NSP / SEO - Hangout - AMA with Doug

all right hey it's doug Huntington of
niche site project and welcome to this
hangout so I guess it's a little webinar
but it's pretty informal and we're just
going to see how it goes I haven't done
one of these in a while so I thought I'd
give it a shot and we're going to go
over a few reader and viewer questions
that i received over the last couple
days only got a few but i think we'll be
able to talk about a few other things
too so let's see will allow a few
minutes for everybody to get get on and
get started here haven't done a hangout
in a while looks like my my video is
zoomed in much closer than i expected it
would be i'm not sure how to adjust that
so alright hopefully the Lighting's
pretty good it looks like my audio is
all right and we'll go over a little
introduction in just a few minutes here
so I'm going to head over to the chat so
if you if you have any things you want
to say I'll kind of watch the chat over
there as it goes on you'll notice a
window I guess like a chat icon over on
the left side of your screen and you'll
be able to just click on that and chat
however if you want a question to be
answered you should click on the the Q&A
button on the left side of your screen
it's probably where it's at and then you
could ask a question there also if
you're viewing you can upvote particular
questions that you find interesting I'll
be sure to answer those first all right
see a couple people who have joined so
just let me know where you're from in
the in the group chat there and let's
see here still waiting for
other folks that will hang on a minute
and just a reminder to ask questions in
the Q&A section so there's a an icon
probably on the left side of your screen
where you click the Q&A button and ask
your question they're all right and let
me share a couple screens here alright
so i'm not sure if it looks like this
right now if you're viewing live but you
will click the Q&A button icon does look
like that and then you should be able to
go ahead and ask your question there
again if you see a question you'd like
be sure you upvote it so that I know
that's an important question alright
alright we're about three minutes after
the hour so i will get started here in a
second but if you're just joining Doug
Cunnington from ditch site project and
I'll go over some other introduction
type stuff here shortly but just want to
remind you if you have any questions be
sure you ask in the the Q&A section so
I'll definitely go through each one of
those all right I'm going to go ahead
and share my screen here and get started
alright it's been a little while since
I've done a google hangout especially
the hangouts on air so it's taken me
just a moment to find everything alright
we're going to go over a few different
topics today we'll keep it pretty pretty
brief for the most part but we will hit
a couple main topics and I'm just going
to go ahead and I guess present this
hopefully that'll work for us
alright we're going to find a window
here okay that should work and we're
going to go ahead and view this at a
normal ahead of normal size okay
hopefully I'm assuming that everyone can
see the the full screen here so again
Huntington from niche site project this
is generally a Q&A session however me to
go over a couple you know main topics
and a few things that I know people are
interested in so Who am I uh well I'm
Doug Huntington that's my dog Brody
there we took a trip over the summer my
wife and I and Brody and we were going
through the beartooth pass their your
Wyoming or in Wyoming and near
Yellowstone Park and just a quick
reminder i said it a few times but if
you do have a question you will want to
ask in the Q&A section and then if you
like a question that you already see
there be sure to upload it so I answer
that one okay so why I listen to me Who
am I so have a past track record in you
know successful niche sites I had a
couple do really well around 2013 2014
and you can check out my blog for more
information on those currently I'm just
focusing on one particular site right
now versus you know building a whole
large portfolio it's just too much so I
have one site right now and I'm I sort
of neglected it for portions of last
year and I'm refocusing my efforts on
that niche site right now in addition
I've coached probably a dozen or so
people over the last year or so in
various levels
of I guess expertise so some some
beginners some people who were quite
advanced they have several niche sites
and they need help organizing so for the
people that are just getting started I
can show them the ropes about keyword
research actually building a site you
know basically auditing a site that may
already exist so that they can see how
to improve conversions or improve their
on-page SEO or their off page SEO also
very important and then again if
someone's already advanced I may be able
to help them with you know hiring a
bigger team or dealing with HR issues
like that or just organizing their
process so they can really have a plan
about what they're doing um lately I've
been really getting into guest blogging
both for my my own niche sites and just
for niche site project and other
services that I offer which has been
good it helps you know to write on other
people's platforms really to get more
exposure and then really that content is
some of the best that I've done lastly I
am PMP certified so that's a profession
for project management professional and
basically that means I I do project
management and I'm certified by the
project management institute PMI and I
got into that through management
consulting in my corporate career and
just back to the coaching aspect one of
the latest success stories is a guy that
I've worked with for about a year named
Dave and really I only worked with him
from about this time last year january
of 2015 until around April or May and in
December his site I think I haven't got
the final total but last month I think
he did about 1200 on his Amazon site so
that success story is on niche site
project you could check it out it's one
of the most recent
there's also a YouTube video out there
where I you know basically David I just
talk through everything and he wrote a
really long nice blog post so I'm going
to going to pause here for a second take
a look back at the at the Hangout screen
just to see if anybody has any questions
so far and see how the chad is is going
ok and i see if you few questions coming
through so that's great thanks Robbie
for doing that will come back to those
in just a moment alright and then
heading on so expert level knowledge so
that's another reason to listen to me I
have you know a few years experience in
SEO I keep up to date with all the
latest goings on I'm a project
management professional build plenty of
niche sites and I've helped people build
them and also I consider myself an
expert in process improvement and just
analyzing and optimizing different you
know things that you may do or process
so that you can optimize it which sounds
really redundant but basically I could
help you do things better um so and I
mentioned guest posting so I have guest
posts out on Empire flippers I was on
the podcast for side hustle nation I
just had a blog post over age refs I was
on the podcast for niche pursuits and I
have a guest post at Matthew Woodward co
uk and a few other places too but those
were the ones that I just wanted to
mention today all right and I just threw
in some extra pictures here so here's
the family at the Grand Teton National
Park and I think everyone has heard a
couple times if you do have a question
just hit the cue a button and be sure
you let me know and I'll be sure to get
to that question
if you see question on there that you
like you can definitely upload it and
i'll be sure to get to the most popular
ones first all right so why niche sites
and you know I kind of phrase it like
that because there's a lot of excitement
about fulfilled by amazon so amazon FBA
and that is a you know it's a great
business model and people are having
really good success especially with you
know top-line revenue but in a lot of
cases the amazon FBA is kind of
expensive it's a pretty capital
intensive process and from my
observations any revenue you bring in
any profits that you make you generally
have to reinvest most or all of those
profits back into buying more product so
that you can sell it so it's pretty cash
flow intensive and certainly if once you
hit a certain level you can probably
reinvest a fixed amount and then keep
for profit whatever else you want but
you know for a niche site it's pretty
easy and cheap to get started you can
generally just you know get a shared
wordpress hosted or sorry a self-hosted
wordpress hosting plan from you know i
like bluehost there's a couple others
that i like but you could generally get
those for you know three to five dollars
a month for the cheapest plan you can
use a free wordpress theme you can
generally write all the content yourself
if you want if you have more time than
money you can write it all yourself and
there's i mean there's a lot of
information out there too I guess show
you the way there may be too much
information out there honestly but there
is a lot of good information and a lot
of people have started with niche sites
so in fact most of the internet
marketers that I bump into in one way or
another no matter where they're at they
started with some sort of basic niche
site and SEO
then moved into some other larger thing
okay so I'm sort of blending things
together but a niche site does help you
learn the ropes you can I guess figure
out some of your your your first what am
I trying to say here you can figure out
SEO for the first time so both on page
understanding keywords meta descriptions
titles stuff like that and then you know
the other side of it the technical
aspect of you know domains and dns and
just general hosting ft peeing files and
that sort of thing and then you know
themes and installing you know different
design aspects into your website and the
whole technical side so it's a great way
a low-risk way to get into it and
usually you know I said the hosting was
pretty cheap um you can't get cheaper
host but I you know for like a dollar a
month but i don't really advise that
you're better off you know paying the
money i mean it's only you know three to
five dollars a month for a basic shared
hosting plan if you grow you can you
know upgrade your hosting and usually
they just let you upgrade for you no no
just they prorated whatever you've
whatever you've already paid for and
then just upgrade you so it's no big
deal to upgrade to a better host
sometime later and again last point this
site is a great way to grow so even if
you have your sights set on amazon FBA
or an authority site of some kind or you
want to do drop shipping and ship your
own products or whatever in a lot of
cases if you start a small niche site
you can grow that into something larger
so you do have to be mindful about a few
things like the branding so you don't
want to be too narrow so if you're
planning on growing in the future you
may want to select a more broad domain
name and that sort of thing in addition
you may want to you know adopt a pure
white hat
coach where you're not building any
links that are against Google's Terms of
Service just to stay out of trouble and
you can I guess just be sure you do
everything with the fact in mind that
you want to grow the site in anything
you do you should be okay with that
being in place like one to two years
ahead of time so when key thing is you
you do have to have a plan you got to
have a plan so if you if you see all the
content out there about starting a niche
site or an Amazon site or yeah really
whatever you're getting into FBA or you
know drop shipping if you just consume
the information and follow several
people doing generally the same thing
but not exactly following the same plan
it's very confusing and overwhelming
because some people say to do things one
way some people say to do them another
so you should have a plan ahead of time
and that'll really help you out and in
general especially nowadays when it
takes you know three to six months to
you know start ranking well on actually
it's much closer to six months for a
competitive keyword for a niche site
it's just the process is too long to not
have a plan so if you don't you're going
to end up doing a lot of work that
didn't really pay off its not effective
and then you'll end up sort of
frustrated with the whole process and
just you know to re-emphasize that you
waste a lot of time if you don't have a
plan so you may end up doing a lot of
activity maybe you're doing blog
commenting and it you don't really know
why you just read it somewhere and then
you don't have a plan on how much blog
comment you need to do and you end up
wasting your time so no matter what
you're working on it's really helpful
just to write out all the steps you know
think about it on paper and follows
when or sorry or you could follow
someone else's guide if they've already
outlined it so you know you may know all
the steps in your head and that's really
that's great but something happens when
you write it out and you think out loud
on paper and you write it all out so it
really is worthwhile to write it out
even if you think you know what to do a
lot of times you may be able to identify
a step or two maybe that you don't need
to do something that maybe you can
reorder it to be more efficient or maybe
you see some stuff that you thought you
needed to do but you see it's a
duplicate of some other thing that you
did earlier or that you thought you
needed to do earlier in the process so
write it all out even if you even if you
don't necessarily follow someone else's
plans um as far as niche sites I have a
video courses free like I said with when
I sent out some information on this
hangout I'm not even going to try and
sell anything here this is free but yeah
if you need the link just let me know
you can send me an email afterwards okay
let's get on to the questions I'm just
going to click back over to the chat
window to make sure I see what's going
on here okay and we see Robbie got a few
things in there thank you for that and
cool all right so I've got a few
questions ahead of time and I'm going to
hit those first and then I'll get over
to yours Robbie okay so first question
can you explain to me how to select a
proper niche okay so this is a good
question kind of big a big topic and
everyone has a different theory on it
I'm just going to speak sort of
generally because there's I mean there's
not a right answer here okay so for me
especially now that I'm just focusing on
one site or at least fewer sites one at
a time at the very least you should
definitely have some interest in the
topic even if it's only minor
the thing is you're probably going to
end up spending a decent number of hours
working on this project so if you are if
you're not interested in it then you're
going to struggle and this is
particularly important if it's your
first sight so if you have some if you
have some other sites already then maybe
it's not as important because you can
outsource some of the content or all of
the content if you want and then you
don't have to spend so much time in the
details of the topic you can spend it on
the marketing and growth and the website
and link building all the other things
rather than the specific topic so for
myself I have the site that I'm into
it's her sorry the site that I'm working
on is a topic that I'm into in fact I
started it or at least the early stages
of it it was actually you know me doing
all the blogging and I was just learning
how to blog and another and a good part
about that of course is I understand the
topic I understand the niche really well
and I'm interested in it so I you know
if I'm just going through my normal
activities through the day I think of
blog posts that can work and they do
well another project that I'm working on
I'm less interested in the topic
specifically however I do have some
slightly related interest that's sort of
fit in so that's helpful however it's
not enough so when I try to create
content around the topic that I wasn't
so interested in it took a really long
time and it was boring I didn't enjoy it
and instead of writing content I now
focus on more of the marketing and
copywriting and everything else that's
not related to content ok back to niche
selection in general so the thing you
have to look for is especially when
you're looking at an affiliate type site
whether it's amazon or click
or some other affiliate you got to have
products to refer so I mean that's super
important you have to sell something and
if your if your site's not based on an
affiliate type arrangement that's no
problem then you should you know look at
other basically I had network so Adsense
is probably you know the the biggest
gateway into ad networks but there's
definitely others out there I'm not
really into those so I don't know their
names but they're easy enough to find if
you go check them out so to recap niche
selection make sure your kind of
interested make sure there's products to
sell or there's advertisers out there um
and you're probably thinking hey what
about keywords okay yeah good good idea
we'll get to that in a second but as far
as like getting some ideas in
brainstorming so for me I'm focused
mainly on Amazon type products or
products which you can get on Amazon so
just browse the things that are out
there obviously you get plenty of ideas
or you know thousands and thousands and
thousands of different products out
there on amazon also i mean just go to a
retail store and maybe you should go to
stores that you don't normally shop in
depends on what you know what country
you're in for the stores that are
popular but i'm in i'm in the US i'm in
montana and there are there's like an
rei it's an outdoor store there's a home
depot there's an office depot which is
just an office supply store there's
other outdoor stores Walmart so you can
go just walk around the store look at
the products there look at what other
people are looking at and that's a great
way to just get more ideas and
brainstorm you may not get your idea
directly from it but it gets the ideas
flowing which is really important it's
probably not going to be your very first
idea and it's a it's smart to brainstorm
list all your options don't exclude
anything yet once you get a huge list
then you can go and start
to get rid of the ones that don't look
Bible okay and yeah so people actually
need to be searching for the topic that
of course is based on the assumption
that we're looking at organic traffic
most likely from google so you got to
have the right keywords so same same
reader ask this question how do you
select correct keywords so again there's
an art to it people have different
approaches I'm you know I'm open to new
ideas I'll tell you a little bit about
how I look at keywords so two main
aspects so buyer intent and volume and
by your intent you know some people call
it buyers keywords and really these are
reviews of some kind where you're going
to be helping a reader figure out what
product by they're looking for some
information so i think i have a list of
several different keyword qualifiers
that you can use so i listed one here
like best and then like whatever the
keywords are those are good to look up
reviews some people say you know vacuum
cleaner reviews that's what they they
search for it because they're looking
for vacuum cleaner so those are
generally what I look for in addition if
you're looking for an ad space adsense
based website then the buyer intent is
slightly less important because you just
you want to make sure people are
advertising for it so in that case you
would pay attention to the CPC also just
as a note if you're looking at an Amazon
based site then the CPC doesn't really
matter too much you know I mean if
you're going to put adsense on the site
then sure it makes some difference and
the CPC is the cost per click and that's
what the advert i advertised are
actually pays google and then you
can assume you get something like yeah
sixty percent or seventy-five percent
per click per click that is ok so
keyword selection this depends so
there's a couple approaches keywords and
keyword volume right now for me i'm
looking at primary keywords that get
search volume greater than 7 20 a couple
years ago was looking at over 1500 or
2000 it turns out those are really
competitive so starting out or starting
a new website then i would probably look
at seven twenty or more um the secondary
keywords are ones that are related to it
these are actually the long tails and
for those i look for a volume of 02 like
300 or so really up to like 720 i guess
so i'm not going to exclude the ones
that are in the 300 to 720 range of
course but secondary keywords are you
know generally less than the primary is
really what we should note there these
are the long tails so they're not
searched as often and it turns out
there's a lot of long tails related it
turns out there's more long tails than
anything else when you look at the graph
with a long enough scale on there so if
you haven't read the book long tail
check that out it explains the whole
thing one more note on keyword selection
and that is there's a couple approaches
that you could take so the first one is
where you go for keyword volumes like
I've outlined here so you're sort of
looking for higher search volume the
other one is that where you look for
very low search volume so let's say I
only look for keywords that have a
search volume of like zero to say 200
and then I there's a lot of those right
so basically you create content around
those less search for terms however the
cool part is because the volume so low
not that many people
actually look for those keywords so the
competition is lower so you can actually
build a site based around key words that
get a pretty low search volume you just
have to make a lot of pages and write a
lot of content it turns out if you do
that you can actually get a lot of
traffic that way because of competitions
love for me i sort of i'm adopting a e i
guess a little bit of each so I have
some primary keywords with greater
search volume and then I've also picked
out some long tails that have low search
volume and you're quick to rank for and
as far as long tails I'm going to do a
little demo in a few minutes to just
show you how I find some long tails okay
so that is coming up here so I'm going
to have to switch windows here so it'll
take me just a moment while I'm moving
around and let's see all right I gotta
stop sharing and then I need to share
another window so thanks for being
patient alright so here's the other
window I think everyone should see it I
think we may have a couple other viewers
on here so i just want to remind you
that if you have any questions click on
the Q&A button you probably stand it
left hand side and then go over to that
window and you could ask your question
there okay so here's a quick little demo
nothing crazy you may have seen this
before but I sort of didn't pay much
attention to it until recently when I
started going after these pretty long
tail keywords okay so let's say we're
looking for vacuum cleaner reviews so
you type it in one thing you notice is
we
have several related terms so you could
actually like note that as well um one
cool thing you can do is if you type in
your search term and then what the
autosuggest pop in there's a lot of
things that you can you can see they
actually tell you about what people are
searching for so another one maybe best
vacuum cleaner so here they've given us
a few ideas already so okay let's just
do that search best vacuum cleaner and
we can see I have it set for oh I guess
not in this case so we have 10 results
here we see there's a lot of there's a
few these are big sites that's a big
term so we probably wouldn't go after
that one just because it's so darn
competitive however they do tell us
searches related to the best vacuum
cleaner in which we are interested in so
what I'd like to do is just copy those
so I'm going to right click and copy and
then I have the google keyword planner
open here and it's a free tool so if you
go to Adwords and then I ya ghous
AdWords that google com and then the
keyword planner it looks like they make
you think that you may have a that you
may have to pay for it but you don't you
may have to create an account but it
doesn't cost you anything so if you
haven't done that go for this is a free
tool so it's I have other tools that I
use however this is fast and it's always
up to date and you don't have to worry
about it so I copy and paste and stuff
over and all those are in the in the I
guess the search field what I want to
search for and we'll just put the
original 12 best vacuum cleaner I'm not
going to put any
the filters on but you can filter for
the average monthly searches suggested
bid that's the CPC and that information
you can also put in words that you don't
want to show up so I don't have any 11
he right now to offer but for some
reason if you notice there was a some
keyword or some word that ended up
showing up then you could enter it here
if you didn't want to see it in addition
you can include only the keywords that
have certain terms so if I was own if I
was looking for say all the keywords
that had best in it I could enter best
right here and save it and then it would
only show me those and if we filter on
everything else so we'll do that yet
let's just see what it gives us so I've
entered in quick recap so I entered in a
search term I went down to searches
related to that search term so these are
things that Google knows people are
searching for related to it and then I
entered him here so I can figure out the
keyword volume so once you enter it you
can just click get ideas it takes like
two seconds or so and then it gives us
you know all these different keyword
groups here so there's pet vacuum vacuum
reviews Dyson which is a brand vacuums
for hardwood shark vacuum cordless so on
and so forth for this exercise we're
just going to look at the keyword ideas
right here and we can see these specific
keywords that we entered and those are
the ones that were suggested to us by
Google so in this case so I'm going to
get a drink here I usually don't talk
this much alright so in this case here
our original term gets like 22,000
searches but the other ones here are
great secondary keywords some have a
large enough volume you can build a
whole web
side around so one thing I didn't
mention before is with a keyword
research and the products you're looking
at the niche you want to make sure that
there's enough money in it so basically
if you say build a website about wooden
pencils and mechanical pencils and pens
and stuff like that well it turns out
generally pencils are not very expensive
so even if you sold you know thousands
and thousands of pencils it's probably
not worth that much money however in
this case vacuum cleaners are kind of
expensive usually they're you know more
than fifty dollars and most of the time
they're over 100 if you get a really
good one they're a couple hundred
dollars so this is a great sort of niche
to get into and if you look at these I
mean it turns out if you you know if you
build a website about vacuum cleaners
for hardwood floors for example those
are expensive 720 average monthly
searches per day so some of the math you
you may go through your head is okay so
that's what like 20 people a day 25
people a day searching for searching for
that term and if you're ranking number
one then you can assume you're getting
you know something like seventy five
percent of the traffic for that term so
you know based on that plus all the long
tails too so um even if my math my my
crude and rough math is off here you
could assume you're getting a handful of
visitors per day that are super
interested in finding the best vacuum
cleaner for hardwood floors and if you
could rank for that term and you can
provide some information on your website
and then guide them over to Amazon or
whoever you have an affiliate
relationship with then you can earn a
commission for that so the let's do a
quick recap so I had some search term
which I was interested in
I looked at it here and then I went down
to search searches related to the one I
just did best vacuum cleaner it spit out
a handful of suggested terms and I then
went over to the Google Keyword planter
planar I entered those terms in and got
the ideas now you're probably thinking
hey I could just do that again so let's
look at since I was talking about
hardwood floors why don't we just do
that so um make sure everything's right
here okay so we have best vacuum for
hardwood floors we have the results
there and just like you imagined there
are even more suggested terms there now
some of them are not so good some of
them are a specific brand some of them
are Bed Bath & Beyond that's not very
