your niche site content for your

authority site this is what we're

talking about today I'm Doug Pennington

from the itch site project and we're

gonna talk about keyword density so I

know a few people are going to be

hopping on in a second so I'm gonna just

say hello to everyone project sounds

like the audio is working which is

awesome I say we have a few people

waiting in the house already

know it's interesting I will come to the

questions towards the end

today it's not a Q&A session today we

have a specific topic so I will humor

your questions I will answer them quick

I won't answer them directly but I'll

come to them later Q&A is actually on

Friday today we're going to talk about

the keyword density we have someone in

always takes a couple minutes for for

people to hop on here so hopefully

everyone can hear me all right you know

today we're talking about keyword

density is the question I got sent and

it was sent in the other day we have

John on from John Sweeney awesome so

we're talking about content specifically

and this kind of goes nicely with the

content series that I published over a

couple weeks ago so there was a

three-part series about

writing content yourself coming up with

outlines sort of generating the the core

outline to write content and then I

talked about hiring writers and how I

hire writers where I write hire writers

what I pay them and that sort of thing

and then I talked about scaling the

content team and growing a team even if

you if you never built a team before I

talked about how to do it in an

incremental way so you're not

overwhelmed so polina's on Dennis what's

up okay so I'm gonna get into and I did

see the questions earlier like I said I

will answer them because I'm just a nice

guy and I'll answer your questions for

you but Q&A is actually on Friday so if

you have a question try to keep it on

the topic of today which is keyword

density so here is your a couple of

things that I want to point out before

we even talk about how to find the right

keyword density so number one a lot of

people myself included recommend the

Yoast SEO plugin the Yoast plug-in is

cool for a couple reasons it has some

nice tools built in like you can edit

your htaccess file without having to log

into your cPanel or an FTP or whatever

to access the actual file so you can get

to it that way you can no index specific

archive pages like the tag archive the

category archive author archive many of

these archive pages you really don't

want those to be indexed by Google

because you don't actually want those

archive pages to rank in Google so if

you know index them Thanksgiving the

problem and there's some other cool

features that you know so lets you do

like enter in certain meta meta titles

meta descriptions other meta data for a

page so that's cool one thing that I

don't like about the Yoast plug-in is

basically it tells you like a keyword

density

they recommend and the thing is if

you're watching this if you're watching

me right now you probably are doing

keyword research in a very specific a

very deep way that the Yoast plug-in

isn't really built for it's made for

like the general population of bloggers

not affiliate marketers so if you use

like a keyword golden ratio term that's

kind of a long one

then you're gonna be over optimizing

your content you're going to be using

the keyword too much the thing is like

you know trying to think of a good

example of a keyword goal ratio term I'm

just gonna make one up it's usually like

a long phrase like best pilot pen for

writing on high quality paper it's a

very long phrase it's so long in fact

that it would be really unnatural to

write that out more than like one time

it just it doesn't make sense to have it

like four or five times and basically

the Yoast plug-in will tell you to like

over optimize your content especially if

it's a long keyword phrase so that's one

thing and this is where people get

confused right they'll put in their

keyword phrase best pilot pen during the

high quality paper and then Yoast tells

them they need to use it like X percent

of the time and they end up just putting

that phrase in a bunch it's weird

so that it's aspect number one number

two let's say you're getting content

written like I mentioned in part two of

that content series that I talked about

before and basically you're hiring a

writer and they think hey I've heard

about SEO I know about SEO writing and

they think they need to put the keyword

in several time so someone may be

telling you hey we need to use this

keyword several times again your keyword

stuffing it looks weird it looks

unnatural so those are a couple of the

main problems you may run in

to additionally if you're if you're

smart and you're thinking about these

sort of details like the keyword density

then you may just be you know looking at

your content you're thinking by using

that phrase enough Yoast is telling one

thing I'm getting other information from

different sources it's really unclear I

don't know what to do so luckily I have

a great answer for you and it kind of

takes the guesswork out because I could

tell you some percentage four percent of

the time half a percent whatever but if

you do that it's sort of it makes an

assumption about the niche it makes an

assumption about like the content that

you're trying to rank for and stuff like

that so here's what you should do

there's a plugin called SEO quick it's

free it works on Chrome I'm pretty sure

to have one for a couple other browsers

too but I use the chrome version because

that's just what I use so SEO quake and

it will give you lots of information

about like on-page stuff on your site or

a site any page what you want to do is

take a look at the keyword density for

other pages right not your site you're

going to do some competitor analysis

you're gonna put in the term that you're

trying to rank for you're gonna look at

hopefully the niche sites that are niche

or Authority sites that are ranking like

in the top 10 or top 20 pick like 3 or 4

the higher that they're ranking the

better so if you could pick the top

three and it your authority sites you

can go check out their keyword density

so why are we doing this basically you

want to find out what Google likes right

so if you go and check out the keyword

density for what's ranking well already

then you can go ahead

take those numbers into account average

them together and then that's what

you'll want to aim for because Google is

telling you that keyword density is what

it deems you know I guess as the best in

class for that set of data and that

keyword specifically so that's what you

do use SEO quick you check out the

keyword density for like the top three

or so nature Authority sites for that

keyword phrase and that's exactly how

you do it so it takes the guesswork out

you'll have to listen to us you know

have to listen to me you'll find the

data yourself for the specific keyword

and by the way you shouldn't necessarily

assume that it's the same like across

the board so if you did this at one time

for one keyword that just tells you for

that keyword phrase what the keyword

density should be so you need to do it

again and again again really though I

must never check this by the way was a

question I got I never check it I just

had my writers write a normal article

and basically it works out fine so that

up Lorraine says the problem is that it

counts all the words on the page not

just from the post sure that's true but

it's a good baseline so you know you're

right but your point may not be relevant

it doesn't matter I don't think if you

have another way to do it you definitely

I mean you could pull the data but I

mean really I'm pretty sure the SEO

quake plug-in takes into account like

with the Google crawler sees right so

that's kind of uniform across all sites

so I think it's okay John says I use the

main keyword phrase three times in the

title and the content and then once an

image perfect that sounds great yeah

that sounds pretty good to me just in

general

Rachel asks have I ever used density

engine it compares all the competitors

at wants to give you the average density

no I haven't but that actually sounds

pretty good although when you say all

the competitors it would be important to

just pick the good competitors you don't

want all your competitors because

probably some of them weren't doing a

great job and what other questions do we

have up here

okay and then Adrian some people were

asking random questions Adrian says do

you put different product reviews on the

same page or will you have a page for

every product every category and so on

it depends I do all of those things

for competitive niches on pets and

health yeah it should

polina says 500 people 590 people

searched on Google for my keyword with

all in title of six should i target this

keyword yeah shouldn't that's a slam

dunk I don't even have to do the math on

that one

okay Rachel says it does top 20 top

sorry top 10 top 25 30 for a keyword

shirk that this should be good

and I haven't used the tool but it

sounds like that would be a great one to

question what plug-in do I use for

geolocation affiliate links you've heard

mixed reviews for ez Azon

right now I'm using one link turns out

it's just a big hassle like unless you

get a lot of traffic from international

cut link from other countries

international places that have the

affiliate program have an affiliate

program that you could actually enroll

in I think it was like 14 unless you get

a significant amount of traffic it

doesn't matter so I wouldn't recommend

you take a look at genius lengths

they're very good they're nice people

they're easy Azon is a fine tool but I

don't really worry about it the site

that Robin I had for project a white hat

we had no international stuff going on

we didn't care because not enough

traffic was coming in for us to even

like try to do that so unless you have

like just a shitload of traffic coming

in from like international places then

you really don't need to worry about it

Paul says Alexa gives you the percentage

of traffic from top keywords okay cool

good to know good to know

Rachel mentions do I just the density at

a single word or phrase level I would if

I was looking at this stuff I would do

it for both I don't look at this I I

don't this is how you do it if you're

concerned about it but I'm not concerned

about it so I take that for what it's

worth so this is a question that was

sent in this is the right way to do it

if you're into the

data but I don't necessarily think it's

something that you should worry about

that said I mean you know you could

overuse a keyword for sure and you

shouldn't do that but there's a lot of

things there's a lot of things that you

can be concerned about and most of them

don't matter so I don't know but if you

if you are looking at this actually I'll

tell story in a second I CQ dog okay

so Rachel says do I just the density for

a single word of the phrase level okay

here's here's the thing

so I remember a couple years back when I

was kind of getting started actually was

I was probably already in for about a

year or so I heard actually two separate

occasions and you know one of my buddies

came back and they said hey I heard this

this person they were doing a study on

keyword density and they said for single

word phrases it should be no more than I

think it was like two and a half percent

two-word phrases it should be two

percent three word phrases like up to

one and a half percent and then four or

longer phrases should be like half a

percent or less right so very specific

criteria and they said maybe this guy

like changed up the keyword density on

the site if his rankings went up I just

changed it on my site and you know I saw

a movement right away within a few hours

so I thought hey that is a great thing

to do I should I should like work on

keyword density so I got really like

obsessed with keyword density and guess

what

no change of my sites like no it didn't

do anything and then you know my friend

there was a little movement because it

made some changes and then this I

returned to

where I was right so there was no actual

like improvement that said right so we

hear stories even I mean I tell stories

too right we hear these stories about

like even the key word golden ratio or

other things right keyword density for

example and we think oh that's the next

thing I need to focus on you implement

this stuff and nothing happens because

you're probably hearing like an outlier

people are sharing their information

right they're sharing their tactics and

what they're trying before they get the

results back and that's that's what

happened when you know I went down this

rabbit hole it turns out I said most

things don't matter there's like a few

core things like content good keyword

research and links there's like three

things you need to worry about if it

doesn't fall into those three things it

probably doesn't matter that much no I

know the keyword density could fit into

the container of content but when it

comes down to it if you're seeing people

getting like outrageous results from

like a little tweak may not be like

accurate so just keep that keep that in

mind I mean I'm not pointing anyone like

specifically but I would say there's a

lot of stuff that you know I worry about

okay cubic says do I eventually evolved

from the kgr method when your site is

older to a more competitive keyword

approach you imagine this the more

natural or that's a natural transition

of growing a website yes or you could

publish both at the same time and the

keyword golden ratio stuff if you're not

familiar with the keyword golden ratio

by the way look it up there's a video

that I did and I'm releasing more

content coming up soon on the keyword

golden ratio by the way so basically you

can release both and publish both pieces

of content keyword golden ratio and more

competitive stuff at the same time and

the more competitive stuff will just

take a lot of your rank you have to get

links to it and stuff like that kids

your stuff you have to get the links

ranked faster lower keyword

so you can balance this I kind of like a

blend but yeah you grow into it you dog

that's right and I see we got handful of

average keyword density alright should

be pretty straightforward arithmetic so

let's say you look at three sites you

add together those keyword densities and

then you divide by three if you look at

five sites you add the five keyword

densities together and divide by five if

you're unsure how to do it then look up

averaging just the simple arithmetic

simple algebra okay Lorraine says you

said the keyword golden ratio works up

to 250 searches not you says that

targeting 600 searches is a no-brainer

the question is if it is going to be

more difficult to rank compared to the

low search volume okay right I see what

you're getting at

so the thing is the sheer number the

sheer number of all in titles that you

gave it was so low that you should be

fine the reason why they're a keyword

golden ratio doesn't work for over 250

as well is because I'm saying you go to

say a thousand searches per month 0.25

is 250 right so all in title would be

250 and you gave like a single digit

number so I know that there's not that

many you know if it can be with it's

less than 10 so I know that would work

and that's why so but you know whenever

you're in doubt you should test it so

publish like get the content written

write it yourself publish it see what

happens but in my opinion you should go

for that one all right D card says every

niche is different and we need to look

at our competitors keyword density

adjust accordingly yep exactly

Polina says you you lunched your site

probably launched your site about 4

weeks ago and you see some traffic cool

the bounce rate is 95 percent is that

normal for a site so young or am i doing

something wrong

your site's too young to really draw

much data from it additionally I bit

your traffic is super low so it's not a

good sample size and then the the other

thing I'll add is I don't know if you're

doing anything wrong

based on the information that you gave

me so far but what you mentioned the the

fact that you're getting traffic in 4

weeks that's really good so keep up the

good work on that and don't worry about

the metrics and analytics so much right

now ok Syrian ask how many keyword

phrases do I actually focus on it

depends if it's a keyword golden ratio

piece of content just one and actually

for other content it's usually just one

okay

even says you got the keyword you get

the density correctly that after

indexing the kids your article in Google

search it ranks on page three but no

longer ranks the next day should that be

a concern I don't know maybe does it it

depends on how long the page has been

out there so if you publish it it shows

up and then it goes away then it comes

back like the next day okay that's okay

if your site's really young like less

than four months old sometimes you'll

see some stuff show up and disappear

I've heard that increasingly in the last

six months or so but yeah if it is not

showing up again at all I would be

slightly concerned if it comes back then

you should be good to go

philosophy of keeping things simple it's

helpful to focus and remove the noise of

what everyone else is saying thanks I

appreciate that and the thing is like

we're all like trying to figure out like

as you know content producers and like

marketers or whatever we're trying to

figure out like more stuff to talk about

I hopefully I'm trying to focus on like

the things that actually matter where it

highlights my skills as a project

manager and like a process person where

a lot of people just have a marketing

background or maybe they have like maybe

they have no background at all and maybe

they're not even that good of a

communicator so they're just like

rehashing other information that they've

seen elsewhere but haven't actually

implemented it I try not to do that I

also try to not publish things that I'm

still developing or testing so by the

time you see it I've done it a few times

and other people have done it - so like

by the time you see it like it's usually

pretty

where you may seen this alive even

recently where people are talking about

what they're doing they're testing stuff

they don't know if it works yet but

they're telling you that it works I

remember about I must have been like

around this time last year maybe a

little bit earlier even people were

talking about they move their site to

HTTPS right the secure version these SSL

certificate and all that they said hey I

moved my site this is a big podcast by

the wind said I move my site over to the

the secure hosting and my traffic went

up by 10 percent okay cool I was like

all pumped but then it's kept listening

to the episode these guys changed like

six things they did multiple things

including you know other traffic

impacting activities and they were just

claiming that it was HTTPS were they

offering some hosting affiliate stuff I

don't know probably so you kind of have

to remember like the centum of why

people are sharing information and stuff

like that so anyway I do try to keep

these simple and I tried to make sure

that I know what I'm talking about

before I start telling a lot of

different people and not everyone's like

that so ok we just says you agree with

the core elements although you find that

the city has massive impact across on

your site the trick is to compare the

top 5 to 10 and use the average

densities cool but I I concur with you I

just haven't gotten into it as much but

I bet you're exactly right ok and rachel

says dibsity Engine compares the

keywords across

the competitors say that you can make

adjustments cool Paul says I just

published about 10 kg are pieces of

content when should I check if it ranks

you know you could probably give it a

day or two and see but I would use a

tool like sir blab to check it look into

the sky okay I'm gonna cut it off here

footprints that everyone else is looking

for so don't do this don't look for your

keyword or your niche and write for us

guest post guidelines don't look for

those look for something else if you're

looking for the same footprints that

everyone else is it's a very crowded

Channel there's people sending tons of

emails and that's just not a good route

you should work on building a

relationship with people then you have

good guest posting opportunities Luanne

don't actually get that many views and

what I really want I want people to buy

reality is some people don't need the

course some people already know what

they're doing some people are on this

channel they're on this and they already

bought the course - so anyway - isin the

channel kind of waters it down and it's

not really worth it to me to like

compromise the channel I guess you know

the heck is kgr that's the keyword

golden ratio and a lot of times you know

we just throw it out but it's the

keyword golden ratio data-driven way to

find keywords you can look it up on the

channel and you'll find a video on it
