So, I'm in LA right now about to speak onstage
at an amazing event called VidSummit
and I'm onstage to talk about podcasting and stuff like that
about the big mindset shift change that I made
since coming to this event last year that has helped me
grow my channel by nearly two times.
So we started with 60,000 subscribers,
I'm at over or very close to 150,000 subscribers
and it was a lot of what I learned at this event,
a lot of who I collaborated with, but it was this one thing
that's been the biggest shift for me on YouTube
that I wanted to talk to you today about.
Now, before I get to that, I have to change
for my presentation really quick so hold on.
(hard rock music)
All right, I think we're ready to go.
Now, like I was saying earlier,
I came to this event last year
with a decently-sized YouTube channel, 60,000 subscribers.
But here's the thing, I'd put out a video
every once in a while and they would be months apart
and I'd only get a few hundred views.
It was a little depressing to see that many subscribers
and that many views, very little, because of the algorithms
and mostly because I just hadn't been communicating
with my audience and publishing consistently.
And I later figured out, and this is thanks
to a lot of people who I spoke to,
that the problem wasn't the fact
that I wasn't publishing consistently.
That was a by-product of what the problem was.
The problem was I was trying too hard to be perfect.
I wanted every single video to hit home every single time.
I wanted every shot, every description, every title,
every thumbnail, all the things to be perfect
and that's why I didn't publish consistently.
And because I didn't publish consistently,
well, my numbers reflected that.
So starting in February of 2018,
I started publishing more regularly,
started just hitting record and just letting things happen.
And as a result of that the channel has grown,
the engagement is higher, Team Flynn has now become a thing.
All of you who are watching this right now
are seeing this because I'm just not afraid
to hit record anymore.
I'm not afraid that things aren't gonna be perfect.
I'm not afraid that the audio may be a little bit off.
That stuff can be perfected and will be
and hopefully improved a little bit later.
But you just gotta hit record and go.
And it made me think of when I first started my podcast.
It was the exact same thing.
I tried to be perfect and because of that
nothing ever happened.
I made a big announcement on the blog in December of 2008
right when the blog started
that I was gonna start a podcast.
My first episode didn't come out until July of 2010,
a year and a half later because every time
I would try and start, I wouldn't think it was good enough.
And eventually got to the point with my first episode
that I said you know what, I'm just gonna hit record
and go and let things happen.
Things started to take off and the podcast has been
tremendously valuable in my business
and it's made a massive impact on other people's lives.
So what I have learned (upbeat music)
and what I wanna talk to you about before I head downstairs
and go onstage and talk about podcasting
with the crew here at VidSummit is to just hit record
and go or just open up that blog post editor and write.
Or just turn on your microphone and begin recording.
Whatever platform you're on, just go and do
without any worry about whether or not
people are gonna like it or not.
Yes, you're gonna make mistakes,
you're gonna spell things incorrectly,
things are gonna be off,
your lighting's gonna be off, whatever.
Who cares?
You're trying and you're putting yourself out there
and that's how you get better.
Just hit record and go.
Partly filming this video for myself in the future
when I don't wanna film videos.
I'm gonna come back, watch this,
and hopefully be motivated again
and hopefully you are because I know that there's something
that you know that you've been needing to do
that you've just been holding off,
you've been procrastinating on, you've been too scared,
you've been worried about perfectionism.
Just hit record and go.
That's my message to you, Team Flynn.
You're amazing.
Hit subscribe if you haven't already
because we got a lotta great videos coming your way.
I appreciate you so much.
I love you.
I'll see you in the next video, bye.
