Don't you just wish you could sometimes pick the brains
of those who are already successful?
If you're a YouTuber and you trying to figure out YouTube
well guess what, I did that for you.
in Los Angeles and I asked some YouTubers that I found
who're some good friends of mine
who're doing really really well in the space,
what's one thing you wish knew
before you got started on YouTube?
- [Interviewer] Aight so Evan - Yeah
- [Interviewer] What's the one thing you wish knew
before you got started on YouTube?
- That I would suck at the beginning.
That it would take me 350 videos until I wasn't
absolutely embarrassed by my content.
I think we get to expect something to be great
we look at Pat Flynn, we look at amazing people
who are doing an amazing job online
and we think we can do it
and then when we start, we realize we can't
and then we quit too soon
but just like you didn't learn English the first time
and you didn't learn to tie your shoes
the first time you tried or skateboarding or anything,
you're not going to learn how to be
great on camera the first around time either.
And so the most important thing is to get up
and do it again and were you better than yesterday.
Use the people who are ahead of you as an inspiration,
to kick yourself forward,
instead of kicking yourself down that you suck.
- I wish I knew that the quality of the videos
wasn't as important as we all think that they
actually are, I mean, at the end of the day,
people are there for the content.
Everyone gets stuck in their own way, myself included.
My background is in video production
but the quality of the videos isn't the focus
it's the content itself and delivering to your audience,
speaking direct to them.
Yes, if you've got the nice bells and whistles,
that might play a little part, but even if you've got
the worst looking video with the best content,
you're still going to have
that same effect for your viewers.
So that was something I wish was drummed into me
early on in the channel.
- One thing I wish I knew is that people care way less
about me then they care about what I can do for them.
And I've made several mistakes throughout my career
as a YouTuber making videos about myself,
honestly copying other people thinking that the topics
they did would work for me and not actually listening
to what my audience really cared about which is what
I can provide to them in terms of tips
or solutions that can improve their lives.
- So one thing I wish I would've known
before I started YouTube was not to care
about the number of subscribers you have,
just focus on creating really quality content
and find other ways to monetize what you're doing
if that's your thing outside of ads and brand deals.
- Believe it or not and it's going to seem so pedestrian,
but it is so true.
The value of consistency.
Setting a schedule, publishing on a regular routine,
a frequent schedule, in order to grow your community.
I don't think that there's a single thing that a
new creator can do to entrench themselves with a
community in a more easy way than consistently,
on a weekly, twice a week basis, publish your
valuable content.
- The thing I see cause so much pain
with so many video marketers is expectations
before they get started.
They have these ideas about what it's going to be like
when honestly they have no business making
a thought process of what the process will be like.
If you're excited about YouTube,
if you're excited about certain video creators,
and you're watching their channel
and you're excited about the comments and the engagement
and all these views and that can pull you in
but don't let that thing that that will be your experience
and when you can learn to love the journey,
the small rewards along the way,
when that becomes the thing that you truly learn to enjoy,
you will go far and you will do very, very well.
So that's my one tip.
Learn to love the journey and you will go far.
- Alright, big thanks to Derral Eves
for putting on VidSummit and bringing all
these amazing people together.
Thank you to everybody who had answered that question.
And if you're on YouTube, I'd love to know,
before you got started in YouTube,
what's one thing you wish you knew
before you got started.
