Don't Waste 2019! 7 Specific Things to Plan Next Year

 Hey Team Flynn, Pat here.
It is almost the end of the year,
we're all enjoying the holidays right now,
I got my skinny fat grande blonde Americano
with five pumps of I don't know, it's just coffee
but what I wanted to do in this video
was just give you seven things
that you should be planning next year.
It doesn't matter what year this is,
maybe you're watching this in the future or something
but whenever it comes the turn of the next year,
some really important things to plan
and sometimes we forget some of these
so here are the seven things,
maybe you got some of them, maybe you got all of them,
hopefully at least one but here we go.
Alright, so number one, make sure you plan out your content.
Now you can't plan out your content for the whole year,
a lot of times we don't even know what's gonna happen
or the things we can talk about.
But in my business it's really important
that we get a little bit ahead of schedule
on the planning side of things
because really important number one,
it takes a lot of energy to figure out
kind of like what are the kinds of things
you wanna talk about or have on your podcast
or talk about on your blog or create videos about,
who you want to interview?
All those things are really important
to understand ahead of time.
But what we typically do is every quarter,
we think about the next quarter
so just recently the team came to town,
the last couple of weeks
and we just kind of put our heads together
and determined okay like what are we gonna be talking about
in the first quarter of 2019?
And we come up with ideas and we do a brain dump
and then we start picking and choosing
which ones would make sense.
And yes, there's obviously gonna be some things
that come up that you can then move things around for
but the reason it's important to think ahead of time
is because then you can batch process the ideation
and then later you can batch process the creation
where I don't want you to get stuck in
which is where I was for many years
which is as soon as you publish a piece of content,
you kind of hate yourself 'cause you have to go
oh my gosh like what am I gonna think about again?
Like what am I gonna write about?
I have no idea and you have to go
through that whole process of thinking about from scratch
what is it you're gonna produce again?
I did the same thing with my podcast,
it's never a good spot to be in.
That's called a hamster wheel of content of death
or something, I don't know,
some wheel and it's not very good.
But when you plan ahead, you can at least understand,
okay, at the moment, this one is published
or even before it's published,
you're already in the middle of starting
the production of another thing
because your team has a handle
or maybe you're in the editing process of another thing.
So just I want you to plan ahead
at least the first quarter of content
and again it doesn't have to be set in stone,
you don't even have to know the titles
of each of those pieces of content
but on your blog, your podcast, videos
or anything else that you might produce,
have an understanding of at least the topics
that you want to cover
so that your brain can start at least thinking about
what those things might be,
what the titles of those things might be,
who else might be involved,
what else you can read to research those kinds of things,
that sort of thing.
So number one, make sure you plan out your content
so you can be done with batch processing
the planning portion which is a different side of your brain
then the production portion.
So number two in addition to the content
that you're gonna be coming out with for the first quarter,
it would be really smart if you could think about
what it is that you wanna launch or promote
during the whole year, if possible,
or at least the first couple quarters?
That is any products that you have and you offer,
when are you gonna be launching those?
When are the big promotions for that?
What holidays are happening?
What do you wanna take advantage of?
Maybe your business takes advantage of the fact
that kids are out of school
and parents are at home with their families
so then that's when the vacation packages
come out for example
or maybe it's back to school related things
or maybe you know having a Cyber Monday
or Black Friday thing just even on the calendar
could at least start to frame your mind with okay like
amongst everything else that goes on
like this launch is gonna happen during that time.
So maybe that's for your own products.
I would also recommend thinking about
when you're gonna promote affiliate products as well,
that is products owned and operated by other people
or other companies and it doesn't necessarily mean
that they have to have a launch
like a big event on a specific day
with an affiliate contest or any of that stuff,
it just might simply mean that hey,
during this time of this particular month,
you're gonna be creating content
and supporting and promoting and sending emails out
and creating videos about perhaps that particular product.
For instance, one thing that we're gonna do next year
just to fill you in on a little bit
is we're gonna be talking about a new product
that I'm really excited to promote called RightMessage
by the guys over at RightMessage and Brennan Dunn
who's just the mastermind behind that.
So that's a tool that I'm using
in my website right now very successfully,
it's helping with our engagement with our audience,
it's helping increase the time
that people spend on the site,
it's helping increase our sales
and I wanna share that with everybody
so I know that there's gonna be a specific time
early next year where we're gonna be creating content
about that and promoting that
and perhaps we're even working with our team
for a special deal or something for you.
So it's really important
to think about those launches ahead of time
because a lot of times what people do is they just kind of,
just as they're going create these launches
and you know sometimes you forget that
well, you just recently did one
or you know a lot of times by not planning ahead
or even looking how the launches are spread out
amongst the whole year, you might suffer
because maybe two launches are really close to each other,
you need to also give your audience some breathing space
between those sort of heavier promotions
in addition to the sort of ongoing promotion
that you do maybe more casually or passively.
So number one was the content,
number two on top of that which obviously you can go back
and have the content support the launches as well
but think about how you want your launches
and the sort of bigger asks of your audience to be
throughout the next year.
Alright, next you want to consider what events
or conferences you might want to go to.
It's definitely something I recommend
you at least go once in 2019 to an event,
it's really important to meet with your community
or other people in your space, perhaps your audience,
your customers where they're at,
other influencers that you can meet
and develop relationships with.
You know sometimes the best way to build
and grow your online brand is to actually get offline,
that's what's gonna help you stand out and be remembered,
you get to build really special relationships
when you're with people in person.
So considering what events happen next year,
maybe it's Social Media Marketing World,
maybe it's FlynnCon, FlynnCon1.com
if you haven't gotten your ticket yet.
It's my first big event next year,
that's why I'm putting together an event
to bring the community together here as you can see,
I've got a lot of people in the audience
who have been helped in some way, shape or form over time
and I'd love to have a space
to bring all those people together,
so if you're looking for an idea
for an event to go to next year, perhaps FlynnCon,
FlynnCon1 'cause there's gonna be many more
but this is gonna be the first one.
I'd love for you to be a part of it,
FlynnCon1.com to get your tickets before they sell out,
if there are still any available.
Perhaps it's something like Podcast Movement
if you're a podcaster and you want to go
to something very specific
to that particular thing that you do.
FinCon is another one, not FlynnCon but FinCon,
The Financial Blogger conference
which is happening in Washington D.C. next year,
Podfest is another one,
there's all around the world, there's some great events.
The Youpreneur Summit over in London
that Chris Ducker puts on,
amazing event that I went to the first time it happened
and yeah so those kinds of things.
So planning out in your calendar again
amongst the content that you're creating,
amongst the launches and the promotions that you do,
where you're gonna be, that all plays a role
because then you're able to see okay,
well I'm gonna be you know traveling this week
so let's pull back the promotions during that week
so I'm not kind of doubling down
on my efforts during that time.
You can really focus on being present at that event
and meeting people and you know
perhaps you're speaking at some events as well,
obviously putting those things in the calendar
is really important.
So plan out for that, put them in the calendar,
and you'll have a better understanding
of how your next year is gonna go
even before the next year starts.
Alright so hold on.
In addition to all the things
that you're gonna be planning for your business,
it's really important to plan
when you're not gonna be doing business,
when especially when you're an entrepreneur,
it's really important to plan for that time off.
People like Michael Hyatt who I look up to
for a lot of how he lives his life,
how he works with his family,
and you know that's very inspiring to me,
one thing that he does is he takes a whole month off
where he and his wife go on a little sabbatical
and they kind of get offline and they do that thing,
you don't need to get to that extent
but it just is really admirable for somebody
with a very successful business like that
to see that he's still taking time out to be present
and to you know just kind of walk away
and remove himself from the craziness of business
which is really important.
We need to have time to breathe sometimes.
So basically what I'm saying
is you need to plan ahead of time,
or else it's never gonna happen
because we always overwork ourselves.
Plan time off and this is something
that's been in my business and in my life
the last few years as it's been really helpful.
Understanding which parts of the year
for instance August for me is typically a time of the year
where you know things are very slow
and I make sure that that's purposefully done
and strategically for me that's a good month
because it's gonna be after FlynnCon in July
but before the kids go back into school
so we're gonna be traveling during that time
and that's specifically time off
that I and my family can look forward to
but also it's gonna be a great spot
in the middle of the year where I can just take a breath
after something really important like FlynnCon
and before I get into a lot
of the end of the year promotion related things
that are gonna be happening.
So yeah, it's important to plan for time off,
maybe it's even just days of the month
where every once in a while
you just do something for yourself or you and your family
go on a little staycation or something,
planning that stuff is really important
and to see where it is and where it lies
amongst everything else that's happening
is really important too
because then you can begin to go okay well,
how is my head gonna be during this time?
Well I can't take a time off during this time
because this is in the middle of our big promotion here
so let's move that to the end of that
and have it be more of a reward or something like that.
But again, it's your life,
I want you to just understand
what's going on more than anything
and again, giving yourself time to breathe,
time off from the work that you do, really important.
Now there's many types of ways
that you can plan out your year and do all that stuff,
you can get a giant calendar
and you can get a wall calendar,
something that's really simple that we do
is we just use Post-it notes.
So as you can see over here on the board,
we have all the months of the year for next year,
you can see the black post notes are like blackout days.
These are days that we aren't supposed to schedule anything
and that kind of lives throughout the year
and there's gonna be more here,
we just haven't really filled this part of the year out yet.
But you can see the first part of the year
or the first couple quarters are very much planned out.
The sort of orange color
is when I'm traveling or doing speaking.
And then a lot of the sort of peach related colors
are kind of new things that are happening
that are launching as well.
And these pink ones are related to those mostly.
So I got a new book coming out, and then FlynnCon obviously,
these are in-person workshops,
the blue ones that we're doing.
So as you can see, we're just using Post-it notes
to keep it simple so we can get an understanding.
Even just doing this exercise alone,
if you were in here when we were creating this,
you would see that like wow
like July was super stacked with a bunch of stuff
but we needed to move things out of that
to make room for FlynnCon in our head space
and all that stuff.
But then you can see here August
like boom, all blacked out now
to sort of buffer what happens in July.
And then you know making sure there's workshops
where I'm meeting with people in person
who wanna come to San Diego
whether that's FlynnCon which is the big one
or some of these other auxiliary courses.
They're spread out so that everybody can have breathing room
and have a time of the year where they can come.
So yeah that's kind of how it works
and so you don't to make this complicated.
I think we always try to over-complicate things, don't we?
But let's keep it simple
and just see and plan out your year in that way.
Now I got three more things for you
that you can plan out
that you may or may not have thought about
so let's get into that.
So number five, I also think in addition
to giving yourself some time off during the year,
I think it's important to do some things personally
that can help you sort of live a more fulfilled life
outside of the business.
Meaning you should have something that you're working toward
on a more personal level,
a goal that you can have personally.
For me for example, a goal that I have next year
and I've, actually rewind a little bit,
a couple years prior I've had the goal
of jumping high enough to touch the rim
of a regulation height basketball hoop
and that was a really fun goal.
I did not reach that goal so to speak
but working out to achieve that goal
has allowed for as a byproduct
many other great things to happen physically for me
which is really cool.
So anyway, just having some personal goals
that you can work toward is really important.
If you haven't thought about what your big personal goal is,
even if it's just one for 2019 yet
or whatever in the next year is when you're watching this.
I think it's really important.
For me for the next year it is playing guitar.
And again, this is something personal that you can enjoy
that you just love and it can help you escape
and it's just something that can help you
just you know do something fun.
So for me, I wanna play guitar and I wanna play so well
that I can play Johnny B. Goode
which is the song that Marty McFly plays
at the Enchantment Under The Sea dance
in Back to the Future one and also two.
Anyway, so that that's my goal and that's, you know,
I have a guitar and I'm taking lessons
and that sort of thing,
I think it's really important for you to think about.
Okay well, what are you gonna do?
Like what's gonna fulfill your life?
What's gonna make you happy outside of the work
and the business that you do?
So thinking and planning for that can be really cool
and if you don't have a coach
or anybody to help you with that,
well there's YouTube, there's many other places
where you can go and learn a lot of these skills
to again, just do something for yourself personally.
Okay and then related to your goals,
here, give me this really quick.
So related to your goals, thanks Caleb,
can you wave hi?
Hey.
Caleb behind the scenes, awesome.
One thing that you could do
is start to think about what habits
you want to form too.
That can support you and the business that you wanna create
or perhaps this personal goal that you have.
So one habit that I wanna start creating for next year
is getting behind the camera like in this fashion,
going live on camera a little bit more
and doing more vlog style related things
and just getting more comfortable
and building that habit of being open
to just turning the camera on and starting to speak
and going a little bit behind the scenes more often
just like this.
So that's a habit that I'm gonna be starting to form,
I'm gonna be doing this weekly on a live show
that may or may not be called The Income Stream, right?
Get it, we'll see, I don't know.
But hey, we have to plan that out a little bit later but--
- I like the name. - I like the name too,
yeah it's pretty cool, The Income Stream with Pat Flynn.
But anyway, I'm gonna be forming that habit
and that's something that I'm planning for
and I think it's really important to do that
because a lot of times these habits that you create
can support the goals that you have
and the lifestyle that you want to live.
So what habits are you gonna start forming for yourself?
If just one.
Number seven, the final thing here to plan
which isn't really anything you have to plan
but it's more of a play on words.
I want you to plan and this is more a mindset thing,
I want you to plan to succeed,
I want you to plan to have fun,
I want you to plan to be happy.
This is approaching the next year with confidence,
that's really important
because if you don't think you can do these things
that you're planning for, then guess what?
Then you're very likely to not accomplish it.
I think it was Henry Ford who said,
"Whether you think you can or you can't, you're right."
So a lot of the success that you're gonna have next year
is gonna be related to your mindset.
So I want you to plan for success
and plan and approach it as if you will achieve those goals
because you will and you know what?
You're gonna aim high and even if you miss your mark,
you're gonna still you know reach your mark
which is a quote I saw on a calendar recently
that may or may not be great.
But basically what I'm saying is aim high,
plan for success and you're gonna give yourself
the best chance to succeed.
Now going back to the personal goal thing,
I wanna know in the comment section below
before we finish this video,
type in what your big personal goal is
for 2019 or even next year,
whatever the next year might be for you.
So not that we're living in different times
and you know we're in DeLoreans and stuff like that
but I mean like whatever year this is now,
the next year, what is your big goal?
what is your big personal goal?
For me was play Johnny B. Goode on guitar,
what is it for you?
Team Flynn, I wanna hear from you.
I wanna wish you all the best into the next year
and let you know that I'm here for you.
Team Flynn for the win.
