- Hey, what's up, Team Flynn?
It's Pat here in SPI Studios right now.
It's time to do a little bit of
cleaning before the end of the year,
and I thought this would be a good time as I
clean the office for me to tell you a little bit
about how the business went this year.
I've stopped the income reports this year,
and I have a very specific video that you
can watch if you click up in the upper right-hand
corner right now and click on the card you'll see
exactly why I stopped the income reports.
But that doesn't mean I'm gonna be
sharing what's going on in the business.
I'm actually gonna be doing a lot of that in 2019
for very specific campaign-related items so that
you can actually do a better job of taking what I do
and implementing that in your business as opposed to
just the monthly here's how everything went and
very surface level kinda tips related to those things.
kind of important things that have happened this
year in Flynndustries and the SPI kind of world.
Also, if you're thinking of doing an annual review yourself,
I want you to think about sort of the tips
that I share along the way, as well,
so that you can better think about what you can
do in 2019 to sort of level up your business.
I'm really excited 'cause there are
a lot of fun things happening in 2019,
but it's always good to look back at the prior
year and understand kinda what went well,
what didn't go well, what didn't go as planned,
what are the new things that have happened,
and what we can continue to do moving forward,
or what we need to stop to do moving forward.
I'm just gonna moving around, and actually,
you're in the right spot right now because
I'm gonna show you something really quick.
I want to tell you a little bit
about how the courses went this year.
That's actually one surprising thing that a lot
of people didn't even realize is that I actually
didn't even come out with any new courses this year,
where the prior year I actually came out with three.
So this year was really focused on optimizing the
funnels and the marketing of those particular courses.
I've been doing that in a number of different ways,
which I'll talk about in just a second,
but come here, I'll show you really quick.
I'm in Teachable right now in my Sales Dashboard,
and currently it is November 30th and we did over
$1.3 million in course sales, which is really cool.
My earnings are over a million,
and we are actually doing affiliate marketing
with these, too, so we have people who are,
in fact, promoting these courses for us.
So to do over a million dollars in sales,
really excited about that, especially with a year where
we did work to optimize those sales and marketing funnels.
One way that we did that, and I'm just gonna,
again, start moving things around,
but one way that we did this was through webinars.
That's something that I was very
afraid to do prior to this year,
but I knew it was something that I needed to do
and step up into, and they were very successful.
I actually hold them in here.
I actually stand here when I do the webinars.
And this camera over here,
which is a Black Magic camera, this is the one,
if you've seen my studio tour,
which I'll link to in the description,
as well, this is the camera we used
for the web cam for those webinars.
A lot of people say that the webinars that I do
are a little bit different because they're not
just like with a web cam or slides only.
There are slides in those webinars,
but people have said that because of the level
of quality that I've had in the webinars
that it's definitely helped with the experience.
I've also been introduced to a new cool called demio,
d e m i o, which is the webinar
platform that we've been using.
Prior to that I've used other ones and they
just didn't do the job like I wanted them to,
and I'm very satisfied with demio and how
they've worked out for the webinars we've done.
They've helped make me money, and I'll link to that,
my affiliate link, down below.
Since it's an affiliate link I have to tell you that
I do get a commission if you go through that.
Another thing we did this year, as I'm walking by here,
we got this.
So, the YouTube channel has definitely been growing.
Can you see that, ooo?
The YouTube channel's definitely been growing,
and thank you all for subscribing.
If you haven't subscribed yet, please do
because we have a lot of fun things coming.
This is the Silver Button award that you get
when you pass 100,000 subscribers.
When we started going full on with YouTube
back in February of this year, what'd we have,
like 70,000 subscribers about at that time?
Currently, at this time that we're recording this,
we're almost at 160k,
so it's definitely growing quite a bit.
We are experimenting with all kinds of videos.
Obviously, you can tell this is a very sort of like
in the office, or the office, style video.
We've done other ones where it's more over here at
the table and it's very like structured and very formal.
We've done other ones in different spaces around the office.
Different kinds of topics.
And it's really funny, 'cause sometimes we'll
think that we have a really good idea,
a lot of people are searching for a
specific keyword and we film a video on that,
and it doesn't do very well.
Other times they do.
Sometimes we do videos kind of just off the cuff
because it's kind of a trending topic,
and a lot of times those do really well,
and it's kind of just still kind of
based on whatever YouTube wants,
and it's very surprising sometimes.
We've even seen some videos that were filmed
awhile back that are just now, months later,
finally starting to pick up steam.
So, YouTube has been a really
interesting experiment this year.
I am gonna continue to do YouTube
videos on a consistent basis,
so hopefully two videos a week on
Tuesday and Thursday publications.
Again, just continuing to build Team Flynn here.
Let's go back into the equipment room.
(bump)
I'll make sure to not drop anything important.
Speaking of videos, kind of a random thing,
I don't know if you can see this over here,
but this is the t-shirt rack.
Because we batch process a lot of these videos
we do a lot of videos all in one day.
And I don't want to do all the videos in the same t-shirt,
so actually, there was a discussion before this video about
what would be the best shirt before doing this one,
which is the flux capacitor since we're going back
in time and doing a little bit of a review.
As you can see, there's a bunch here.
I got like School of Greatness, Leadpages,
some Back to the Future stuff, Social Media Marketing World,
Serve First shirt, a bunch of different colors of those,
some Teachable shirts like this one,
teach everything you know,
and these are some shirts that we did earlier today.
This is my recent favorite one, which is,
picked it up in Seattle, actually.
Stay cool, stay cool.
We also have, gosh, I'm just,
Jay Baer Talk Triggers, new book that just came out.
I keep getting a lot of people's
books and this is where they go.
I can't read all of 'em, but this is a great one.
Jay Baer has some amazing things.
His previous book to this one was Hug Your Haters,
which is like the opposite.
This is what you can do to get your
audience to spread the word about you.
Hug Your Haters is like what to do if
people are saying bad things about you.
Anyway, let's go to the bookshelf here and put
this up because we're running out of room.
Another thing that's been working out really
well this year is continuing to be
able to feel the validation with what I do.
That's really important to me.
A lot of you have seen this before,
which is a Serve First sort of mural here.
Thank you to Hailey, by the way, who painted this.
But this is where I put a lot of thank-you notes.
This is a thank-you note that I got
that I just wanted to post up as we organize,
so I'm just gonna pin that here.
It just reminds me about why I do what I do.
Hopefully, this reminds you about why you
should be doing what you're doing.
To serve people first.
To help people and solve their problems.
That's really what entrepreneurship is about,
and this has always been my stance since day one.
Just what can I do to better help people,
and that's always been able to answer the questions
that I have each year, which are like, oh,
what should I do, what should I focus on?
It's always based on what can be the most helpful.
That's why this year, Caleb's pointing over here,
yeah, this pile here is because we don't have a warehouse
space to fulfill and deliver these things quite yet,
but we needed a spot for these,
and these are the Let Go books that came from
a very successful Kickstarter campaign,
thank you to those of you who have backed this.
This is the really, really nicely designed book
that was created by the Page Two Team over in Canada.
This was a really interesting project because,
not just because it was launched on Kickstarter
and it was my first time on Kickstarter,
which was actually kind of for two reasons.
Number one, to just experiment with Kickstarter
and see what that platform was like.
But also to learn about it so that me and Caleb,
when we come out with the SwitchPod next year
that we understand how the platform worked and what
we can do to better maximize our efforts there.
This book was written in 2013.
This is the first time it's been in a print form.
We've also had a signature copy,
so that's my signature there, this one's for Angela,
and as you can see, it's like a slipcover there,
which is really cool.
A little imprint of an elephant and some
other things that are really nice there, too.
Basically, what we've been trying to do this year
in the brand is really upping our quality with everything.
From the videos to the publications that
we have to the content on the website,
which is what I want to talk about next.
When it comes to planning,
which is always happening in this room here,
this is called the Green Room for
those of you haven't seen this office yet.
It's not just because there's green furniture in here,
but this is where planning happens.
If you're in theater, if you're in TV or television,
you know that the Green Room is where you go to kind of
set yourself up before you get on camera or on stage.
This is where we do a lot of planning.
You an see there's a lot of Post-It Notes.
We already did some planning for 2019 up there.
There is some stuff on the wall about
the videos that we were shooting today.
But when it came to what we were gonna focus
on this year in terms of content,
YouTube was a big part of it, but on the blog,
specifically, maybe you noticed this, maybe you didn't,
but a lot of our strategy on the blog was SEO related,
and it was not publishing new content.
A lot of the content that was published on the blog
this year was actually older content that had been
ranking not at the top of the search engines but on
the first page or at the top of the second page.
Taking those articles and updating them.
Rewriting them or adding new things.
Taking out things that were outdated.
And then republishing them with a new date
and exposing them to the new audiences that we've built,
social media, sending email blasts out about them.
That's been working really well to increase the
rankings for those older things that were kinda working,
now they are working and they are bringing
new traffic and SEO on the website.
So that's been a really good strategy for us.
I've had some people call me out and go,
hey Pat, you haven't written anything new,
you keep updating these older posts,
and that's because we're just
following our strategy for this year.
We decided to just keep it simple on the blog,
take older things that were working and were
great and are still useful and are evergreen,
but a little bit outdated, reupdating them,
publishing them with a new date, and sending them out,
sending signals to Google that, hey,
there's new stuff here, let's rank it higher.
And it has been working, it has been working really well.
That was our SEO strategy and the blog strategy.
And then, overall, just planning.
Planning is so important.
(cough) Excuse me.
See here, the team was in town a couple weeks ago
and we were planning the rest of the year.
(cough) Cut, cut.
(beep)
Sorry about that, I'm a little sick right now.
But we're okay.
These are the big things that are happening in 2019 for us.
The big one I wanna call out is this Post-It Note
right here, FlynnCon July 26, 27, and 28 in San Diego.
This is related to a lot of the
speaking that I've done this year.
You know, I've traveled quite a bit this year in 2018,
and it's been great, I love traveling,
I love speaking, I love delivering keynotes.
I delivered a keynote in Social Media Marketing World,
which was really cool, my dad was there,
that's in my hometown, and I loved that presentation.
That was the biggest audience I've ever
spoken in front of, which was amazing.
But I think it's about time after 10 years in business now,
with the community that I've built and Team Flynn,
to bring that community together,
and that's why my team and I we came up with
the idea of coming up with our conference.
That I don't have to speak as much elsewhere
and spend a lot of time working on new presentations,
which is I normally do, but doing it for myself,
and doing it for my own audience in my own
hometown in La Jolla, in San Diego, California.
That's happening July 26, 27, and 28.
We're taking some unique approaches with this event.
We're doing a number of things, like for example,
making it family friendly.
It's in the summer in San Diego, bring your family to town.
If you actually wanna check out FlynnCon and
see if there's actually any tickets still available,
you can go to flynncon1.com.
We're gonna have 500 people there, which is amazing.
We're also gonna have a lot of surprises,
which I wanna share with you, and my team knows,
but nobody else knows.
But I wanna keep it kinda secret and a little bit
mysterious because that's gonna be part of the event
experience is all these little surprises that happen.
One thing I can tell you that's really exciting
is something we're calling the Smart Bar.
Whenever I go to conferences I see a lot of
people who are there from other companies
with booths, you know, the sponsors, right?
They're there to sell things to that
audience that a conference has brought together,
which is really smart.
Those companies can help supplement the cost of the event.
People get introduced to new
companies and those kinds of thing.
We are gonna have sponsors at this event,
but what's really cool is a large number of them are gonna
be not there with booths to kind of sell you things,
they're gonna be there with booths to help you with things.
If you imagine the Apple Genius Bar where
you can go in and sign up and get some
direct help with your Apple device, well,
you're gonna have the same thing, but with your email,
'cause ConvertKit's gonna be there, or with your podcast,
'cause Buzzsprout's gonna be there, or Teachable,
who can help you with your online courses,
they're gonna be there, as well.
So you can actually go in and get direct help with your
email campaigns or your online courses or your podcast.
We're even gonna have podcasting booths so you
can actually even record while you're there.
So anyway, just a little taste
of what's happening at FlynnCon.
But I'm really excited because we're putting
a lot of focus into what 2019 is all about,
building the community and really supporting
the community and rewarding the community
and bringing the community together.
I have an amazing community.
Team Flynn is rockin', and I think it's
about time you all meet each other.
Our first event's gonna be off the hook.
It's gonna be fun.
So flynncon1.com.
Let's see, what else is on the board?
This is why you plan ahead.
Webinars, Kickstarter, speaking, FlynnCon, SEO.
Hey, wow, I covered kind of a lot of things already.
So I think the most important thing is when you review
your previous year you want to understand what you did.
So that would be the first thing that I would
recommend to you if you're gonna be doing an
annual review of your own is to just write a whole
list of everything that you've accomplished.
Go back in your calendar and start putting those each
on Post-It Notes so that you can see in one spot
all the things you've accomplished.
I think a lot of times, especially with how fast
entrepreneurship can be sometimes,
we often forget everything that we've accomplished,
and it's really important for you to remember
that because it should fire you up.
It should motivate you.
Even if you didn't get as much done as you wanted to,
at least be proud of the things that you did get done.
And then, with each of those things,
you might want to consider what
can you start, stop, and continue.
And that's a little exercise that my team and I
do together each year where we determine,
okay, like, how did 2018 go?
What are some things that we need to stop doing?
Things that we thought were gonna go well
but maybe didn't go so well and we can,
so for us for that this year was
a lot of the evergreen funnel that we were creating.
We were doing a lot of development
to create evergreen funnels,
meaning people come into the blog or go into some
sort of lead magnet and then get automatically pushed
into some promotions to one of my online courses.
We're not quite ready for that yet, we understand,
plus, because I've just been so excited with doing
all the webinars, which are live, typically each month,
those have been working out really well,
and I'm not getting tired of 'em,
and it's actually energizing me, which is really cool.
We're putting the evergreen content situation
for promotion on hold for now.
I do, however, have a great podcast episode that
I just recorded recently with Amy Porterfield,
which I'll link to below, which does talk about,
if you feel like you're ready for some automation
and some evergreen funnels in your business
to help sell your products or your courses or whatnot.
I'll link to that below because it was really,
really helpful and I'm not quite there yet,
we've realized that, so we're putting a stop to
even developing and thinking about that.
Other things that we are doing is
we're gonna start releasing newer content.
This year was a lot about, like I said,
taking older content, revamping it, and republishing it.
This year it's gonna be a lot of newer things.
One thing that we heard from many of you is that
you need more help with a lot of the logistical
stuff related to building a business.
So, business formation, accounting,
and a lot of the boring stuff that a lot of people
avoid talking about because it is kinda boring,
but I feel like my team and I are up to the task
to make it interesting and fun and exciting
to teach you how to make sure you can manage
your business because getting into entrepreneurship
you wear a lot of the hats and you often don't
know the answers to a lot of those questions that
you might have as you are wearing all those hats.
With the team on board and a lot of their expertise,
you're actually gonna see a lot of my team members
come to light and be front facing.
They were always kinda behind the scenes up until now,
and so, starting in 2019 you're gonna to meet many of them.
They're gonna actually write a lot of
articles that relate to their expertise.
We have Mindy with operations and systems and
integrating different tools and software into the business.
We have Jana who's an amazing project manager
to take these big, lofty goals like FlynnCon,
and how do you chop 'em up and turn 'em
into something actionable for the team,
and how do you assign roles to each of those things,
to Matt who's like a financial wizard and somebody
who can do a lot of great forecasting in your business
and a lot of the legal-related things, as well,
he'll be coming on to talk about, too.
So you're gonna get to meet some of them, as well.
That's something we're gonna start doing for you.
And then, continuing it's just always gonna
be about serving you and helping you figure
out how we can best answer those problems.
That's largely what FlynnCon's gonna be about, as well,
getting direct access to people so we can hear
from them what's been working, what's not working,
putting more systems into place
so we can understand more about you.
You might have seen on the blog recently,
if you to smartpassiveincome.com,
a little tool in the bottom right-hand corner
that pops up called RightMessage.
Brennan Dunn, big shout out.
It's been an amazingly successful tool already.
I want to show you a little bit
about what it does and what it's like.
For those of you who have your email service provider up,
and even if you don't, this can still work for you,
but essentially, what you're gonna do is
on your website you're able to sort of
ask some survey questions to your audience.
If I go to smartpassiveincome.com right now,
and if you wait a couple minutes
if it's not going to do it already.
By the way, this smart podcast player now
has a sticky player that lives on your website that
you can set up so it'll always play the latest episode.
Here it is, this is RightAsk, or powered by RightMessage,
and essentially it's a survey question.
So when you answer this question, for example,
and obviously, you can tailor them to your business,
so this first question is, which describes your business?
I'm just getting started,
I have a business that makes this much,
or I have a business that makes this much.
If a person, for example, clicks that they
don't have a business yet, here's what happens.
Now RightMessage will know when that person
comes back to the website that that person
is somebody who has yet to start a business.
I can specifically tailor messaging
on my website for that person.
I can, for example, on the homepage the
next time they come it might say, hey,
let me help you get your business started quick and easy,
as opposed to somebody who had marked
that they already have a business.
Perhaps the messaging for them the next time
they come to the website will be something like
let me help you grow and scale your business to
the next level, or something like that, obviously.
I'm not a pro copywriter, so it just takes time
to figure out exactly what the messaging is,
but you get the idea.
I'm able to tailor messages and personalize the website.
And the cool thing is, when you go into
the back-end of RightMessage, which again,
I'll go into in 2019 with some demo videos and such,
it's really powerful because
it's literally the same website.
I just use RightMessage to change it.
Very similar to like Google Optimizer
or any of those visual optimizer split test A B things.
Very similar, it's just the same page,
it just knows to serve the different
messages to those different people.
What I love about RightMessage in
particular is it connects to ConvertKit.
My email service provider knows
and it actually can tag them as such.
So I can send messages to them via email
based on their survey answers here.
Here's the other cool thing.
If a person is not yet on my email
list and they click something,
when they eventually get on my email list,
they will then be tagged kinda retroactively based
on certain survey questions that they've had.
And obviously, this is giving us
a lot of data about my audience, as well,
that I can use and implement in my business and
in the content that I create moving forward.
Those are some new things that are coming out,
which I'm really excited to talk more about later.
Just realized I haven't been doing a
very good job of cleaning the office,
and it's because you're here,
but that's okay, 'cause I'm here to serve you,
and I'll get to that in a minute.
Some final thoughts for you as
you begin to plan out your 2019.
I think it's really important that you understand
what you want your life to look at at the end of next year.
This is a thought experiment that I often
do whenever I'm trying to make decisions about
what I should do or certain things that I should
be sort of making decisions on.
I think about, okay, well, if I make this decision now,
or if I choose to go down this path,
or if this is really my goal for next year,
let's say things go well,
what is life gonna be like after the year is over?
What am I gonna be saying?
What is my life gonna be like?
How is this gonna help?
How is this actually not gonna help?
Or is it even something that's important?
A lot of times we make decisions based on
things that sound great, but before that,
think about in a true sort of hypothetical situation
if things were to go well, what would it be like?
It's also good to think about the opposite, as well.
Okay, if I make this decision and it doesn't go
according to plan, how am I gonna feel?
Is that okay, is it worth taking that risk?
What might life be like if this doesn't
work out the way I thought it was going to?
Again, just a little bit of forward thinking
can go a really long way with helping you make
those really great decisions for your business.
This was a more casual sort of annual review.
I just wanted to kind of give you insight,
bring you into the office as I'm cleaning up,
even though I didn't do a very good job,
and just kinda tell you how things went,
and moving forward there's a lot of things coming.
You'll hear some stuff on the podcast,
I'll link to it below, that are gonna talk more
about things happening in the future,
although I have revealed some of that already.
I can say that we had a very good year.
Definitely a record year for us internally.
Revenue-wise we did about $2.5 million in revenue,
which is great.
So as you can see, nearly 1.5 million in course sales,
the rest of that being made up
mostly in affiliate marketing,
and then some speaking and a little bit of consulting.
I also had a really amazing time with my Accelerator Group,
which for those of you are in the higher level
sort of income levels in my audience,
you would have probably remembered seeing an application
for that sort of very tight group of people.
That's been going strong and lot of
great success stories coming out of that.
I'll reveal more about that later next year, too,
'cause I've had a lot of people
ask me about how that's been going,
am I gonna continue to do it again?
The answer is yes.
It may or may not be structured the same way,
but it was definitely an experiment that has gone very well,
but that also made up for a lot of the cost,
or sort of the, sorry, the income for
about $2.5 million in revenue.
Really excited about that.
The biggest expense was team, for sure.
You know, about a million dollars was spent on people.
It was just crazy to me.
If you were to ask me when I started a business would you
ever spend a million dollars just on like hiring help,
I would have said absolutely not.
I would much rather do those things myself.
But, you know, I've changed as a business
owner over the last few years.
You may have seen an article from me that was
titled Don't Be Your Own Boss, Become the CEO,
and I'll link to that below, as well.
But it's more about how much do you value your time?
Making that investment into a team that can
help reward you and bring more income in.
I definitely wouldn't have been able to make
$2.5 million if it weren't for the team.
So you gotta consider that.
But I do know there are some things we can do to
improve and areas where we can save money, as well.
With all that being said, I just wanted to again
thank you for being a part of Team Flynn
and hopefully this gives you a little bit of
insight on where my head is at and hopefully
you can sort of move into 2019 with some motivation.
I'm excited.
I wanna hear from you.
In the comments section below, Team Flynn,
let me know what your big goals are for 2019.
I revealed some of mine for you today.
I would love to hear yours.
I just want to root for you and wish you the best of luck,
and again, thank you for being a part of Team Flynn.
I hope you enjoyed this kinda casual review.
Anyway, as always, Team Flynn for the win.
