all right hello stuck Huntington here
welcome and you're here for the webinar
on the SEO plan for niche site to see we
do have a couple people on I think some
familiar faces at least a couple hey Leo
what's up I see mark is on Sean and
other Sean spelled different ways as
cool and a Wendell so we have a few
folks on as always at the beginning of a
webinar one should make sure that people
can hear you
so can you hear me and you could just
let me know in the chat just say hey I
could hear you and I think this is
actually going to be a pretty intimate
group here so you can let me know in the
chat where you're from and actually you
could let me know if you have like a
niche site that you already have out
there if you're just looking to learn a
little bit more about niche sites or
kind of where you're at um and I'll
explain a little bit more okay Sean says
that you can hear me that's fantastic so
um yeah and I'll explain a little bit
more why it's going to be a small crew
today which will be cool you know maybe
there'll be more questions where you can
ask more questions if you want um and
that sort of thing so in funny stories
so this particular topic that we're
going to go over today SEO plan for
niche sites I did a very similar in fact
we're going to be working um basically
off the same presentation as as the last
time but basically no one could hear me
right no one could hear me for like 20
minutes but a lot of people stuck around
until that presentation was done but
essentially um yeah we're gonna do it
again overall so if you weren't here the
last time you may recognize the
presentation and you know we're doing it
a different time of day today so
hopefully that doesn't scare anyone off
but like I said if you want to mention
where
you're from in the chat and sort of your
experience level level with niche sites
that'll be super helpful and going
through the presentation today so let's
see a couple you know why hang on a
couple moments before we get started
just to give people a few minutes to
join up since we're only three three
minutes after the hour window welcome
from Canada thank you so I've been doing
webinars for the last several weeks
row or so I think I may have missed one
but I think I was sick or something like
that I have a good excuse but anyhow the
point is been doing these webinars
pretty often and I've been trying and
internet pitch but by the way like I'm
not going to try and sell you anything
after this even though the SEO claim for
niche sites that's really ripe for me to
try and push some affiliate products but
not today
um I'll spare you that for now but the
point is I've been advertising actually
I've just been min I'm not actually
running ads to get people to sign up for
these webinars I'm just you know
participating in some Facebook groups um
which I'm not like hugely active and
I'll just pop in every once in a while
but I have a good relationship with the
admins and owners of those groups so I'm
sharing it in those groups in previous
webinars right I would actually send it
out to my email list to let them know
about it but since this is sort of a
repeat of a different webinar at least
the same sort of content you know every
webinar is a little different because of
the presenters and you know how much
time I have and like I said the last one
was kind of a disaster so I kind of sped
through all the material so the point is
I didn't really mention this one in as
many groups as I normally do and then I
didn't send it out to my email list I
just put it on my web
so I expect that you know there's going
to be way fewer people and I could
definitely see there's far fewer that
have actually signed up today which is
interesting so it's good to test then
there's a couple other tweaks that I did
as well but any op um you could also let
me know if you're familiar with niche
site project and then I'll go ahead and
get started with the presentation in
just a moment so I'm going to stop
sharing my video and then I'll share my
screen take just a second for us to get
rolling
displaying a present error sorry a a
website this is actually a guest post
that I did with Empire flippers earlier
this week so if you haven't taken a look
at it do have a look after the call if
you have a moment it's over let's see I
can keyboard has stopped working on me
here so always makes it exciting let's
see what we can do okay I think that
make it work that time okay so if you
have a chance later you can take a look
at this page here I think it went pretty
well quite a few comments on there and
we can get into the presentation now
like I said I'm duck Huntington and I'm
the founder of niche like project and
people can hear me so that's really good
so I put this quote in here as a bit of
a reminder so all generals
generalizations or faults including this
one by Mark Twain and you know a lot of
a lot of what is presented in this deck
here it's it's really generalized right
so I hit the tip of the iceberg for most
of the most topics really so going to
say the most effective topics are you
know they could have a whole course
dedicated to them so you know some of
the more simple simple techniques don't
have nearly as many nuances but the
really effective ones do so like I said
you know there's a lot of
generalizations in here and hopefully
it'll at least give you somewhere else
to look
if you need to okay so I guess I'm duck
huntin the founder of niche site project
that's my dad died in Yellowstone which
is actually only now hour and a half and
Old Faithful is
like two two and a half hours from where
I live so pretty crazy I didn't actually
go to Yellowstone until I was in my I
guess it was about 20 but to get there
you know it's like 2030 hour drive I
can't quite remember but it's quite a
road trip from Georgia but now I live in
Montana so it's a lot closer so just you
know why should you listen to me do you
have a past track record with niche
sites I've coached dozens of other other
people to you know start and optimize
their own sites I've done quite a bit of
guest blogging talking about you know my
experience with niche sites and project
management and actually have a PMP
certification that's project management
professional and I did software project
management for about ten years in the
corporate world for you know management
consulting companies and a software
company so it's an interesting mix of
experience I've been featured on a few
places most notably socialtriggers Neil
Patel backlinko Charles flow and some
other blogs and podcasts in the past I
do throw this in this timeline into each
of the presentations just as a reminder
right it's good for me and it's good for
people to see that um you know this is
sort of a long journey it's a roller
coaster ride you can see the the you
know the peaks and troughs here there's
some you know quick success that you can
get and you know a lot of times what
that leads to is some sort of a Google
penalty or some other sort of issue um
and making sort of week it gained your
footing and then you know lose momentum
again of it eventually I got laid off
for my job after working there for nine
years so at the same company so it's not
as secure as it feels um and then you
know that gave me a lot more time to
work on niche sites
and things are going pretty well at this
point so last little point here's
December my wife actually got laid off
and coincidentally she started a new job
this week so that's kind of cool um but
as we go go through you know there's
another little dip that I need to add on
here because Amazon changed their
affiliate Commission structure so that's
always you know something you have to
deal with the affiliates can you're
sorry the affiliate program can change
you don't control that so obviously
working with Amazon it's quite secure in
many ways Amazon's Akana
you know just disappear and have a
pretty strong relationship with their
associates um but they do have quite a
bit of leverage so if they change their
payout structure there's not much we can
do about it and it turns out you know at
least for me there's not many other
places to turn where it would actually
be more profitable so that's a whole
other story but the point is you know
niche sites are long term
sort of project that you can work on and
you know I've had the ups and downs so
I've learned a couple things along the
way I will mention um you know I usually
hold the QA pretty tight towards the end
but since there's only a handful of
people on feel free to ask as we go I'll
get to the questions you know if it's if
I happen to look over and see it just at
the right time I will go ahead and
answer it as we go and if there's
something in here by the way that's
confusing or does it quite make sense
you know just ask the question if you
have it then that means you know other
people probably do too right so I
usually put a little section in like
this wine niche sites and by the way um
like does anyone have like a niche site
right now already if so is it profitable
I do try to you know tailor the
presentation and what I mentioned and
what I spend time on based on your who
attending so if you if you do want to
mention that I would appreciate it and
you know I'd be able to tailor this
presentation a little bit better I know
there's a delay so I'll just pause for a
moment um okay so why niche sites
overall I believe niche sites are the
the best way to get started online so
you can essentially for a couple hundred
bucks launched a brand new niche site
that you know you have to pay for
hosting that's where the money would go
to hosting and probably a premium theme
and essentially um you could launch a
site that could earn you a full time
income you know it'll take time it'll
take a lot of work and if you want to do
it a little faster you may need to
invest more than two hundred dollars you
may have to you know accelerate the
process by adding more content and more
quickly you could however write it out
yourself if you wanted to you know if
you're a professional writer you could
pull it off and essentially you know I
got started with niche sites originally
I worked with absent sites and it didn't
really work out that well for me but it
showed me the ropes and I learned some
core skills that I was able to transfer
over to Amazon affiliate sites and I've
stuck there um
I actually believe you know the
perseverance and I guess gripped if I
can be so bold as to say grit to stick
with it and then each time I made a
mistake I learned something from it some
of them were very costly mistakes others
were just silly and overall you know
it's helped me you make make my money
from niche sites and teach other people
how to do it too um so like I said you
could learn lots of stuff along the way
you don't want to make mistakes per se
but if you made make mistakes you can
learn a lot you can learn you know just
standalone skills that are useful like
SEO like
that's applicable to almost any business
especially you know smaller businesses
if you're working in a big corporation
and you're say a project manager you may
not need to know SEO specifically but
knowing the you know the background of
it is definitely helpful you learn about
you know setting out websites WordPress
I didn't know anything about WordPress
when I got started
learn about domains and your DNS and you
know other hosting aspects and just a
bunch of other stuff so it's a great way
to learn lots of stuff um so we'll get
into it the SEO plan for niche sites and
I see window ask the question um so when
does question is are you diversifying
your monetization in the future because
of Amazon's new structure no I'm not so
I can give you a little more information
so the thing is um Amazon's payout
structure um was hot it was high um it
was like higher than the competition so
if you look at say like Walmart their
affiliate program roughly pays out what
Amazon's new Commission structure does
um additionally I have shopped around it
depends on the niche by the way so I
have shopped around quite a bit
um and looked at other affiliate
programs within my niche and there are
some you know decent decent programs out
there but the thing is um you know they
the ones I saw paid out between like
five percent right which is not much
better than and you know not arbitrary
you know average on Amazon so five
percent to about fifteen percent I think
is what I saw the thing is um people buy
so much other stuff on Amazon that
there's no way possible that I can make
up the volume of purchases so it turns
out for me um through you know some
analysis of the data and looking at you
know a year's worth of data I can see
it's not going to be more profitable
even
I went to say
affiliate program that paid out 15% the
math just doesn't work out so for me um
diversifying doesn't necessarily make
sense it just makes me you know look at
you know optimizing what I have I have a
very solid command of traffic so it's a
matter of me you know getting more
people over to Amazon or increasing or
rather and increasing the traffic so a
good question Wendell um and I think you
know most of the people that I actually
I only have a small set that I have like
really good insight into um but in my
mastermind group
everybody's doing over five figures a
month some over 20k over 30k in
essentially know they're looking for
some other programs maybe for one-off
products and stuff like that but for the
most part they're just looking to
optimize what they already have okay so
I do mention this link building is a
game of incremental gains so one percent
per day adds up over time yeah so uh if
you could actually get a one percent
gain that would be really good it's
actually harder than that but the point
is each little thing that you do can
help and you're probably not going to be
able to do everything super fast right
this stuff takes time and in you know
2017 it takes a lot longer than it did
and you know 2013 or 2007 it was the
Wild West
recess my understanding I wasn't around
doing the stuff back then okay so here
is the overview six main steps social
profiles internal linking with silos and
I'll explain a little bit more about you
know actually using silos we're not
using silos blog commenting guest
posting web 2.0 blogs and private blog
networks I will mention the two last
techniques the web 2.0 blogs and the pp
ends there they are effective they work
wonderfully I don't use them because it
does introduce more risk which I'm not
interested in risk I like I mentioned
before I'm sort of looking at a longer
timeline at this point when you have a
longer timeline you can make other
decisions that I guess have longevity in
mind versus speed so if you if you look
a little bit further out you're going to
have an advantage over people that are
trying to do things fast they will cut
corners and you'll be able to again if
you have a long enough timeline you'll
be able to come out on top or at least
you know good enough okay so first off
social profiles these are great because
you can essentially create them as fast
as you want um here are some of the high
I guess the top of my list is a better
way to put it so you know these are just
sort of arbitrarily chosen
I guess the ones on the on the Left are
kind of the ones I would definitely do
probably LinkedIn also Pinterest but you
know depending on what the niches you
may actually go to other social profiles
the key here is to you know make sure
you link back to your website
I actually remember an early um coaching
student of mine from a couple years ago
you know she she created the social
profiles but she actually neglected to
you know put a link for her domain in
there and that's the idea right you want
to have the domain in the account and
then the profile so that it's actually a
link back to your site yes it is a
nofollow link however it does show some
presence online and you know at some
point if you wanted to become active in
whatever social uh socially Caleb I'm
I'm drawing a blank on the word it's
been a little bit of a long day but um
the social network the network right so
you can go to the network and become
active on say Facebook and build a
Facebook group or you know just connect
with people on Twitter and use it as a
networking opportunity but overall you
know you don't have to hold yourself to
that in fact I am NOT a big fan of
social media and I'm like withdrawing
more and more from social media as I
realize it's either a distraction
you know if I'm if I'm trying to
actually do some work on Facebook I will
often get pulled away and instead of
looking at you know silly videos that
are not helping me reach my goal so I'm
not a huge fan of social media in
general but they are useful for certain
things in this case you can get nofollow
backlink again it's totally natural to
create as many profiles as you want if
you imagine a small business or big
business they could set up all these
accounts on one day you know so it's no
big deal to set all these up at one time
and it's sort of the core foundation so
right I start you know set up the
website you know get things settled over
on the hosting side and start creating
the social profiles um so like I said be
sure you add your link in the profile
and other than that you know just
remember you don't have to be active
there you can just have the link there
and just have the presence it'll come
into play later just to add authenticity
around your site so it looks like an
actual site um when you ask for guest
post which is step four I think okay
internal linking with silos so I do
mention silos specifically and I even
have a picture of grey
silo's there to drive the point home but
one doesn't necessarily have to do this
tight silo structure I will mention some
of the good benefits that you do get
with a silo so you control those links
100% right and you control the relevancy
because well after all it's on your site
so it should be relevant to the niche in
the topic in general um the sort of
downside right with a very tight silo
structure is that you kind of have to
architect the whole site ahead of time
so you have to have a good understanding
of the content that you um like you have
on your site you will have on your site
and like anything that you may may plan
in the future you kind of have to like
imagine what you could do so yeah the
thing is it's hard to do right and I
have seen a friend of mine this has been
a couple years ago but right when he and
I were getting into silos she um was
basically following the silo structure
by the book
right and she ended up having a URL that
was like I think four or five like
layers deep right so it was like topic 1
subtopic 1 / sub sub topic 1 / sub sub
topic 1 slush so you get the point
it was really long and like at the end
of the day the actual like URL was you
know super long like 100 I mean you
couldn't even tweet it right it was so
long
you couldn't even tweet it and the thing
is it the actual article didn't even
line up anymore to what the original
topic was so he's sort of like lost
touch with what was important there and
in that way it's kind of I mean in most
cases I wouldn't go more than like two
layers like this and then
honestly I've moved away from this tight
structure so I'll do I may do a couple
silos on my site you know if I know that
I want to have a certain section with a
specific number of these subtopics but
most of the time I will actually just
post a post up and then I'll go and just
intranet to site very deliberately it
opened these sort of illustrating the
silos by the way so in this case you
know this is your home root domain and
then topic 1 and topic 2 & 3 are like a
line to the first layer here and these
are pages right so these are pages and
these are all pages - and the thing is
this is the parent and these are the
children here of topic 1 and these
subtopics here are the children of topic
2 and so on so that's something that you
can select you know within your
WordPress page editing screen and you're
able to select you know what is the
parent of a particular page and you can
layer this very deep I don't know what
the limit is but it is very very big
right more layers and you want to have
and that's how my friend got into a
little trouble now the thing is when you
do the silo structure you deliberately
link you remember a minute ago I
mentioned your your linking in a very
specific way so these pages up here link
down to all the subtopics and vice versa
right there link back up here so what
you end up with is you know this topic
page here ends up super relevant to the
the subtopic and the topic and that's a
very good thing to have additionally on
these parents pages these are sort of
the top-level pay
they link to each other and then they
link to the home page - so you can see
there's you know arrows going back and
forth indicating the links and
everything's interlinked and you know
sometimes you could even have a subtopic
from one topic going over to its uncle
or aunt whatever you want to call it but
it's the the parents you know brother or
sister over here so it could link up
here and of course if it's relevant you
could link across these layers as well
the thing is um when you go to the post
structure and you're just posting post
instead of a page if you just enter link
with this sort of methodology you end up
with the same result at least for my you
know experience with a few sites it
works out quite well and you don't have
to actually play in the side out as much
okay Wendell asks why our pages and
child are let's see why pages and child
pages in a comparison to category and
subcategory um so the okay so full
disclosure right so um I'm not a hundred
percent sure because I haven't worked
with categories and subcategories so
much um what I do know is a category
page and subcategory page in WordPress I
think it depends on your theme and
certain themes may or may not actually
display the content um you could end up
with you know content plus the links
that you want um sort of out to the
other pepper a yeah I guess post within
the category and or subcategory
but overall pages um essentially I don't
know if they give you tighter control
but the guest the end result is more
predictable and not dependent on the
theme again I will emphasize I've never
tried it with a category and subcategory
I don't I don't think it work in the
same way um part of it is a I did a
tremendous amount of research when I
wrote this post here so if you want to
read more about it you can check out
WordPress - silos on my site um but
essentially I don't think it'll work
because people would have said that that
was an option when I was doing my
research um I will also say I know that
Charles float has looked at it a little
bit and I don't think these same
benefits can be gained like they used to
be for you know having a silo structure
with pages like this you know um I think
you get most of the gained with the with
the thoughtful interlinking of your site
and really being obsessive about it
right so we only I'm only listing a few
of these links here but um you can
basically go crazy and just link all
over the place where is relevant of
course but that sort of interlinking is
a really good thing okay and window if
you have a follow up just let me know
Leo asked when you use the silo
structure with the topic one page would
it be content page or would it be more
of a list page with summaries and links
to these sub topic pages okay that's a
really good question in most cases what
I've done it okay in most cases but I've
done it it was indeed a Content page and
it had you know five thousand boards and
within those five thousand words there
would be you know links to the other sub
topic pages some people do have more of
a list page but at that point you're
giving up a bit of
you know some of the advantage that you
have by creating a site like this so
when you link all these posts or sorry
all these child pages up to the parent
page here you end up you know passing I
mean that's like five super relevant
links going up here sure that's like a
reciprocal link but I mean the point is
like you're adding relevancy about that
topic and that's a good thing so I think
that answers your question Leah so for
me I do the content because why not
you know and it may be um I'm looking at
my desk for examples I have some pilot
like roller ball pens here so you know
if you have if this was like g2 pen
right here um you know these may be
different colors so all of a sudden you
get like you know all this relevancy in
for this you would want to rank for the
you know pilot g2 and then for each of
these it would be like black pile of g2
red pile of g2 blue and so on alright um
and guys and gals if you have more
questions on the silos let me know all
right let's see if anyone else was able
to join us a couple other folks so um
and that's you to card I hope I
pronounced your name correctly welcome
thanks for joining us
alright the third step is blog
commenting and essentially I mean people
don't really like blog commenting a lot
of folks will say it's a waste of time
um I'll tell you why I like them and I
will mention they are natural right so
if you go look
at for example this post that I was
talking about here this is a guest post
that I did at Empire flippers of course
and I mean people people commented on
this and then I replied back so it's
like totally natural for bloggers sorry
scroll so fast it's totally natural for
bloggers to go out there and comment on
blogs so totally natural thing to do um
yes it's true that these are nofollow
links um but it turns out um it doesn't
really matter right so it is good to
have you know this links back to my site
it is get good to have like some link
diversity from different domains even if
um it's nofollow in fact nofollow links
are natural part of your backlink
profile the biggest advantage is around
how they help you network right so for
example like this this guy blad Amir
here so he he commented and um you know
this is not even my blog but he
commented here I answered his question
back he could shoot me an email now and
he has a connection that your number one
shows that he reads my content and he he
actually commented on something specific
that he quoted there so that's good and
and actually it's a great way to network
and if actually kind of funny someone
sent me an email the other day they were
like hey I wrote this post about um like
I wrote this post about a guest posting
because you know I feel like there needs
to be more thorough information out
there I saw and what this is an email
that someone sent me by the way they
said uh I saw you linked to one of
backlinko those bryant deems haha post
on guest posting and i think mine's
better
and it's 12,000 words long let me know
what you think and you know why don't
you link to it and share it
I mean I'm even gonna do a blog post
about this so the thing is he sent me
him
a this email to give me like a reading
assignment 12,000 words is like 25 pages
by the way so he sent me all this
content about something I already know
how to do thing is I've never heard from
him before ever he doesn't read my blog
and he was just like basically trolling
the internet to find play places to you
know send that email to so um he didn't
take the hit I was like hey what's the
summary but the point is I'm digressing
here I'm sorry sorry folks but uh if he
would have liked commented on a couple
blog posts of mine
super simple would have taken him a
couple minutes you know you do it over a
couple weeks I would definitely remember
who he is and have like some
relationship with him but I just got a
random email from some guy um let me
hopefully he's not on here now okay cool
he's not on here but basically I you
know I got a random email and he didn't
network at all he just asked for
something so anyway the point is if you
leave blog comments that helps you
network it's really a smart thing to do
and I'll mention um I'll mention more
when we get to the guest posting part
which is coming right up if you do want
to get more into the blog commenting and
see how I do it you check out there's a
video here shows you how to find blogs
the comments on pretty fast okay how's
everybody doing out there by the way
alright we're gonna get to guest posting
in a second but I need to drink some
water
that's just for a second and I see Sean
asked a question here this really it's a
really good question Sean I will I'll
hold it until the Q&A session at the end
but that's a good question there and
let's see moving on to guest posting
here so I can share again
guest posting is natural they're the
primary do follow links that I get for
you know my niche sites and I keep
mentioning the guest post that I'm doing
on like Empire flippers and other places
that I've published my stuff and I
obviously do the same techniques on both
by my niche site and my internet
marketing site so same stuff it works
everywhere you just you get better as
you do the stuff in different places all
right I hope I'm getting better actually
okay so these are the kind of contextual
links that you can get as far as you
know links that you can control and sort
of manufacture if you get natural links
that's great but I can guarantee you
that it's rare that it happens in a
natural way there's so much content
that's being published right now um
you either have to sort of be in the you
know top top level of your niche
whether it's internet marketing or you
know some other some other sort of niche
whatever it may be you have to be really
like the top 1% top 5% to actually get
natural links so it can happen but it's
pretty rare so to get links you kind of
have to go out there and generate it
yourself through guest posting for me I
definitely do get links to affiliate
content I do mention it must be worthy
so that means you can't have just
garbage content right it needs to be
somewhat valuable and at least appear to
be helpful right it doesn't necessarily
have some like solvable problems the
other part is if you write a good guest
post or have one written I don't do the
writing myself I have some writers that
help me out so essentially if the
writing is good then you're going to be
okay um you're gonna be able to get
those links to your affiliate content
I've only had my links removed a couple
times and it was most likely due to you
subpar content on the guest post so I
know that a lot of people even in some
of these webinars people have mentioned
that they've had a hard time I'm just
pouring water here sorry for the sand
effects people have mentioned quite a
bit to me that they've had a hard time
getting links to their affiliate content
I believe a lot of the time they don't
even try to be honest with you upon
further reflection I realize a lot of
people just didn't try to just thought
hey no with a link to that content in
fact I used to say that by the way but
the other part is you know once I asked
a couple other questions it's clear you
know subpar content on their site is
subpar content of the guest post and
when that happens you know you're just
lucky to get a guest post at all so the
other part is um you know when you're
doing the networking through blog
commenting as I mentioned so you do
