they added is
something that not many people can like
actually write with first-hand
experience and that's selling a site for
over six figures which I did in the last
month so we sold Robin on Michigan
before sold aside for like 235 thousand
two hundred thirty-five thousand so I'm
going to put together a full unit on
sort of what you have to look for
preparing to sell a site and how to make
it go smoothly
all three of the units for the added or
brand-new to my knowledge they're not
out there in you know other courses they
could be in slightly different areas but
cut in covered in different ways but to
my knowledge like that that's kind of
new stuff especially the the six-figure
exit and all brand new those are all
advanced right so if you're just
starting you're just starting your site
it's it's not going to be something that
you're gonna be able to happen and
implement that stuff in fact if you
don't have any traffic on your site you
don't worry about an email list you
should be worried about getting more
traffic but anyway all that's inside the
course I'm gonna hop back over to the
questions cool
Nick yeah you gotta go that's cool
thanks for joining up Kent says and this
is a comments Adame what I do for the
best of product is 10 to 15 300 Awards
each plus a nice intro and buyers guide
and
it usually ranks well okay so cool
sounds like Donnie you have the ability
to like add more to your specific
product reviews which is great cuz like
adding more words will just help you and
chances are if you're only doing 200
words to 250 words per product it's like
really really brief information that's
only you know really a couple few
paragraphs and you can talk about each
one of the products and each sorry each
of these features as it relates to the
product so if you go to a site like
outdoor gear lab and look at one of
their reviews they go like really deep
into each feature and aspect of every
single product it's so long they divide
up like most of the reviews like so
they're on their own page in the overall
comparisons are usually you know more
broad they don't go too deep into a
specific product line but anyway dami I
think you get the idea and you have a
great opportunity to expand your content
Matias says are there any good
alternatives to Amazon affiliates yeah
but it depends on your site and then the
secondary follow-up question is does
eBay have the same set up or something
no eBay has a like an affiliate program
but it's definitely something I don't
have as much experience with like its
eBay partners and I have you know some
experience with it but in my like
limited experience it's not going to
convert as well I mean these are
auctions right so I mean you get a kind
of the auction but it's not like it's
going to convert as well as Amazon also
I'll mention when I buy something from
ebay I'm usually just find like one
thing but say over the holidays if I'm
buying stuff on Amazon I'm buying Mike
dozens of stuff like items right
and all sorts of stuff but if I'm buying
something on eBay it's just one thing
and then Matias from like other
affiliate programs perspective yeah
there's just I mean there's an endless
number of affiliate programs out there
you can go to like share a sale and
other similar places and essentially
have like any place that sells any
retail online vendor business usually
there's some affiliate program so you
should be able to find one and as far as
alternatives the Amazon there's no like
specific plug-and-play mean walmart has
program but I think Amazon does more
online business in general but I mean
Walmart has a program too so cool any
more questions out there and if not we
could end it up today and get ready for
tomorrow cool and graham says can you
talk about themes paid free what do I
recommend so just in general if you if
there's a theme graham that you already
own and you know how to use it well and
you have like a couple of templates
where you can have like you know no
sidebar or just a little flexibility
that's really all you need so I mean I'm
an affiliate and I'm friends with people
that own themes and you know every like
people want a theme like made for him I
can respect it right totally cool it can
work fine but if you have a theme that
you already know how to use I say use it
I use you know theme that I'm familiar
with I own like a professional license
for it and it's not one of the Amazon
themes so basically as long as you could
present the information in a clear way
on your website anything will work
my very first site I used WordPress 2012
it was like 14-point black Arial font on
a white background with a header that
had you know it was
an image that I took I took the picture
myself and then I typed over the top of
that that's all it needs to be the main
thing is like you don't want to be
messing around with a theme that has
like too many options or that it's slow
so for example thrive themes is like
super popular and if you see it
recommended a lot you may also notice
that whoever's recommending it is an
affiliate so keep that in mind like
people are pushing a specific theme and
they're an affiliate maybe what they're
saying is it like a hundred percent I
was about to say honest maybe it's not a
hundred percent I don't know it worked
like it's not objective it's it's like
they're pushing a specific you know
they're pushing a specific thing the
example that I can give is if you've
looked at I think niche pursuits like
put out you know best themes for
affiliate sites whatever and like it's a
fine article one of my friends wrote it
and the problem is like the first three
themes that are recommended they're all
thrive themes and it's like okay like
they're trying to push thrive things is
super clear like most of my
recommendations are not based on
affiliate relationship so anyway
grandma's going on and on and on we can
talk deeper whenever we have our first
101 but basically if you already have a
theme you use that if you don't there's
a couple Amazon like optimized themes
that could be a good move for you but
you know just in general as long as you
can use the theme and it stays out of
the way then you should be good to go
all right
oh and Matthew says before you wrap up
