all right hey what's up it's Doug
Pennington here I'm gonna talk about the
keyword golden ratio and go into some of
the details of the formula I do get a
lot of questions about the formula and
why certain things are the way they are
so I will talk about it today and I
didn't share this link to Facebook or
other areas yet so I'm gonna do it right
now and while I'm doing that I'm gonna
try and talk at the same time I will
tell you that the key word golden ratio
if you're unfamiliar with it at all it's
gonna blow your mind
first and the thing I can tell you about
it is it's a data a different way to
find low competition keywords it's fully
manual and there's no real good way to
automate it there's just not a good way
to automate it at all and that is a good
thing because basically if there's
something that can be exploited through
a tool then it can be abused and people
will abuse it and next thing you know
it's not going to be effective anymore
general so I do see that we have a few
people in and they're watching so cool
I see Wesley I see Nick what's up and if
you're new to the channel and you just
started watching recently thanks for
joining
let me know in the chat I'm interested
to hear you know if there were new
people I just want to give you a shout
out say thanks and basically get into
the keyword golden ratio I'm gonna
describe the formula I should have I
should have like wrote it on a piece of
paper so I could hold up but it's
basically on a specific ratio and I've
videos about I'm probably gonna do more
videos just so there's more material
about it but in essence the key word
golden ratio is the all-in title results
so all in title is an advanced Google
search like command so you type in all
in title colon then whatever your search
string is and then you divide that by
the search
I am the local monthly search volume
sometimes people call it an LMS so you
take the all in title results divided by
the LMS and then you get some number and
you want that number that ratio to be
0.25 or less that is in the golden ratio
area and the key thing and one of the
things I'm going to talk about today is
the LMS needs to be the local monthly
searches needs to be less than 250 I get
the question all the time people you
know they say hey I found this great
keyword golden ratio term it gets 10,000
searches and I tell them that that's not
really gonna work out how they think it
is and they need to you know make sure
the local monthly searches are under 250
okay I see Tom's on awesome thank you
for joining up cats on Dennis world
travels which is Steph and then Sarah
from Tasmania awesome thanks for joining
and Nick says one site that you have has
zero backlinks and like it's one month
old and you did a kgr and it appeared on
page 2 for eternity gets 50 searches per
month it works it's it's amazing that it
works and I should probably stop telling
people about it so by the way in the
chat let me know are there other people
that have used the keyword golden ratio
just say hey yeah I've used it and it
was awesome or I used the keyword golden
ratio and the stock that didn't work
whatever let me know about that as well
okay so the main idea with the keyword
golden ratio is that it shows you sort
of a supply and demand on the internet
or at least in Google's index of like
what's out there that's the whole title
and then it tells you the demand which
is the local monthly searches and if you
know the supply and demand then you can
make a decision based on the ratio that
you get and one of the reasons we look
at 0.25 or less
is because the sheer number of results
is smaller so we'll look at the specific
numbers so it's like really clear what
I'm talking about and let's see so
Wesley says I you haven't done any key
word golden ratio post yet but you will
shortly so let me know what happens when
you do and then Steph on from world
travel you're trying to but you haven't
published an article yet and okay so
Nick is saying I don't think it has to
be exactly 250 but yeah roughly 4 to 500
is where you'll get into more
competition you've been the 0.25 ratio
of it okay so like this and I'm probably
gonna make a whole other video after I
clean up my thoughts I mean this is
actually super helpful for me to hear
what people are saying so a few things
right off the bat first it's a ratio and
it's data-driven and I have to provide a
formula the formula must be rigid and
the numbers that I give are Ricky 22:5
LMS of 250 that's the formula right
stick with the formula however you know
you know in an art and as a musician
there are many different forms but you
have to learn the rules before you could
break them nick is starting to
understand the rules pretty well he
knows when to break them so here's the
reality about the keyword tools keyword
research tools that are out there even
if you're getting data from Google
they're all estimates right so if you
actually look at the data that Google
provides if you're in AdWords or if you
have some ability to see the actual
monthly searches like you get the
average monthly searches across the year
there are peaks and troughs in the
service volume that's just the way it is
I mean things are seasonal people are
you know looking for Christmas
decorations around the holidays but
they're not looking for them
right now so the point is any data that
you get on the keyword search volume is
an estimate it's not exact always no
matter where you're getting the data is
just an estimate so that that's one
factor that is a big factor people you
know people take data that they get from
a tool as like the truth and it's just
the best guess that you know whatever
tool has at the top so that's number one
the second part is only actually look at
the data and we actually look at them
like the sheer numbers so let's plug in
some numbers let's say let's let's stick
with the formula let's say the local
monthly search volume the LMS is 250 so
that's right at the max and we're gonna
do some math so it's always scary to do
math in my head live with a bunch of
people watching but I'm gonna try so
we're aiming for a kgr of 0.25 so that
also is the max 0.25 and then we have
the local monthly searches of 250 and we
look at you know 25 percent of 250 we
end up with like now now my math is is
family so I'm just gonna I'm gonna type
it out so it's 250 and the actual amount
that we're giving and then make it easy
so we're looking at about 62 results for
the all in title search right so that
means if we are targeting a specific
term and we are at the max of 250 and
0.25 there are only like 60 or so
competitors who are actually targeting
that so if we just do a little bit
better job than maybe we should rank at
least in the top 62 if we're generous
maybe it's the top hundred okay but
still that's normally a lot better than
you know you published I mean when I
first started making Mitch sites I
published stuff it didn't rank in the
top 250 like ever like it never ranked
so that is obviously not helpful so and
pre Tom what's up and let's see D card
Thank You Preet I'm asked a question by
the way feel free to ask questions now
we're gonna try and keep these sessions
tight so go ahead and ask your questions
as you think of them and I'll go through
the queue and answer them at the end and
Q doc thanks for the help on the math I
thought I was gonna guess it I mean I
can do the math in my head but you know
as soon as you start plugging in numbers
I get nervous okay so the whole point
here is if you plug in the max that you
can reach with the ratio when the actual
formula 0.25 and then LM s of 250 or
less you're dealing with a small number
of results about 60 let's say we bump it
up to a thousand so if we have a
thousand local monthly searches and we
go for a ratio of 0.25 that's 250 other
pages on the internet that are trying to
rank for it
so obviously it's more competitive by a
decent factor now let's go one step
further right let's go up to 10,000
let's say it's 10,000 searches per month
you find something that meets the
keyword golden ratio when you plug in
the numbers there you end up with 2500
pages to compete with that's a lot of
pages to compete with and the power of
the keyword golden ratio falls apart now
a lot of people are probably thinking
well I don't want to go after terms that
have a search volume of under 250 I want
to go after something that's more
profitable basically you can make more
money than you think with a lower volume
keywords the other thing is I can
respect someone you know I can respect
the fact that people want to let go
after higher competition keywords I
would say if you're a beginner if you
haven't had a site making you know a
thousand bucks a month there's some
threshold or if you're not getting like
enough traffic on your site I would say
you probably should start smaller
because the thing is you can compete
with bigger sites that are going after
local monthly searches like 10,000 or
12,000 or 18,000 or whatever but that
will take you more time and it will take
you more effort I think the biggest
trend that I've ever ranked as far as
the search volume with a partner my
buddy Luis could good friend of mine
Luis and I were working on a site and I
think it was like an 18,000 searches per
month term and we ranked number one for
it for quite a long time and once we you
know stopped pushing it it dropped you
know within a year dropped down to like
number five so the other thing is when
you go after higher competition keywords
there's literally by definition more
competition so that that is something to
think about there so overall you have to
stick with local monthly searches under
250 because the math tells us that
there's too much competition if you go
beyond that is it a line in the sand is
it black and white no these are all
estimates so maybe you can go up to 800
searches per month and maybe you can go
up to you know 0.75 is the ratio I don't
know it depends on your niche it depends
on how strong your site is I can tell
you I'm not sticking to the ratio
exactly as it stands I have a new
sliding scale that I'm developing and
going to be testing over the next year
and it's based on you know some
observational data and I don't have any
data yet
like my implementation of it okay um I
see there's like a lots of good stuff
going on in the chat by the way I see we
got a handful of people on which is
awesome if you have a second please
click the thumbs up like the thumbs up
underneath that says like I like this or
whatever just so other people could find
the video and if you're watching this
not live if you're watching the recorded
version you get asked questions and the
comments I'll answer as many as I can
and you know give it a thumbs up I
appreciate it okay pre tom says the
easiest way to find keyword golden ratio
keywords okay that's a tough one
everyone's a little different for me I
just like to start looking at
autosuggest
that Google gives me based on keywords
that I'm just typing in and I just kind
of it's a real sloppy method but I type
them in see what autosuggest tells me
and then I look at some of those and
then I look at the related searches at
the bottom so there's no like fast way
to do it there's no magic bullet here it
is a sloppy manual process there's not a
good way to automate it I know there are
there are some tools which you can try
to automate it but there's a lot of
overhead to actually set that stuff up a
lot of cases it's better just to like
train someone to train to be a higher
researcher on up work or whatever and
just showing the process show them how
to do it show in my videos and then have
them look it up I mean that there's no
short wait no shortcut to do it that is
why it works - again if we had a tool
that would just spit out hundreds of
keyword golden ratio
you know compliant keywords the
effectiveness would go - and there's a
lot there's a lot of us trying to do
this and it takes a while to do it and
by the way if I just gave someone a
bunch of keyword golden ratio terms you
still have to you know have that stuff
written
and you still have to publish it in that
part is tough to do so okay John what's
up thanks for joining
Nick says sometimes I'll get six to ten
results for all in title and out of
those there's not even one relevant to
the search term leaving you like one or
two sites to beat out that's awesome
that is what I see - okay Paul says you
found a keyword that 5400 searches per
month in a very low kgr does the kgr not
apply to higher search volumes no not
really
then you have to default to just look at
the top 10 top 20 results see like what
you're up against
because at that point I mean you you
have a lot that's like 1200 ish like
1300 other competitors are dealing with
this more than that but I mean there's a
lot of people to compete with there so
unless
oh sorry you did say I'm sorry you gave
me the question I was about to ask there
are only 50 all in title results so I
mean there's no harm and going for it
the awesome thing with the keyword
golden ratio is you usually rank within
like a few hours of your page being
indexed like in the top 30 now for that
term maybe you ranked in the top 100 or
the top 200 so it's not a bad thing it
doesn't mean don't go for it it just
means you're not gonna be ranking the
top 10 most likely it could happen but
probably not it means you'll probably
need to get some backlinks to it soon
that's it doesn't mean don't go after it
it just means the formula like all the
claims that I make about the keyword
golden ratio not gonna hold up okay
QDR says hey I haven't practiced this
formula yet but you can see it working
you've written a kgr esq post and get a
few people to your site every week your
website is two months old
totally by accident cool yeah yeah
that is very cool and then Nick mentions
to Paul it depends which is always a
great answer for something with that
volume Google will start to pull and
results from the other similar keywords
to fill in yep you got it so basically
you know the formula doesn't hold up as
well overall when you go to higher
search volumes plus you have so many
more people competing with you as I
mentioned before when you know I had a
site ranking for like an 18,000 LMS I
mean that there were people trying to
rank and they were getting more links
and they were doing things to try to
beat us and they did eventually because
we stopped working on it it wasn't a
very commercially viable type turn so
that's why we didn't really care okay
g-dog says I know some keyword research
tools have a question finder feature
which can help you find correct keywords
cool thanks for that each case sure
should have its own article this is a
question by Paul yeah that's right what
what if there are two keywords that are
related which have low kg R's the answer
still stands you have published them
separately unless they are like
literally serving the same visitor nick
says okay yeah q doc says you would -
Isaac is your article or content like
you would any other keyword true and
yeah so related searches this is for
getting ideas related searches getting
creative lots of testing instead of some
rush you can also use keywords
everywhere I use keywords everywhere
it's super helpful okay yeah John says
for my best guess if you were all
hundred articles if you wrote a hundred
all in title articles how many would
eventually rank on the first
Paige yeah so Nick is Nick that you're
exactly right so I think about 80% would
probably be on the first page it does
depend on the niche the more you know
information that I get from readers that
are testing it out like if if it happens
to be a niche that is in say the medical
or health field like you may not be able
to beat out like WebMD like there's some
stuff like that and by the way there's
like ten other sites that are like WebMD
so you may not be able to crack it if
you are up against like super
authoritative sites but generally ten
percent are just not gonna like ten to
twenty percent are not going to do that
well they just won't perform and then
the rest are gonna probably rank
eventually so and University of
WordPress cool welcome I didn't see your
question before but thanks to Nick for
answering that yeah so Paul says have
you tracked your keyword rankings a
usurp lab and apparently you can get
fifty keywords to track in the free camp
which is cool I pay like six or ten
bucks a month or something and I can
track like I don't know 800 keywords or
something more than I need to so
basically you know once you hit a point
where you're making you know enough cash
Paul you can go ahead and cough up a few
bucks a month and pay for that service
in world travel says do you mean give
the kgr article its own page and then a
lot of WordPress themes seem to hat
sorry a lot of WordPress themes seem to
have several articles on a page or is
that opposed so basically yeah publish
everything in a post or page whatever
you're doing on
site I usually do post but there's no
like right way to do it but yeah each
kgr term gets its own okay last couple
questions here so just if you have them
type them in now it only it's from super
fast Steph asks can you explain the
difference between posts and pages do we
make each kgr article a post or a page
basically posts and pages are just a
like an entity thing within site like
inside WordPress and typically if it's
something like more permanent it would
be like a page like your about page your
privacy policy page your contact page or
maybe you have like a really awesome guy
that is sort of permanent and you would
make it a you know blah blah blah guide
on a page it doesn't matter a ton you
usually it's like how your theme
interacts with pages versus posts I
usually publish most everything except
the things I just mentioned as a post so
there are better definitions I'm not a
wordpress guy it doesn't actually matter
a ton but I typically do post and yeah
Nick is right we're talking about making
each kgr article its own post and I
think you know again like Nick mentions
a page is much different than a post and
then I think well I'm basically ignorant
on the actual interworkings
but in general I know like you can't
convert a page to a post and vice versa
all that stuff like you can just you
know get a plug-in convert the
converting back and forth so if you if
you set them up differently like that's
okay you can catch up later but it also
has to do with like the data that is
inherent for like a post versus a page
so like a page can have a
parent-child relationship and a
hierarchy for like it's yes that's
that's it it can have a hierarchy a post
can be placed in categories or tagged
but really it like just depends on like
how your your theme deals with it you
can actually set it up so that like both
of them would look exactly the same so
it just depends and it doesn't matter
much yeah Qi says it doesn't matter
about posts or pages Google finds them
both
of course yeah yeah for sure and posts
are easier to manage in to Doc's
perspective they're so cool I think
we're all set
that is oh and Dennis did mention four
pages Dennis has about contact and
policies pages and articles reviews as
post that's what he does that's exactly
what I do
and then Steven what's up haven't talked
to you in a while but yeah I'm doing
live streams most days although just
quick bit of news I'm gonna step that
down I'm actually gonna do live streams
only twice a week coming up but I'm
gonna be trying to publish like
something new but I'm trying to do it
five times a day there's a day five
times a week sorry once a day once a day
but we will see how it goes i think you
know i was talking to my mastermind
group this morning and i think like i do
really well to like do sprints of work
what you talk about all the time the
rest of the time I'm scattered I'm like
distracted and not sure what to work on
just like everyone else but like when I
focus in like for for content like I
think I may schedule out content until
like mid-october and have everything
like you know there's a lot of work to
be done of course but I know exactly
what to work on you know exactly when it
needs to be done and if I can ramp that
up that's good
so cool cool cool all right I'm out of
here
thanks everyone thanks Steven and Q dog
and the rest of the crew will see you on
tomorrow tomorrow will be Q&A so do
yourself a favor
hop on the stream just a couple minutes
early type in your questions in the chat
I know pre time did that the other day
and it'll be really cool to have like a
queue of questions just to work through
otherwise I'll just you know ad-lib and
tell stories that are unrelated to
anything you want or not so okay cool
we'll see you tomorro
